Everyone knows Alice slept with two guys at one party.

But did you know Alice was sexting Brandon when he crashed his car?

It's true. Ask ANYBODY.

Rumor has it that Alice Franklin is a slut. It's written all over the bathroom stall at Healy High for everyone to see. And after star quarterback Brandon Fitzsimmons dies in a car accident, the rumors start to spiral out of control.

In this remarkable debut novel, four Healy High students—the girl who has the infamous party, the car accident survivor, the former best friend, and the boy next door—tell all they know.

But exactly what is the truth about Alice? In the end there's only one person to ask: Alice herself.

My thoughts about The Truth About Alice ~~

(I love to note the first lines of the books I'm reading. First lines can really grab a reader's attention and I love seeing where the author takes the reader after their first line.)

First line—"I, Elaine O'Dea, am going to tell you two definite, absolute, indisputable truths."

High school is a tough time for teens. The cliques, the rumors, the bullies. Alice has to deal with all of this.

Rumors about Alice start after a party and everyone thinks she is responsible for a fellow student's death. And more. Can Alice survive the rumor mill and the bullying, waiting for the truth to come out?

This is a very realistic look at what our young people are having to go through as they transition to adulthood. I'm not sure why society, and other teens, make it so hard for others but this book is definitely an eye-opener about this time in their lives. Hopefully it will make people stop and think about how they treat others.

I really enjoyed The Truth About Alice, even as I watched Alice struggle. This is the first book by Jennifer Mathieu that I have read but I'm going to check out her other books now.

I received The Truth About Alice from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.

Release Day! The Lost Girls of Paris by Pam Jenoff #TheLostGirlsOfParis

39816076

Congratulations Pam
on the release today of
The Lost Girls of Paris!

The Lost Girls of Paris by Pam Jenoff
Paperback, 384 pages
Published January 29th 2019 by Park Row

From the author of the runaway bestseller The Orphan’s Tale comes a remarkable story of friendship and courage centered around three women and a ring of female spies during World War II.

1946, Manhattan

Grace Healey is rebuilding her life after losing her husband during the war. One morning while passing through Grand Central Terminal on her way to work, she finds an abandoned suitcase tucked beneath a bench. Unable to resist her own curiosity, Grace opens the suitcase, where she discovers a dozen photographs—each of a different woman. In a moment of impulse, Grace takes the photographs and quickly leaves the station.

Grace soon learns that the suitcase belonged to a woman named Eleanor Trigg, leader of a ring of female secret agents who were deployed out of London during the war. Twelve of these women were sent to Occupied Europe as couriers and radio operators to aid the resistance, but they never returned home, their fates a mystery. Setting out to learn the truth behind the women in the photographs, Grace finds herself drawn to a young mother turned agent named Marie, whose daring mission overseas reveals a remarkable story of friendship, valor and betrayal.

Vividly rendered and inspired by true events, New York Times bestselling author Pam Jenoff shines a light on the incredible heroics of the brave women of the war, and weaves a mesmerizing tale of courage, sisterhood and the great strength of women to survive in the hardest of circumstances.

My thoughts about The Lost Girls of Paris ~~
(originally posted on November 29. 2018)

~ I love to note the first lines of the books I'm reading. First lines can really grab a reader's attention and I love seeing where the author takes the reader after their first line.

First line—"New York, 1946 If not for the second worst mistake of Grace Healey's life, she never would have found the suitcase."

My recently discovered, new favorite genre is historical fiction and The Lost Girls of Paris just reinforced why I love it so much. This is a story that captured me from the very first sentence—a story that totally drew me in as I was curious to learn more about Grace and the women in the pictures.

Grace is obsessed with finding out what happened to the women and I loved her determination to find some answers and get to the truth. I had to keep reminding myself that this book was set in the 1940's, not in the present, when women weren't perceived to be as strong-willed as Grace was.

Jenoff is a wonderful storyteller who can weave an interesting piece of the past into an informative and entertaining tale. I loved reading about the brave and strong women who sacrificed their lives for something they believed in. I enjoyed this story immensely and look forward to exploring more of this author's work.

I received a copy of The Lost Girls of Paris from BookishFirst in exchange for my honest review.

