It's Monday! What Are You Reading? August 21, 2023 #IMWAYR

It's Monday! What Are You Reading? is a place to meet up and share what you have been, are and about to be reading over the week. It's an opportunity to visit other blogs and to comment on their reads. And ... you can add to that ever growing TBR pile! So welcome everyone. This meme started with J Kaye's Blog and then was taken up by Sheila from Book Journey. Sheila then passed it on to Kathryn at the Book Date. And here we are!

New Release! The One That Got Away by Charlotte Rixon ~ My Thoughts #TheOneThatGotAway @charduck

Congrats Charlotte
on the recent release of
The One That Got Away!

The One That Got Away by Charlotte Rixon
Fiction, Contemporary Romance, 304 pages
Published August 15, 2023 by St. Martin's Press

A sweeping, poignant novel spanning two decades, about first love, first heartbreak, and the ones we never forget, for listeners of Jill Santopolo, Rosie Walsh, and Colleen Hoover.

Two years together.

Twenty years apart.

One day to change their story.

2000. Benjamin’s world is turned upside down the night he meets Clara. Instinctively, he knows that they are meant for each other, but a devastating mistake on their last night at university will take their lives in very different directions.

20 years later, Clara has a high-profile job and a handsome husband. But despite the trappings of success, she isn't happy, and she knows that a piece of her heart still belongs to Benjamin, the boy she fell in love with years earlier. The boy whose life she fears she ruined.

When a bombing is reported in the city where they first met, Clara is pulled back to a place she tries not to remember and the first love she could never forget. Searching for Benjamin, Clara is forced to confront the events that tore them apart. But is it too late to put right what went wrong?

Across the miles and spanning decades, Charlotte Rixon's The One That Got Away is a sweeping, poignant story about growing up, growing apart, the people who first steal our hearts, and the surprising, winding roads that love can take us on.

My thoughts about The One That Got Away ~~

(I love to note the first lines of the books I'm reading. First lines can really grab a reader's attention and I love seeing where the author takes the reader after their first lines.)

First line—"It's a hotter day than anyone anticipated for April and he's sweating, but not just because of the heat."

This sentence, taken from the blub—story about growing up, growing apart, the people who first steal our hearts, and the surprising, winding roads that love can take us on—sums up this story perfectly. Do any of us really forget our first love and wonder what our life would be like if that relationship would've just worked out?

Clara and Benjamin are very much in love and have hopes for the perfect life together, until it all goes wrong. As they each live their separate lives, they can't forget about what they had. Twenty years later, another tragedy throws them together and are the sparks still there?

I enjoyed The One That Got Away and was totally rooting for this wonderful couple. They aren't perfect by any means but then, who is? The goal is to be happy in your life and I was hoping for the best for them. I look forward to reading more by this author.

I received an ARC of The One That Got Away from the publisher via NetGalley and this is my honest opinion.

The One That Got Away by Bethany Chase

The One That Got Away

The One That Got Away by Bethany Chase
Print and e-book, 352 pages
Published March 31st 2015 by Ballantine Books

Perfect for fans of Emily Giffin and Jennifer Weiner, this bright, funny debut from a fresh voice in fiction offers a delicious take on love, family, and what it means to build a home of one’s own.

Sarina Mahler thinks she has her life all nailed down: a growing architecture practice in Austin, Texas, and an any-day-now proposal from her loving boyfriend, Noah. She’s well on her way to having the family she’s hoped for since her mother’s death ten years ago. But with Noah on a temporary assignment abroad and retired Olympic swimmer — and former flame — Eamon Roy back in town asking her to renovate his new fixer-upper, Sarina’s life takes an unexpected turn.

Eamon proves to be Sarina’s dream client, someone who instinctively trusts every one of her choices — and Sarina is reminded of all the reasons she was first drawn to him back in the day. Suddenly her carefully planned future with Noah seems a little less than perfect. And when tragedy strikes, Sarina is left reeling. With her world completely upended, she is forced to question what she truly wants in life — and in love.

Full of both humor and heartbreak, The One That Got Away is the story of one woman’s discovery that, sometimes, life is what happens when you leave the blueprints behind.

My thoughts about The One That Got Away ~~

The One That Got Away is an entertaining, emotional read. Sarina has it all, a great job and a devoted boyfriend. When a guy from her past comes back into her life, she realizes that her relationship with her boyfriend just may be missing the passion that true love is supposed to be all about. She struggles with what she wants and what should be the "right thing" to do.

I loved all the different relationships in the story and the author does a great job of making those all believable. First up is the relationship between Sarina and Eamon, pretty intense let me tell you, but what a thoughtful, great guy Eamon is. Then there's Sarina's roommate, Danny. He's a hoot and calls it like he sees it. Sarina and Noah - nice guy but seems rather spoiled to me. I think the one that pulled on my heartstrings the most was Sarina and John, her stepfather. They really had a wonderful relationship and that is the one that got pretty emotional for me. I love it when an author can pull me into a story so much that I become emotionally involved with the characters and what they are going through.

The One That Got Away is Bethany's debut novel and she definitely has a hit on her hands. I am excited to see what else she has up her sleeve. Great job, Bethany!
