Release Day! The Wedding Veil by Kristy Woodson Harvey ~ My Thoughts #TheWeddingVeil

 Happy Release Day!!

Congrats Kristy
on the release today of
The Wedding Veil!!

The Wedding Veil by Kristy Woodson Harvey
Historical Fiction, 416 pages
Published March 29, 2022 by Gallery Books

The New York Times bestselling author of Under the Southern Sky and the Peachtree Bluff series brings “her signature wit, charm, and heart” (Woman’s World) to this sweeping new novel following four women across generations, bound by a beautiful wedding veil and a connection to the famous Vanderbilt family.

Four women. One family heirloom. A secret connection that will change their lives—and history as they know it.

Present Day: Julia Baxter’s wedding veil, bequeathed to her great-grandmother by a mysterious woman on a train in the 1930s, has passed through generations of her family as a symbol of a happy marriage. But on the morning of her wedding day, something tells her that even the veil’s good luck isn’t enough to make her marriage last forever. Overwhelmed and panicked, she escapes to the Virgin Islands to clear her head. Meanwhile, her grandmother Babs is also feeling shaken. Still grieving the death of her beloved husband, she decides to move out of the house they once shared and into a retirement community. Though she hopes it’s a new beginning, she does not expect to run into an old flame, dredging up the same complicated emotions she felt a lifetime ago.

1914: Socialite Edith Vanderbilt is struggling to manage the luxurious Biltmore Estate after the untimely death of her cherished husband. With 250 rooms to oversee and an entire village dependent on her family to stay afloat, Edith is determined to uphold the Vanderbilt legacy—and prepare her free-spirited daughter Cornelia to inherit it—in spite of her family’s deteriorating financial situation. But Cornelia has dreams of her own. Asheville, North Carolina has always been her safe haven away from the prying eyes of the press, but as she explores more of the rapidly changing world around her, she’s torn between upholding tradition and pursuing the exciting future that lies beyond Biltmore’s gilded gates.

In the vein of Therese Anne Fowler’s A Well-Behaved Woman and Jennifer Robson’s The Gown, The Wedding Veil brings to vivid life a group of remarkable women forging their own paths—and explores the mystery of a national heirloom lost to time.

My thoughts about The Wedding Veil ~~

(I love to note the first lines of the books I'm reading. First lines can really grab a reader's attention and I love seeing where the author takes the reader after their first lines.)

First lines—"June 5, 1879 - Six-year-old Edith Dresser's skates moved heavily, as if she were rolling through sand, across the patterned wool rug in her mother Susan's bedroom."

I love historical fiction and Kristy Woodson Harvey is one of my must-read authors so when I found out that her new book was historical fiction, I was through the roof excited. I couldn't wait to read the story she created. I've loved everything that she has written so I knew this would be excellent.

The Wedding Veil did not disappoint. Four generations sharing the same beautiful wedding veil. Oh, the stories that veil could tell. I loved reading about the love that the veil came to mean to each bride as well as learning about each woman and the lives that they lived. What an amazing group of strong, independent women forging ahead with their lives.

As with any historical fiction story I read, I love learning the actual history that the author has researched and placed into their story. To weave such an entertaining, enlightening story around history is truly special.

I absolutely loved everything about The Wedding Veil and highly recommend it, especially for historical fiction fans. And if you have not read KWH's stories yet, this one would be a great one to start with.

I received a ARC of The Wedding Veil and this is my honest opinion of the book.

Release Day! The Next Thing You Know by Jessica Strawser ~ My Thoughts #TheNextThingYouKnow

Happy Release Day!

Congrats Jessica
on the release today of
The Next Thing You Know!

The Next Thing You Know by Jessica Strawser
Fiction, Drama, 352 pages
Published March 22, 2022 by St. Martin’s Press

A musician facing the untimely end of his career. An end-of-life doula with everything, and nothing, to lose. A Star Is Born meets Me Before You in this powerful novel by the author of A Million Reasons Why.

As an end-of-life doula, Nova Huston’s job—her calling, her purpose, her life—is to help terminally ill people make peace with their impending death. Unlike her business partner, who swears by her system of checklists, free-spirited Nova doesn’t shy away from difficult clients: the ones who are heartbreakingly young, or prickly, or desperate for a caregiver or companion.

When Mason Shaylor shows up at her door, Nova doesn’t recognize him as the indie-favorite singer-songwriter who recently vanished from the public eye. She knows only what he’s told her: That life as he knows it is over. His deteriorating condition makes playing his guitar physically impossible—as far as Mason is concerned, he might as well be dead already.

Except he doesn’t know how to say goodbye.

Helping him is Nova’s biggest challenge yet. She knows she should keep clients at arm’s length. But she and Mason have more in common than anyone could guess… and meeting him might turn out to be the hardest, best thing that’s ever happened to them both.

The Next Thing You Know is an emotional, resonant story about the power of human connection, love when you least expect it, hope against the odds, and what it really takes to live life with no regrets.

My thoughts about The Next Thing You Know ~~

(I love to note the first lines of the books I'm reading. First lines can really grab a reader's attention and I love seeing where the author takes the reader after their first line.)