It's Monday! What Are You Reading? January 28, 2019

It's Monday! What Are You Reading? is a place to meet up and share what you have been, are and about to be reading over the week. It's an opportunity to visit other blogs and to comment on their reads. And ... you can add to that ever growing TBR pile! So welcome everyone. This meme started with J Kaye's Blog and then was taken up by Sheila from Book Journey. Sheila then passed it on to Kathryn at the Book Date. And here we are!

**************************************

Brrrrr! Baby, It's Cold Outside! Our temps have taken a polar plunge with the low predicted to be -33 on Tuesday night. I hope my poor car will start. Oh, wait! If it doesn't, maybe I'll have to stay home all day..... and read. Yes! What's the weather like where you're at?

I was supposed to travel to southern Nebraska for my brother's retirement party but after looking at the forecast for the weekend we decided not to go. I was sorry to miss it but was so glad we stayed home. It snowed all day Sunday with heavy winds. It would have been tough to get back. I told him we could celebrate his retirement this summer instead. 😉

Thanks for stopping by. I hope you all have a good week. Happy reading!

Close Your Eyes, Hold Hands by Chris Bohjalian ~ My Thoughts

18666006

Close Your Eyes, Hold Hands

Close Your Eyes, Hold Hands by Chris Bohjalian
Hardcover, 288 pages
Published July 8th 2014 by Doubleday

A heartbreaking, wildly inventive, and moving novel narrated by a teenage runaway, from the best-selling author of Midwives and The Sandcastle Girls.

Close Your Eyes, Hold Hands is the story of Emily Shepard, a homeless teen living in an igloo made of ice and trash bags filled with frozen leaves. Half a year earlier, a nuclear plant in Vermont's Northeast Kingdom had experienced a cataclysmic meltdown, and both of Emily's parents were killed. Devastatingly, her father was in charge of the plant, and the meltdown may have been his fault. Was he drunk when it happened?

Thousands of people are forced to flee their homes in the Kingdom; rivers and forests are destroyed; and Emily feels certain that, as the daughter of the most hated man in America, she is in danger. So instead of following the social workers and her classmates after the meltdown, Emily takes off on her own for Burlington, where she survives by stealing, sleeping on the floor of a drug dealer's apartment, and inventing a new identity for herself - an identity inspired by her favorite poet, Emily Dickinson.

When Emily befriends a young homeless boy named Cameron, she protects him with a ferocity she didn't know she had. But she still can't outrun her past, can't escape her grief, can't hide forever - and so she comes up with the only plan that she can.

A story of loss, adventure, and the search for friendship in the wake of catastrophe, Close Your Eyes, Hold Hands is one of Chris Bohjalian's finest novels to date - breathtaking, wise, and utterly transporting.

My thoughts about Close Your Eyes, Hold Hands ~~

(I love to note the first lines of the books I'm reading. First lines can really grab a reader's attention and I love seeing where the author takes the reader after their first lines.)

First line—"I built an igloo against the cold out of black plastic trash bags filled with wet leaves. It wasn't perfect."

Chris Bohjalian's books are always thought provoking and so well written. Close You Eyes, Hold Hands takes the reader into a world where a nuclear plant experiences a meltdown. We are dropped into the life of a young teen who is left a homeless orphan. This is her story of survival.

I was not expecting the story that unfolded when I started this book but I enjoyed it immensely. The pages flew for me as I worried about Emily and how she was going to handle her life and the people, sometimes not good people, she encountered.

Close You Eyes, Hold Hands is another great read from a master storyteller. I'm just sorry that it took me so long to read it. I will definitely be reading more of his books.

I received Close Your Eyes, Hold Hands from Goodreads in exchange for my honest opinion.

Twerp by Mark Goldblatt ~ My Thoughts #Twerp #NetGalley

Twerp

Twerp by Mark Goldblatt
Series: (Twerp #1)
Print and e-book, 290 pages
Grade Level: 4 - 7
Published May 28th 2013 by Random House Books for Young Readers

It's not like I meant for Danley to get hurt. . . .

Julian Twerski isn't a bully. He's just made a big mistake. So when he returns to school after a weeklong suspension, his English teacher offers him a deal: if he keeps a journal and writes about the incident that got him and his friends suspended, he can get out of writing a report on Shakespeare. Julian jumps at the chance. And so begins his account of life in sixth grade--blowing up homemade fireworks, writing a love letter for his best friend (with disastrous results), and worrying whether he's still the fastest kid in school. Lurking in the background, though, is the one story he can't bring himself to tell, the one story his teacher most wants to hear.

