Release Day! The Stockwell Letters by Jacqueline Friedland ~ #Giveaway! #TheStockwellLetters @jbfriedland @GoSparkPress @GoSparkPoint

Congrats Jacqueline
on the release today of
The Stockwell Letters!

The Stockwell Letters by Jacqueline Friedland
Historical Fiction, 328 pages
Published August 29, 2023 by SparkPress

From USA Today best-selling and multi-award-winning author Jacqueline Friedland comes a gripping work of fiction based on the true story of female abolitionist Ann Phillips and her connection to Anthony Burns, a young man who briefly escaped American slavery and rocked the nation with his astoundingly heroic story.

A passionate advocate of abolition from her earliest years, Ann’s activism was derailed just before her twenty-fourth birthday, when she fell sick with a mysterious illness. In order to protect her fragile health, her husband, the famous abolitionist Wendell Phillips, forbade her from joining any further anti-slavery outings. Even so, when fugitive slave Anthony Burns is apprehended in Boston, Ann is determined to help him, no matter what it costs her.

With a particular focus on the predicament of nineteenth-century women who wanted to effect change despite the restrictions society imposed on them, The Stockwell Letters takes a deep dive into the harrowing conditions of the antebellum South and the obstacles faced by abolitionists who fought tirelessly to eradicate slavery. A fast-paced, arresting recounting of America’s not-so-distant history—the story will stay with readers long after the final page.

Blackberry Winter
by Sarah Jio
Paperback ~ Published September 2012
I've loved all of this author's stories!
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

In 2011, Sarah Jio burst onto the fiction scene with two sensational novels--The Violets of March and The Bungalow. With Blackberry Winter--taking its title from a late-season, cold-weather phenomenon--Jio continues her rich exploration of the ways personal connections can transcend the boundaries of time.

Seattle, 1933. Single mother Vera Ray kisses her three-year-old son, Daniel, goodnight and departs to work the night-shift at a local hotel. She emerges to discover that a May-Day snow has blanketed the city, and that her son has vanished. Outside, she finds his beloved teddy bear lying face-down on an icy street, the snow covering up any trace of his tracks, or the perpetrator's.

Seattle, 2010. Seattle Herald reporter Claire Aldridge, assigned to cover the May 1 "blackberry winter" storm and its twin, learns of the unsolved abduction and vows to unearth the truth. In the process, she finds that she and Vera may be linked in unexpected ways.

Stairway to the Sea by Joanne DeMaio ~ My Thoughts #StairwayToTheSea @JoanneDeMaio

Congrats Joanne
on the recent release of
Stairway to the Sea!

Stairway to the Sea by Joanne DeMaio
Women's Saga, 276/pages
Published August 1, 2023 by Joanne DeMaio

From New York Times bestselling author Joanne DeMaio comes Stairway to the Sea, Book 19 of The Seaside Saga.

Dune grasses sway atop the Barlows' craggy bluff. Hidden past a narrow path there is a rickety stairway going down, down, down to the sea. Even in its neglect, the stairway is beautiful, with its sweeping views of Long Island Sound. Depending on the tides, those stairs lead to a tiny secluded beach. But for years, the stairs have been nearly forgotten. Until now.

Until this stairway descending a steep sandy embankment becomes a life ring for the one man who needs it most. A sudden offer to fix up the stairs brings a sea change, both to the stairway itself and to the people who gather on it. Conversations. Revelations. Secrets. Desires. All are intimately told in this sacred spot where sea and sky meet.

My thoughts about Stairway to the Sea ~~

(I love to note the first lines of the books I'm reading. First lines can really grab a reader's attention and I love seeing where the author takes the reader after their first line.)

First line—"Shane's never done this before. Never stopped the captainmidsentence. Never told the captain to listen to him."

Once again, I totally loved my time in Stony Point, hanging with the whole gang. As they each try to move forward in their lives, some of them find themselves having to step back a bit. Not all is right in everyone's world at the same time. That's one of the things I love about this series—there are the good times for some.... and then drama for others.

When Shane's life is upended, he comes back to Stony Point to hopefully heal. Will the steps he's rebuilding lead him to rebuilding his own life? Only time will tell.

Stairway to the Sea was a wonderful escape read for me, I always love my little visits to this caring community. And Joanne always ends the book with a little bit of a cliffhanger that makes me excited for the next book.

