*****************

The Almost Sisters
by Joshilyn Jackson
ARC ~ Published July 2017

With empathy, grace, humor, and piercing insight, the author of Gods in Alabama pens a powerful, emotionally resonant novel of the South that confronts the truth about privilege, family, and the distinctions between perception and reality - the stories we tell ourselves about our origins and who we really are.

Superheroes have always been Leia Birch Briggs' weakness. One tequila-soaked night at a comics convention, the usually level-headed graphic novelist is swept off her barstool by a handsome and anonymous Batman.

It turns out the caped crusader has left her with more than just a nice, fuzzy memory. She's having a baby boy - an unexpected but not unhappy development in the thirty-eight year-old's life. But before Leia can break the news of her impending single-motherhood (including the fact that her baby is biracial) to her conventional, Southern family, her step-sister Rachel's marriage implodes. Worse, she learns her beloved ninety-year-old grandmother, Birchie, is losing her mind, and she's been hiding her dementia with the help of Wattie, her best friend since girlhood.

Leia returns to Alabama to put her grandmother's affairs in order, clean out the big Victorian that has been in the Birch family for generations, and tell her family that she's pregnant. Yet just when Leia thinks she's got it all under control, she learns that illness is not the only thing Birchie's been hiding. Tucked in the attic is a dangerous secret with roots that reach all the way back to the Civil War. Its exposure threatens the family's freedom and future, and it will change everything about how Leia sees herself and her sister, her son and his missing father, and the world she thinks she knows.

The Whispering Room
Jane Hawk #2
by Dean Koontz
ARC ~ Published November 2017

Jane Hawk - fiction's most relentless, resourceful, stunning new heroine - continues her battle against a murderous conspiracy in the riveting sequel to The Silent Corner.

"No time to delay. Do what you were born to do. Fame will be yours when you do this."

These are the words that ring in the mind of mild-mannered, beloved schoolteacher Cora Gundersun - just before she takes her own life, and many others', in a shocking act of carnage. When the disturbing contents of her secret journal are discovered, it seems certain that she must have been insane. But Jane Hawk knows better.

In the wake of her husband's inexplicable suicide - and the equally mysterious deaths of scores of other exemplary individuals - Jane picks up the trail of a secret cabal of powerful players who think themselves above the law and beyond punishment. But the ruthless people bent on hijacking America's future for their own monstrous ends never banked on a highly trained FBI agent willing to go rogue - and become the nation's most wanted fugitive - in order to derail their insidious plans to gain absolute power with a terrifying technological breakthrough.

Driven by love for her lost husband and by fear for the five-year-old son she has sent into hiding, Jane Hawk has become an unstoppable predator. Those she is hunting will have nowhere to run when her shadow falls across them.

New Release! Red Thread of Fate by Lyn Liao Butler ~ My Thoughts #RedThreadOfFate

Congratulations Lyn
 on the recent release of
Red Thread of Fate!

Red Thread of Fate by Lyn Liao Butler
Contemporary Fiction, 352 pages
Published February 8, 2022 by Berkley Books

In the wake of a tragedy and fueled by guilt from a secret she's kept for years, a woman discovers how delicate the thread that binds family is in this powerful novel by Lyn Liao Butler.

Two days before Tam and Tony Kwan receive their letter of acceptance for the son they are adopting from China, Tony and his estranged cousin Mia are killed unexpectedly in an accident. A shell-shocked Tam learns she is named the guardian to Mia's five-year-old daughter, Angela. With no other family around, Tam has no choice but to agree to take in the girl she hasn't seen since the child was an infant.

Overwhelmed by her life suddenly being upended, Tam must also decide if she will complete the adoption on her own and bring home the son waiting for her in a Chinese orphanage. But when a long-concealed secret comes to light just as she and Angela start to bond, their fragile family is threatened. As Tam begins to unravel the events of Tony and Mia's past in China, she discovers the true meaning of love and the threads that bind her to the family she is fated to have.