First line—"Mason had already promised himself he wouldn't make any decisions today."

I have to admit this story started out slow for me. I didn't feel connected to the characters. I was confused by what was going on and what wasn't being said. I have read other books by this author so I knew it should have been a good read.

Well, somewhere along the way I think maybe I figured out what the author was doing. I was feeling the way the characters were feeling and interacting with each other—confused and leaving out parts of their stories. (Jessica, if this wasn't intentional, don't tell me, let me believe I figured out your intent.) 😉

As feelings and facts were revealed, both in the book and in my mind, I became very attached to the characters and was emotional right along with everyone else involved. And then I devoured the story!

And I felt all of the frustration that they did, as well as their love, compassion, hope, and forgiveness. This would be a great book to re-read, just to see the characters in a new light from the very beginning.

The Next Thing You Know ended up being an amazing story that will truly stick with me for a long time. I loved everything about it. The characters grew on me and lessons were learned—to realize that you don't always know what someone is going through, so you just need to give them a chance.

I received a copy of The Next Thing You Know from the publisher via NetGalley and this is my honest opinion.

Release Day! The Recovery Agent by Janet Evanovich ~ My Thoughts #TheRecoveryAgent

Happy Release Day!

Congrats Janet
on the release today of
The Recovery Agent!

The Recovery Agent by Janet Evanovich
Series: (Gabriela Rose, #1)
Mystery, Adventure, Humor, 320 pages
Published March 22, 2022 by Atria Books

Lost something? Gabriela Rose knows how to get it back. As a recovery agent, she’s hired by individuals and companies seeking lost treasures, stolen heirlooms, or missing assets of any kind. She’s reliable, cool under pressure, and well trained in weapons of all types. But Gabriela’s latest job isn’t for some bamboozled billionaire, it’s for her own family, whose home is going to be wiped off the map if they can’t come up with a lot of money fast.

Inspired by an old family legend, Gabriela sets off for the jungles of Peru in pursuit of the Ring of Solomon and the lost treasure of Cortez. But this particular job comes with a huge problem attached to it—Gabriela’s ex-husband, Rafer. It’s Rafer who has the map that possibly points the way to the treasure, and he’s not about to let Gabriela find it without him.

Rafer is as relaxed as Gabriela is driven, and he has a lifetime’s experience getting under his ex-wife’s skin. But when they aren’t bickering about old times the two make a formidable team, and it’s going to take a team to defeat the vicious drug lord who has also been searching for the fabled ring. A drug lord who doesn’t mind leaving a large body count behind him to get it.

The Recovery Agent marks the start of an irresistible new series that will have you clamoring for more and cheering for the unstoppable Gabriela Rose on every page.

My thoughts about The Recovery Agent ~~

(I love to note the first lines of the books I'm reading. First lines can really grab a reader's attention and I love seeing where the author takes the reader after their first line.)

First line—"Gabriela Rose was standing in a small clearing that led to a rope-and-board footbridge. The narrow bridge spanned a gorge that was a hundred feet deep and almost as wide."

Okay, to be honest, I haven't read The Recovery Agent yet. I won a print copy from Goodreads but because of my already committed review schedule, life, and my lack of time before we leave on a two week road trip, I didn't get to it. I'm super excited to dive into it and it's absolutely going on vacation with me.

But.... since I'm a huge fan of Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series, I had to spotlight this new release! If this series is anything like the SP series, I know it's going to be a hoot to read. Evanovich has a great sense of humor, which totally comes out in her series, and I can't wait to meet her new character Gabriella Rose and see where she takes me. I expect it will be a wild ride!

New Release! Shore Road by Joanne DeMaio ~ My Thoughts #ShoreRoad

Shore Road

Shore Road by Joanne DeMaio
Women's Saga, 244 pages
Published March 1, 2022 by Joanne DeMaio

From New York Times bestselling author Joanne DeMaio comes Shore Road, Book 14 of The Seaside Saga.

Salt air drifts in through the windows. Swaying marsh grasses whisper. Seagulls cry overhead. Off the docks, rowboats are anchored in a calm inlet. Beyond, shingled cottages look silver beneath rays of sunlight. Seafood shacks are strung with fishing net and lobster buoys. You're driving on SHORE ROAD.

And every turn off this dusty beach road gets you to the sea. Tucked-away Connecticut beaches are aplenty here, but you could almost miss one. Just a narrow lane forking off Shore Road leads to Stony Point. That lane is nearly hidden by the stone train trestle running over it.

But, look. Seems many of the beach friends are turning beneath that trestle. Some enter Stony Point alone, while others leave together. A salty pickup truck veers onto Shore Road and quickly takes off. Beneath the trestle, another car turns in as a German shepherd gives a bark from the backseat. Some friends wave as they pass each other on Shore Road. Others duck so as not to be seen. Some cruise with the radio turned up; some drive in silence. One has a silky scarf tying back windblown hair. Another wears dark sunglasses to shield the summer sun, and some sadness.

Though Shore Road takes each beach friend on a very different journey, one thing's for certain. It's sure to be an unforgettable ride.