I highly recommend this series, I've loved every single one of the stories and getting to know all of the characters of this amazing community. If you have not picked up these books yet, you really should. You will come to love this community and these people as much as I do.

The Liars, book #20, is scheduled to be released on
March 3, 2024!

I received a copy of Stairway to the Sea from the author and this is my honest opinion.

If new to The Seaside Saga, the reading order is below. Written like an ongoing TV show, it's a revolutionary series following the same tangled group of beach friends from book-to-book.

About the author

Joanne DeMaio is a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of contemporary fiction. She enjoys writing about friendship, family, love and choices, while setting her stories in New England towns or by the sea.

Joanne’s books include the New York Times Bestseller Blue Jeans and Coffee Beans, the first in her ongoing and groundbreaking Seaside Saga. These eleven (and counting) novels journey with a group of beach friends, much the way a TV series does, continuing with the same cast of characters and their storylines from book-to-book.

Joanne’s winter novels have also received much acclaim. These heartwarming standalones are set in the same snowy New England town. Snowflakes and Coffee Cakes became a USA Today Bestseller, and has been featured in national magazines and Six Flags theme parks.

In addition, Joanne’s debut novel, Whole Latte Life, won first place in a competition at BookExpo America and was named a Kirkus Reviews Critics’ Pick. Her other novels have appeared in Redbook, First for Women magazine, Southern Living, USA Today and more. ~ Author's website

The Belonger by Mary Kathleen Mehuron ~ My Thoughts and an Excerpt #TheBelonger @MKMehuron25 @GoSparkPress

The Belonger by Mary Kathleen Mehuron
Marriage & Divorce Fiction, 272 pages
June 13, 2023 by SparkPress

Caribbean-island innkeeper Holly Walker is hunkering down against a monster hurricane. Unfortunately, so is player Lord Anthony Bascombe, a man who excuses his bad behavior by saying he is descended from pirates.

Then her grown son, Byron, and his father, Montez—the man she’s never stopped wanting—go missing. Will she ever see them again? What about the many others hurt and dying? And will help ever arrive? With each passing day, Holly’s tumultuous past and the epic storm send her hurtling toward a shattering climax that will change the island—and Holly’s life—forever.

My thoughts about The Belonger ~~

(I love to note the first lines of the books I'm reading. First lines can really grab a reader's attention and I love seeing where the author takes the reader after their first lines.)

First lines—"Holly put both her hands flat on the deep sill of the hinged window of her bedroom and leaned out to see the morning light. Then she pulled on shorts and a T-shirt over her head."

What's not to love about a story set in the Caribbean islands? It's like taking a vacation without leaving the comfort of  your favorite reading chair.  Lots of beautiful scenery and appetizing food, with a little romance thrown in.

But then the author throws in a hurricane, and a lost love from the past, and the story becomes anything but a vacation. Holly worries about her son, and their inn, when the hurricane threatens. Along with the physical turmoil she's going through, she also finds herself emotionally torn, wanting her past love but also curious about her future possibilities.

I loved The Belonger, not only for the amazing setting but also for the memorable characters. I struggled and fretted right along with them as their world seemed to collapse. This is a story that will stay with me because of the interesting storyline but also because of the beautiful location that the author took me to.

I received an ARC of The Belonger from the publisher and this is my honest opinion.

Excerpt

Sameera practically threw herself into Anthony’s arms and he tossed an amused smile over his shoulder to his friend. Like a character from an old Hollywood movie, he bent her backward for a kiss. Although he pulled off a dramatic vignette, which he seemed to thoroughly enjoy, he only planted a loud smooch on her forehead instead of her lips.

“You gorgeous girl. What are you cooking up for us tonight? I’m famished. When we are ready perhaps you can give us one of everything. You decide— a chef’s tasting.” With that, he pulled her back up and gave her a playful push toward the kitchen. “But wait till later in the evening. Cocktails first. Priorities, you know. Then we are off on a walkabout.”

Sameera seemed a bit baffled and, certainly, furious as she slunk back through the kitchen door.

Anthony’s attention now turned toward the bar as he exclaimed, “Fabienne, my lovely! You are a shining example of the beauty of the women of Haiti. What shall I drink tonight my darling?” She cast her eyes down, presumably embarrassed by the intimacy in his statement, though Holly couldn’t help noticing Fabienne was smiling. It was a shy one, but a smile, nonetheless.