Fans of Amy Tan, Celeste Ng, Liane Moriarty, and Lyn’s last book The Tiger Mom’s Tale will love this suspenseful and heartwarming tale of family, culture, and forgiveness.

My thoughts about Red Thread of Fate~~

(I love to note the first lines of the books I'm reading. First lines can really grab a reader's attention and I love seeing where the author takes the reader after their first lines.)

First lines—"She was on the phone with her husband when he died."

Oh my gosh! This story had my attention from the very first sentence. After that shocking and intriguing first sentence, the entire story drew me in. I felt deeply for Tam and what she was going through. So many questions, so many secrets.

I pretty much put my life on hold to inhale this book and I loved every second of it! The storyline was captivating and the characters were loveable. The writing flowed from the pages and I felt very comfortable in Tam's world. I just want to squeeze Angela, she's so precious.

Lyn Liao Butler is a new-to-me author who has now become one of my must-read authors. I love her writing style and absolutely loved this story. I'm now off to get her first book to enjoy and I am looking forward to whatever she writes next.

Definite 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 read for me!

I received a complimentary copy of Red Thread of Fate and this is my honest opinion.

About the author

Lyn Liao Butler was born in Taiwan and moved to the States when she was seven. Before becoming an author, she was a professional ballet and modern dancer, and is still a personal trainer, fitness instructor, and yoga instructor. She is an avid animal lover and fosters dogs as well as volunteers with rescues.

When she is not torturing clients or talking to imaginary characters, Lyn enjoys spending time with her FDNY husband, their son (the happiest little boy in the world), their three stubborn dachshunds, sewing for her Etsy shop, and trying crazy yoga poses on a stand-up paddleboard. So far, she has not fallen into the water yet. ~ Goodreads

This OR That #Giveaway Week 48 ~ The First Husband by Laura Dave OR The Book of Longings by Sue Monk Kidd #TheFirstHusband #TheBookOfLongings

I have sooooo many books!

The This or That Giveaway! feature that I post every Saturday is a way for me to clear my shelves and to share some of the many books I have. It's a way for me to cull my collection and give someone else the chance to enjoy these treasures.

Good luck and be sure to stop back next week!

The First Husband
by Laura Dave
Hardcover ~ Published April 2011

New York Times Bestselling Novelist Jonathan Tropper says: "Laura Dave positive shines with wisdom and intelligence. And what truly sets Dave apart is her ability to convey the contradictions and imperfections, the inherent impossibility of true love, and yet somehow still make you believe in it."

Annie Adams thinks she has it all. Her longtime boyfriend, Nick, is on the verge of becoming a successful film director, her travel column is nationally syndicated, and they've got a great dog. Her life finally feels like it is falling into place. Until, out of nowhere, Nick announces that he's reconnected with a woman from his past and he's moving out. Reeling from Nick's exit, Annie stumbles into her neighborhood bar and finds Griffin, a down to earth chef who seems to be everything she didn’t know she wanted. Three months later, they’re married. And Annie finds herself in a small Massachusetts town -- completely unmoored and wondering if she’s picked a life on the rebound.

A wry observer of modern love, Laura Dave "steers clear of easy answers to explore the romantic choices we make" (USA Today). The First Husband is her most delightful work to date, bursting with humor, and rife with surprising insight about love, marriage, family, and fresh starts -- in the places we least expect to find them.

Marie Claire Magazine says: "Delicious and comforting. With an ending as satisfying as cream cheese frosting."

The Book of Longings
by Sue Monk Kidd
Paperback ~ Published April 2020

"An extraordinary novel . . . a triumph of insight and storytelling." --Associated Press

"A true masterpiece." --Glennon Doyle, author of Untamed

An extraordinary story set in the first century about a woman who finds her voice and her destiny, from the celebrated number one New York Times bestselling author of The Secret Life of Bees and The Invention of Wings.

