It's an opportunity to visit other blogs and to comment on their reads. And ... you can add to that ever growing TBR pile! So welcome everyone. We had a wonderful Thanksgiving at our daughter and SIL's house. There were 11 of us there, not the whole family, but it was great to spend time with the ones who were there. Of course, there was tons of food and I ate way too much. I did bring some leftovers home so we got to enjoy a few more meals.

The weather has been beautiful and I'm trying to get back to walking everyday. I have really been slacking off lately and I can feel it. Wish there was some magic potion to motivate me.

Thanks for stopping by. I hope you all have a good week.
Happy reading!

The Perfect Son
Lauren North

A disturbing and shocking debut novel of psychological suspense about a recently widowed mother, her young son, and the lengths she'll go to in order to keep him safe.

After her husband, Mark, died suddenly in a terrible accident a few months earlier, the only thing keeping Tess together is Jamie. As they struggle to make sense of their new life without Mark, they find joy in brief moments of normalcy like walking to school and watching television together. Life is hard without Mark, but Tess has Jamie, and that's what matters.

But there in the hospital, confused and surrounded by people who won't listen, Tess’s world falls apart. To save her son, she must piece together what happened between Mark's death and Jamie's birthday, but the truth might just be too much for her to bear.

Release Day! Finding the Invisible Woman by Heidi Renee Mason ~ My Thoughts #FindingTheInvisibleWoman

Happy Release Day!

Congrats Heidi
on the release of
Finding the Invisible Woman!

Finding the Invisible Woman by Heidi Renee Mason
Contemporary Women Fiction, 256 pages
Published November 23, 2021 by Hot Tree Publishing

What do you do when no one sees you? How do you find yourself when you’ve become invisible?

Forty-three-year-old Hadley Monroe has outgrown her life. Nothing in her world seems to fit anymore. A loving wife and doting mother of two grown daughters, Hadley has always put the needs of her family first, quietly tucking away her own dreams of being an artist. Although she doesn’t regret her choices, Hadley has entered the phase of life where she feels lost.

Her children are grown, and her role as a mother has changed. Hadley’s husband, Charlie, an attorney and ten years her senior, doesn’t seem to need her anymore either. Hadley loves Charlie with all her heart, but lately, he's been distant, and Hadley believes he's keeping a secret. Unable to connect with him, she is isolated and alone.

A chance encounter with a stranger sets in motion a series of events that will upend her life and challenge everything she ever believed. When Hadley receives the call that her abusive, estranged mother is dying, she feels the walls closing in even more. Her solid, perfect life is unrecognizable. Can she find her way back to the woman she used to be? Does that woman even exist?

How can she find herself when she has become invisible?

My thoughts about Finding the Invisible Woman ~~

(I love to note the first lines of the books I'm reading. First lines can really grab a reader's attention and I love seeing where the author takes the reader after their first lines.)

First lines—"Had I known that day in the coffee shop that the conversation I was about to have would forever alter the course of my life, would I have stopped myself?

I think this book has one of the best first lines I've ever read. How does anyone know how one particular incident in their life will affect the rest of their life? If things had transpired differently, what would Hadley's life look like now?

So needless to say, this book grabbed from that very first line. Once again, Heidi's writing threw me into an amazing story that I couldn't help but devour. The story is filled with great characters and a very interesting storyline. I totally came away from it thinking about what a small world it is, fate, being in the right place at the right time, and that everything happens for a reason.

I have read several of Heidi's stories now and I'm constantly blown away by her versatilely in writing. Her stories are all so different from the next one and I never know what I'm going to get when I start reading but I have loved everything I've read so far. I highly recommend Finding the Invisible Woman. It was another fabulous read!

I received Finding the Invisible Woman from the author and this is my honest opinion of the book.

Release Day! A Royal Farce by Laura Heffernan ~ My Thoughts #ARoyalFarce

 Happy Release Day!

Congrats Laura
on the release of
A Royal Farce!

A Royal Farce by Laura Heffernan
Romance, 292 pages
Published November 22, 2021 by Empress Books

Lila needs to pay her soul-crushing debt. Pierre needs a wife. Maybe they can help each other.

Once she finishes these renovations, Lila can finally sell her money pit and get back on her feet. But on box store wages, that’ll take decades. Then her friend Pierre proposes the perfect solution: he needs a green card. If Lila marries him, he'll pay for the job.