About the author

Mary Kathleen Mehuron is a career educator who made a splash with her first book, Fading Past, an autobiographical novel whose protagonist, like Mary Kathleen, grew up Irish-Catholic in New Jersey. The Opposite of Never was Mary Kathleen’s second book, and to finish it, she traveled alone to Havana in January of 2015 during President Obama's opening of Cuba. Her goal was to experience the city before it became Americanized and write the ending of her book. Though the integration of Americans never really happened, the launch of The Opposite of Never was the catalyst that made her a full time writer.

The Belonger is her third novel, its basis was the loss of her family home to a Category Five hurricane and two of her three sons being caught in a Category Four storm on Grand Turk Island. As the island had no communication with the outside world, she didn’t know if her children or friends were alive or dead. The stories told afterward inspired The Belonger.

Her fourth novel, S. Beach Drag, revisits the New Jersey of her youth. Set in 1972, her Irish Catholic protagonist, Maeve O’Conner dives into the decayed pandemonium of carnival life on the boardwalk of Asbury Park, New Jersey. Grifters, side show entertainers and characters of every ilk abide there. Many, like Bruce Springsteen, are undiscovered artists. Looking for these arresting subjects, Maeve is desperate to win a photography contest that will get her a scholarship to art school in Manhattan.

Mary Kathleen lives and teaches in a ski town in Vermont where she and her husband raised three sons, she is a weekly columnist in her local newspaper, The Valley Reporter. Her Take Me Back articles have become a non-profit 510(c)(3) that raise money for organizations that want to showcase local history. The first fundraising product was her non-fiction book Take Me Back: An Anecdotal History of the Mad River Valley. She also takes extended time to work on her novels on Grand Turk Island, in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom and Savannah, Georgia.

Release Day! Nobody Told Me by Kay Bratt ~ My Thoughts #NobodyToldMe @kaybratt

Congrats Kay
on the release today of
Nobody Told Me!

Nobody Told Me by Kay Bratt
Women Sleuths, Suspense, 266 pages
Published August 21, 2023 by Red Thread Publishing Group

In Nobody Told Me, the sixth book in the Hart's Ridge small-town mystery series by Kay Bratt, Deputy Taylor Gray is called upon to investigate the sudden disappearance of a beloved young man. With time running out, she races against the clock to uncover the truth and bring him home safely.

Meanwhile, Lucy Gray is determined to start anew, build a stable life for her son, and prove that she's not defined by her past. But as she sets out on a path of self-discovery, she realizes that the journey isn't as straightforward as she thought it would be.

As the mystery unfolds, readers will be drawn into the tight-knit community of Hart's Ridge, where even the most seemingly perfect towns have their secrets. With Bratt's signature style of masterful storytelling, Nobody Told Me is a gripping tale of suspense and intrigue that will keep readers on the edge of their seats until the very end.

If you're a fan of small-town mysteries with well-drawn characters and an engrossing plot, then you won't want to miss Nobody Told Me, the latest installment in the Hart's Ridge series.

Nobody Told Me is book six of the new Hart's Ridge small-town mystery series, written by Kay Bratt, million-copy best-selling author of Wish Me Home and True to Me.

My thoughts about Nobody Told Me ~~

(I love to note the first lines of the books I'm reading. First lines can really grab a reader's attention and I love seeing where the author takes the reader after their first line.)

First lines—"Lucy kept her eyes on the kayak in front of her, her attention barely wavering as her sisteralong with her beloved dog, Diesel, perched on the frontguided them through the creek with a confidence that spoke of practice."

Nobody Told Me is another exciting installment of the Hart's Ridge series. Not only is there a case for Deputy Taylor to solve—this one hitting close to home for her—but then Lucy has her own drama to deal with. It someone stalking her.... or is her imagination just playing tricks on her?

In my opinion, book six has a more intense feel to it than the previous stories. There is definitely something sinister going on and I was on the edge of my seat several times, hoping that every one was going to be okay. And then there was the unexpected twist to wrap it all up.

I love this series and am always anxiously waiting for the next installment. And then I devour it! These are stories you don't want to miss. I know you'll look forward to them, just like I do. I highly recommend the whole series. Hello, Goodbye, book #7, is coming out on November 16th!

I received an ARC of Nobody Told Me from the author and this is my honest opinion.