Inspired by Mark Goldblatt's own childhood growing up in 1960s Queens, Twerp shines with powerful writing that will have readers laughing and crying right along with these flawed but unforgettable characters.

My thoughts about Twerp ~~

(I love to note the first lines of the books I'm reading. First lines can really grab a reader's attention and I love seeing where the author takes the reader after their first lines.)

First line—"My English teacher, Mr. Selkirk, says I have to write something, and it has to be long, on account of the the thing that happened over winter recess—which in my opinion, doesn't amount to much."

Julian is a very likable 6th grader, who is assigned by his teacher to write in a journal about an incident that happened over break. As we read the journal, we find out so much about Julian, his life, and what it is like to be a 12 year old boya boy who is just trying to figure out how to live in his world.

Twerp was a very enjoyable read for me, even though it's not the typical kind of story I usually read. Sometimes it's refreshing to step outside the box and discover new authors and new worlds.

I received Twerp from NetGalley in exchange for my honest opinion.

Release Day! Wildflower Heart by Grace Greene ~ My Thoughts #WildflowerHeart #NetGalley

Happy Release Day!!

40817030

Congratulations Grace
on the release today of
Wildflower Heart!

Wildflower Heart by Grace Greene
Series: The Wildflower House Book 1
Paperback and e-book, 276 pages
Published January 22nd 2019 by Lake Union Publishing

From the bestselling author of The Memory of Butterflies comes the first in a bittersweet series about love and loss.

Kara Hart was scarred by loss—first the loss of her mother and now her husband. She feels broken, with no will to move forward, until her father does the unexpected: he moves to the Virginia countryside to restore an old Victorian mansion. Kara decides to go with him, telling herself that it will only be temporary.

The huge house is neglected and derelict, but Kara discovers its breathtaking field of wildflowers and is stunned by their beauty. The house, the grounds, and the quirky neighbors—including a handsome one—are almost as fascinating as her father’s sudden willingness to discuss her mother and his own secret past.

Kara is finding her new normal when tragedy strikes again, forcing her to make difficult choices. Will she go back to her old life and risk losing all she has gained? Or will she face her fears and give herself the opportunity to grow?

My thoughts about Wildflower Heart ~~

(I love to note the first lines of the books I'm reading. First lines can really grab a reader's attention and I love seeing where the author takes the reader after their first lines.)

First line—"Wildflowers are tough, They root in unlikely, often hostile environments, yet they manage to grow and bloom."

Wildflower Hearts is a beautiful story about getting through the tough times and moving on. That's easier said than done for Kara. She has had a lifetime of people she has loved, just up and leaving her. She moves with her father when he buys a new home but she still hasn't moved on with her life. Will the change in scenery help her change her life?

Grace has penned a heart-warming, lovely story which includes plenty of soul searching and reflection about what is important in life. I loved the gentleness of the words and the wonderful, caring characters. I'm so excited that this is going to be a series because I came to think of Kara and the rest of the people in the story as good friends and I can't wait to visit them again.

I received Wildflower Heart from the author via NetGalley in exchange for my honest opinion.

The Widow (book #1) and The Child (book #2)
Read my thoughts about The Child here.

About the author

Fiona Barton

My career has taken some surprising twists and turns over the years. I have been a journalist - senior writer at the Daily Mail, news editor at the Daily Telegraph, and chief reporter at The Mail on Sunday, where I won Reporter of the Year at the National Press Awards, gave up my job to volunteer in Sri Lanka and since 2008, have trained and worked with exiled and threatened journalists all over the world.

But through it all, a story was cooking in my head.

The worm of this book infected me long ago when, as a national newspaper journalist covering notorious crimes and trials, I found myself wondering what the wives of those accused really knew – or allowed themselves to know.

It took the liberation of my career change to turn that fascination into a tale of a missing child, narrated by the wife of the man suspected of the crime, the detective leading the hunt, the journalist covering the case and the mother of the victim.

Much to my astonishment and delight, The Widow is available now in the UK, and around the world in the coming months.

However, the sudden silence of my characters feels like a reproach and I am currently working on a second book.

My husband and I are living the good life in south-west France, where I am writing in bed, early in the morning when the only distraction is our cockerel, Sparky, crowing. ~ Goodreads