One problem: who is going to believe the gorgeous, brilliant investment banker fell for little Lila? Everyone, if they have any say. Not even their closest friends can suspect the truth. Lila fakes the walk of shame, feigns shock at Pierre's staged public proposal, and plans their wedding with a single-minded determination rivaled only by her Yorkie begging for treats.

Their fake relationship is so perfect, Lila starts to wish it was real. Then Pierre's brother drops a bombshell: they are royalty, princes to a tiny island nation, and Lila isn't princess material. Now, instead of studs and sandpaper, Lila finds herself worrying about titles and tiaras. Will she get her happily ever after, or will Lila's prince decide she's not so charming after all?

My thoughts about A Royal Farce ~~

(I love to note the first lines of the books I'm reading. First lines can really grab a reader's attention and I love seeing where the author takes the reader after their first lines.)

First lines—"Rule #1: This arrangement is top secret and may not be shared with anyone. They say working with you hands nourishes the soul. 'They' clearly never found themselves rehabbing an upstairs apartment with no air conditioning in the middle of June."

This story was so much more than I was expecting. Sure, a sweet little rom-com, a story going down the path that you expect all rom-coms to go. But there was so much more here. It was funny and sweet with amazing characters that you just wanted to root for. And then there was a bit of drama thrown in for good measure.

The writing is wonderful and I was totally entranced by the words on the page. I flew through this book. I loved the relationship between Lila and Pierre. Who wouldn't want one of their best friends to become their prince charming, in every way?

I thoroughly enjoyed A Royal Farce and recommend it for a fun, entertaining time. And.... book #2, A Royal Pain, is coming out next summer. I can't wait to read more about this great couple's lives.

I received A Royal Farce from the author and this is my honest opinion of the book.

Book #2
Expected publication August 22, 2022

This OR That #Giveaway Week 38 ~ Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens OR The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane by Lisa See #WhereTheCrawdadsSing #TheTeaGirlOfHummingbirdLane

I have sooooo many books!

The This or That Giveaway! feature that I post every Saturday is a way for me to clear my shelves and to share some of the many books I have. It's a way for me to cull my collection and give someone else the chance to enjoy these treasures.

Good luck and be sure to stop back next week!

*****************

Where the Crawdads Sing
Delia Owens
Hardcover ~ August 2018

For years, rumors of the “Marsh Girl” haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet fishing village. Kya Clark is barefoot and wild; unfit for polite society. So in late 1969, when the popular Chase Andrews is found dead, locals immediately suspect her.

But Kya is not what they say. A born naturalist with just one day of school, she takes life's lessons from the land, learning the real ways of the world from the dishonest signals of fireflies. But while she has the skills to live in solitude forever, the time comes when she yearns to be touched and loved. Drawn to two young men from town, who are each intrigued by her wild beauty, Kya opens herself to a new and startling world–until the unthinkable happens.

In Where the Crawdads Sing, Owens juxtaposes an exquisite ode to the natural world against a profound coming of age story and haunting mystery. Thought-provoking, wise, and deeply moving, Owens’s debut novel reminds us that we are forever shaped by the child within us, while also subject to the beautiful and violent secrets that nature keeps.

The story asks how isolation influences the behavior of a young woman, who like all of us, has the genetic propensity to belong to a group. The clues to the mystery are brushed into the lush habitat and natural histories of its wild creatures.

The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane
Lisa See
Hardcover ~ March 2017

In their remote mountain village, Li-yan and her family align their lives around the seasons and the farming of tea. For the Akha people, ensconced in ritual and routine, life goes on as it has for generations—until a stranger appears at the village gate in a jeep, the first automobile any of the villagers has ever seen.

Slowly, Li-yan, one of the few educated girls on her mountain, begins to reject the customs that shaped her early life. When she has a baby out of wedlock she rejects the tradition that would compel her to give the child over to be killed, and instead leaves her, wrapped in a blanket with a tea cake tucked in its folds, near an orphanage in a nearby city.

As Li-yan comes into herself, leaving her village for an education, a business, and city life, her daughter, Haley, is raised in California by loving adoptive parents. Despite her privileged childhood, Haley wonders about her origins. Across the ocean Li-yan longs for her lost daughter. Over the course of years, each searches for meaning in the study of Pu’er, the tea that has shaped their family’s destiny for centuries.