My thoughts about Shore Road ~~

(I love to note the first lines of the books I'm reading. First lines can really grab a reader's attention and I love seeing where the author takes the reader after their first line.)

First line—"The cottage is too quiet. Though the sun isn't even up yet, Jason Barlow's been awake for awhile. Listening. Waiting to notice some sound."

I love this series and I love how much I have come to know all of the characters of Stony Point. There is always new drama, plenty of love, and more adventures with each book. I never know what is going to happen and how relationships are going to change

Shore Road continues the saga of the friends of Stony Point as they live their lives and move on. With each book, the reader comes to learn more about their pasts, and gets to understand more about their present as they move into the future.

I have loved all of my visits to Stony Point and enjoy hanging out with the gang. I can't wait to devour each new book when it comes out and anxiously await the next one. I highly recommend this Seaside Saga series!

I received a copy of Shore Road from the author and this is my honest opinion.

Release Day! The Book of Cold Cases by Simone St. James ~ My Thoughts #TheBookOfColdCases

Happy Release Day!

Congrats Simone
on the release today of
The Book of Cold Cases!

The Book of Cold Cases by Simone St. James
Mystery, Thriller, 352 pages
Published March 15 by Berkley

A true crime blogger gets more than she bargained for while interviewing the woman acquitted of two cold case slayings in this chilling new novel from the New York Times bestselling author of The Sun Down Motel.

In 1977, Claire Lake, Oregon, was shaken by the Lady Killer Murders: Two men, seemingly randomly, were murdered with the same gun, with strange notes left behind. Beth Greer was the perfect suspect--a rich, eccentric twenty-three-year-old woman, seen fleeing one of the crimes. But she was acquitted, and she retreated to the isolation of her mansion.

Oregon, 2017. Shea Collins is a receptionist, but by night, she runs a true crime website, the Book of Cold Cases--a passion fueled by the attempted abduction she escaped as a child. When she meets Beth by chance, Shea asks her for an interview. To Shea's surprise, Beth says yes.

They meet regularly at Beth's mansion, though Shea is never comfortable there. Items move when she's not looking, and she could swear she's seen a girl outside the window. The allure of learning the truth about the case from the smart, charming Beth is too much to resist, but even as they grow closer, Shea senses something isn't right. Is she making friends with a manipulative murderer, or are there other dangers lurking in the darkness of the Greer house?

My thoughts about The Book of Cold Cases ~~

(I love to note the first lines of the books I'm reading. First lines can really grab a reader's attention and I love seeing where the author takes the reader after their first lines.)

First lines—"The Greer mansion sat high on a hill, overlooking the town and the ocean."

I have read Simone St. James' last three novels, and OMG, each one is better and more suspenseful than the previous one. I don't know how she does it, but this author just keeps creating amazing stories!

The Book of Cold Cases is chock full of creepiness and ghosts and things that go bump in the night. Exactly what I love! This is a story that will make you want to keep turning the pages, but seriously, can your heart take it?

I highly recommend this book but make sure you have a big block of time to devote to it because you will not be able to put it down. The Book of Cold Cases will blow your mind!

I received an ARC of The Book of Cold Cases from the publisher via NetGalley and this is my honest opinion.

Happy Release Day!

Congrats Greer & Sarah
on the release today of
The Golden Couple!

The Golden Couple by Greer Hendricks & Sarah Pekkanen

Published March 8, 2022 by St. Martin's Press

The Golden Couple is the next electrifying novel from Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen, the #1 New York Times bestselling author duo behind You Are Not Alone, An Anonymous Girl, and The Wife Between Us.

If Avery Chambers can’t fix you in 10 sessions, she won’t take you on as a client. Her successes are phenomenal--she helps people overcome everything from domineering parents to assault--and almost absorb the emptiness she sometimes feels since her husband’s death.

Marissa and Mathew Bishop seem like the golden couple--until Marissa cheats. She wants to repair things, both because she loves her husband and for the sake of their 8-year-old son. After a friend forwards an article about Avery, Marissa takes a chance on this maverick therapist, who lost her license due to controversial methods.

When the Bishops glide through Avery’s door and Marissa reveals her infidelity, all three are set on a collision course. Because the biggest secrets in the room are still hidden, and it’s no longer simply a marriage that’s in danger.

My thoughts about The Golden Couple ~~

(I love to note the first lines of the books I'm reading. First lines can really grab a reader's attention and I love seeing where the author takes the reader after their first lines.)

First lines—"I never know what to expect when I open my door to new clients."

This amazing author duo has done it again! To paraphrase their opening line, I never know when to expect when I open the covers of one of their books. Except I know it's going to be an amazingly exciting ride. This one did not disappoint.

So many secrets, so many twists and turns. I totally devoured this book and couldn't wait to get to the end so that all of my questions and suspicions could be answered. These two authors can weave such an interesting, enticing storyline that will keep you guessing.

I loved The Golden Couple and have this duo's books high on my to-read list every time. Grab it! If you like psychological thrillers as much as I do, I know you'll love it.

I received a copy of The Golden Couple from the publisher via NetGalley and this is my honest opinion.