In her mesmerizing fourth work of fiction, Sue Monk Kidd takes an audacious approach to history and brings her acclaimed narrative gifts to imagine the story of a young woman named Ana. Raised in a wealthy family with ties to the ruler of Galilee, she is rebellious and ambitious, with a brilliant mind and a daring spirit. She engages in furtive scholarly pursuits and writes narratives about neglected and silenced women. Ana is expected to marry an older widower, a prospect that horrifies her. An encounter with eighteen-year-old Jesus changes everything.

Their marriage evolves with love and conflict, humor and pathos in Nazareth, where Ana makes a home with Jesus, his brothers, and their mother, Mary. Ana's pent-up longings intensify amid the turbulent resistance to Rome's occupation of Israel, partially led by her brother, Judas. She is sustained by her fearless aunt Yaltha, who harbors a compelling secret. When Ana commits a brazen act that puts her in peril, she flees to Alexandria, where startling revelations and greater dangers unfold, and she finds refuge in unexpected surroundings. Ana determines her fate during a stunning convergence of events considered among the most impactful in human history.

Grounded in meticulous research and written with a reverential approach to Jesus's life that focuses on his humanity, The Book of Longings is an inspiring, unforgettable account of one woman's bold struggle to realize the passion and potential inside her, while living in a time, place and culture devised to silence her. It is a triumph of storytelling both timely and timeless, from a masterful writer at the height of her powers.

This OR That #Giveaway Week 47 ~ Finding Libbie by Deanna Lynn Sletten OR Nearly Departed in Deadwood by Ann Charles #NearlyDepartedInDeadwood #FindingLibbie

I have sooooo many books!

The This or That Giveaway! feature that I post every Saturday is a way for me to clear my shelves and to share some of the many books I have. It's a way for me to cull my collection and give someone else the chance to enjoy these treasures.

Today I have books by two of my very favorite authors of all time. I have extra copies of these books. No way I'm giving up my personal copies! 😍 I wanted to introduce you to both of them and their books so you can enjoy them as much as I do.

I have met both Deanna and Ann several times and consider them friends—friends who just happen to write amazing stories.

Good luck and be sure to stop back next week!

Finding Libbie
By Deanna Lynn Sletten
Paperback ~ Published September 2016

Poring over a dusty hatbox of photographs in her grandmother’s closet, Emily Prentice is shocked to discover her father was married to his high school sweetheart before meeting her mother.

In the summer of 1968, Jack and Libbie fall in love under the spell of their small town, untouched by the chaos of the late sixties. Though Libbie’s well-to-do parents disapprove of Jack’s humble family and his aspiration to become a mechanic, she marries Jack a year after they graduate high school. But soon their happiness crumbles as Libbie’s mental state unravels and she is drawn to alcohol and drugs. Despite his efforts to help her, Jack loses the woman he loves and is forced to move on with his life.

Now that Emily’s mother has passed away, Jack is alone again, and Emily grows obsessed with the beautiful woman who had given her father such joy. Determined to find Libbie, Emily pieces together the couple’s fragmented past. But is it too late for happy endings?

Finding Libbie is one of my favorites of Deanna's books and one that I have read several times. And as I have said before, I'm typically not a re-reader of books but this one did it for me. It is incredible!

Nearly Departed in Deadwood
by Ann Charles
Paperback ~ Published January 2011

Little girls are vanishing from Deadwood, South Dakota. Fearing her daughter might be next, single mom, Violet Parker, is desperate to find the monster behind the abductions.

EXCERPT:

What did it mean to dream about the same place? While contemplating that question, I tried to find an opening through the field.

Grabbing handfuls of grass, I pushed and pulled every which way. No matter how much I yanked, the vast wall of swaying grasses remained. Feeling defeated, I thought I would try one last time.

Then he appeared.

“Don’t you ever give up?” he said in the most hypnotic voice. His lips twitched, amused by my efforts.