EXCERPT:

Amanda
It’s Monday.
Our home looks like the set for Extreme Home Makeover, except there’s no bus to move and all of the workmen act like I’m invisible as I wander downstairs after waking up naked in an empty bed.
I throw on clothes and am down the stairs when I spot my husband.
“What is going on?” I ask Andrew, who is huddled over blueprints with some guy who looks like he runs a union hall in South Boston. Tight eyes, distrustful look, goatee, and an intensity that makes it clear you want him on your side.
Andrew breaks away, kisses my cheek, and gives me a saucy half grin. “Just like you wanted. Here we go.”
“Here we go what? We barely talked about what we wanted!”
“We did,” he says, suddenly defensive. “In bed,” he whispers.
“What I want in bed has nothing to do with tile colors and three-season sunrooms!” I say.
Loudly.
“The guys aren’t working on anything like that,” he hisses as a few workmen suppress smiles. “We’re putting in new backup systems.”
“Backups for what?”
“Power outages. Acts of God. Hurricanes. Bomb cyclones that leave six feet of snow.”
I snort. “What, no alien contingency plan? Got a blueprint for a universal extraterrestrial language translator in there?”
Andrew reddens and avoids eye contact.
I frown. “Andrew?” I grab his arm and pull him aside, his muscles tense. “What are you doing? This isn’t how I envisioned remodeling and spending our honeymoon. For one, we didn’t have sex that second time this morning.”
He looks at the clock. “It’s only 7:53. Plenty of time for that.” He grabs me at the waist and pulls me close, trying to divert me with a kiss.
It works.
“We’ve got the geothermal heat unit figured out, and when we redo the gutter system and the roof, in addition to the solar panels, we’ve got an evaporation system set up for clean water collection. Storage is next,” he says to me.
“All that in the first hour of work?” I’m stunned.
“I’m efficient. Two weeks of my focused attention is like five years of a normal human being’s time.”
“Efficient and humble. I love that in a man.”
“You’d better, because you’re stuck with me forever.”
“Is that a threat or a promise?”
I get a pat on the ass in response.

Release Day! A Man of Honor by Barbara Taylor Bradford ~ My Thoughts #AManOfHonor

Happy Release Day!

Congrats Barbara
on the release of
A Man of Honor!

A Man of Honor by Barbara Taylor Bradford
Historical Fiction, 464 pages
Published November 16, 2021 by St. Martin's Press

The prequel to Barbara Taylor Bradford's New York Times bestselling and dazzling saga A Woman of Substance.

Opening five years before the start of A Woman of Substance, A Man of Honor begins with 13-year-old Blackie O’Neill facing an uncertain future in rural County Kerry. Orphaned and alone, he has just buried his sister, Bronagh, and must leave his home to set sail for England, in search of a better life with his mother’s brother in Leeds. There, he learns his trade as a navvy, amid the grand buildings and engineering triumphs of one of England’s most prosperous cities, and starts to dream of greater things... And then, high on the Yorkshire moors, in the mists of a winter morning he meets a kitchen maid called Emma Harte.

In A Man of Honor, the true Blackie O'Neill is revealed. For the first time, readers discover his story: his tumultuous life, the obstacles facing him, the desire he has to throw off the impotence of poverty and move up in the world. Like his friend Emma, he is ambitious, driven, disciplined, and determined to make it to the top. And like Emma Harte, he is an unforgettable character for the millions who loved the book.

My thoughts about A Man of Honor ~~

(I love to note the first lines of the books I'm reading. First lines can really grab a reader's attention and I love seeing where the author takes the reader after their first lines.)

First lines—"It was very windy on the top of the cliffs. He hadn't expected that, to be sure. And it was a strong wind that buffeted him forward."

I read A Woman of Substance when it came out in 1979 and absolutely loved it! It has always been one of my favorite books. And I've read every sequel that has been published since then., becoming totally entrenched in the Emma Harte world. So I was super excited to read Blackie's backstory. I even got my hands on a copy of A Woman of Substance so I can do a re-read.

While I loved the Blackie character and loved learning more about him before he met Emma, I was somewhat disappointed in A Man of Honor. I felt that the author was very repetitive about some things within the story and included storylines and characters that weren't really necessary to the overall theme of getting Blackie's backstory. It's almost like she needed to add more words to make a page number goal. This would have been so much more enjoyable without all the extra stuff.

That being said, I enjoyed this little dip back into Blackie's and Emma's world and it reinforced my desire to go back and read A Woman of Substance again. I would love for another group of readers to discover that wonderful story.

I received A Man of Honor from NetGalley. and this is my honest opinion of the book.
