The High Tide Club

The High Tide Club by Mary Kay Andrews
Print and e-book, 480 pages
Published May 8th 2018 by St. Martin's Press

From the New York Times bestselling author of The Weekenders comes a delightful new novel about new love, old secrets, and the kind of friendship that transcends generations.

When ninety-nine-year-old heiress Josephine Bettendorf Warrick summons Brooke Trappnell to Talisa Island, her 20,000 acre remote barrier island home, Brooke is puzzled. Everybody in the South has heard about the eccentric millionaire mistress of Talisa, but Brooke has never met her. Josephine’s cryptic note says she wants to discuss an important legal matter with Brooke, who is an attorney, but Brooke knows that Mrs. Warrick has long been a client of a prestigious Atlanta law firm.

Over a few meetings, the ailing Josephine spins a tale of old friendships, secrets, betrayal and a long-unsolved murder. She tells Brooke she is hiring her for two reasons: to protect her island and legacy from those who would despoil her land, and secondly, to help her make amends with the heirs of the long dead women who were her closest friends, the girls of The High Tide Club—so named because of their youthful skinny dipping escapades—Millie, Ruth and Varina. When Josephine dies with her secrets intact, Brooke is charged with contacting Josephine’s friends’ descendants and bringing them together on Talisa for a reunion of women who’ve actually never met.

The High Tide Club is Mary Kay Andrews at her Queen of the Beach Reads best, a compelling and witty tale of romance thwarted, friendships renewed, justice delivered, and true love found.

My thoughts about The High Tide Club ~~

(I love to note the first lines of the books I'm reading. First lines can really grab a reader's attention and I love seeing where the author takes the reader after their first lines.)

First line—"The three young women stared down at the hole they'd just dug. Their gauzy pastel dresses were rumpled and slightly damp, and the heels of their dainty sandals made them teeter precariously on the rounded oyster shell mound."

Mary Kay Andrews is one of my must-read authors. I just love her stories. The High Tide Club was an amazing journey into another fabulous world that she has created.

Brooke gets a call from Josephine Bettendorf Warrick, a women who wants to make amends to some old friends before it's too late. As Brooke goes about tracking down the families of the original members of the High Tide Club, she discovers the secrets from long ago—secrets that even involve her own family.

This story was not the typical 'beach read" story that I was expecting. There is suspense, intrigue, old secrets, new deceptions, old friends, new friendships, twists I didn't see coming, characters I loved, some shady characters, and a few who surprised me by their actions.

As always, with one of Mary Kay's books, I was swept away to another place, a place filled with intriguing people, all of whom led interesting, intertwined lives, characters who will stay with me long after the book is closed.

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Congratulations Mary Kay,
on the release today of your wonderful book,
The High Tide Club

It's an opportunity to visit other blogs and to comment on their reads. And ... you can add to that ever growing TBR pile! So welcome everyone. Release Day! Every Single Secret by Emily Carpenter ~ My Thoughts

Happy Release Day!!

Every Single Secret

Every Single Secret by Emily Carpenter
Print and e-book, 313 pages
Published May 1st 2018 by Lake Union Publishing

Every Single Secret takes you on a journey into a dark, surreal world…A true psychological thriller that will leave you breathless.” —Wendy Walker, bestselling author of All Is Not Forgotten and Emma in the Night

Emotionally guarded Daphne Amos always believed she’d found a kindred spirit in her fiancé, Heath. Both very private people, they’ve kept their pasts hidden from the world, and each other, until Heath’s escalating nightmares begin to put an undeniable strain on their relationship. Determined to give their impending marriage the best chance of succeeding, Heath insists that Daphne join him on a seven-day retreat with Dr. Matthew Cerny, a psychologist celebrated for getting to the root of repressed memories. Daphne reluctantly agrees—even though the past is the last place she wants to go.

The retreat’s isolated and forbidding location increases her unease, as do the doctor’s rules: they must relinquish their keys and phones, they’ll be monitored at all hours by hidden cameras, and they’re never to socialize with the other guests.

One sleepless night, Daphne decides to leave her room…and only then does she realize that the institute is not at all what it seems—and that whatever’s crying out from Heath’s past isn’t meant to be heard. It’s meant to be silenced.

My thoughts about Every Single Secret ~~

(I love to note the first lines of the books I'm reading. First lines can really grab a reader's attention and I love seeing where the author takes the reader after their first lines.)

First line—"There are monsters all around us—people who have to hide because the world can't bear to see them for who they truly are. They're good at keeping secrets, the monsters. Sometimes too good."

When I started Every Single Secret, I knew it would be a story about secrets, maybe lots of secrets, but I was not at all prepared for the depth of the secrets. Wow! For Daphne and Heath, they come to find out that that things are not always what they seem at Baskens.

Daphne is a woman to be admired, a strong person who defies authority to get at the truth. We know right from the get-go that she is running from someone, trying to escape something, but as we get deeper and deeper into the story, there are so many questions. Why are they really there? Where are all the other people who are supposed to be there with them? Who's all in on whatever is going on? What is going on? What's real? What's for show?

So many questions! I sped through the book as I needed answers just as much as Daphne did—what an intense ride! And I loved every minute of it!

Congratulations Emily,
on the release today of your fabulous book,
Every Single Secret!

Loved it!