“Umm …” Stunned to see someone looking at me, I stared at the most perfect, glorious face, and I couldn’t take my eyes off him.

As his gaze continued to pierce mine, he stepped in my direction. Having no other choice, I retreated. He was intimidating, and his authority made me willingly compliant. My heart pounded mercilessly as I wondered what that guy could be doing here.

He certainly fit the description of how I had envisioned the man of my dreams: six feet tall, dark hair, and warm, inviting brown eyes. He was lean but extraordinarily muscular, and his skin appeared to be made of satin.

My face warmed as I admired his body. I wondered if he could read my unclean thoughts or hear my heart racing.

Time seemed to stop as we stared into each other’s eyes—no need for words, just alone in each other’s company.

The tension broke when he spoke. “What are you doing here? Do you want to be sent back like before?”

Hearing his velvety voice again sent pleasant tingles to my core. But send me back like before? Then it dawned on me. It was his voice I had heard in my last dream. Although I felt frustrated and angered by his comments, I tried to stay calm and see where the dream would take me.

“First of all, who are you?” I tried to sound composed. “And what are you doing in my dream?”

“Your dream? You think this is a dream? Think again.”

Release Day! With Love from London by Sarah Jio ~ My Thoughts #WithLoveFromLondon

Happy Release Day!!

Congrats Sarah
on the release today of
With Love from London!!

With Love from London by Sarah Jio
Contemporary, Women's Saga, 240 pages
Published February 8, 2022 by Ballantine Books

A librarian inherits a bookshop from her estranged mother, leading her halfway across the world on a journey of self-discovery that transcends time and honors the unbreakable bonds of love and family.

When librarian Valentina Baker was a teenager, her mother, Eloise, unexpectedly fled to her native London, leaving Val and her father on their own. Now in her thirties and fresh out of a failed marriage, Val feels a nagging disenchantment with her life--and knows she is still heartbroken over her mother's abandonment.

In a bittersweet twist of fate, Val receives word that Eloise has passed away, leaving Val her Primrose Hill apartment and the deed to a bookshop Val never knew she'd owned. Though the news is devastating, Val finds herself more determined than ever to discover who her mother truly was. She jets across the Atlantic, departing Seattle for a new life in charming London.

Slowly but surely, Val begins to piece together Eloise's life in the UK, falling in love with her pastel-colored flat, cozy neighborhood, and tucked-away storefront. But when she discovers that The Book Garden is in danger of going under, Val must work with its eccentric staff to get it in working order. In the process, she learns more about Eloise than she ever thought possible. And as Val races to save the shop, Eloise's own story unfolds, leading both mother and daughter to unearth revelatory truths.

My thoughts about With Love from London ~~

(I love to note the first lines of the books I'm reading. First lines can really grab a reader's attention and I love seeing where the author takes the reader after their first lines.)

First lines—"'There are far better things ahead than any we leave behind.' says the stranger sitting next to me on the airplanea sixty-something woman with feathered bangs and a hair tie clinging so tightly on her left wrist that I've spent most of the flight worried it might turn into a medical emergency."

I have read and loved every single one of Sarah Jio's books. I have been a huge fan ever since her very first book and am always so excited when she has a new one out. Each and every one of them is a form of escape for me, with her wonderful settings and characters that I come to love.

Well, With Love from London has now captured a special place in my book-loving heart, with a librarian as the main character and the setting, a bookstore in London. Sigh!

I loved experiencing a new life right along with Valentina, as she learns about her mom's past and why she abandoned her daughter all those years ago. The route to her discoveries was all part of the fun, as Val comes to know and love all of her mom's somewhat eccentric friends.

I'm not usually a re-reader of books, but this one just may be one that I savor again. There is just so much to love about it and I can't wait to enjoy it again. I highly recommend With Love from London, especially if you are a book-lover like me.

I received a copy of With Love from London via NetGalley and this is my honest opinion of the book.
