Mending Broken Threads by E.D. Hackett
Publication date: January 28th 2025
Genres: Adult, Women’s Fiction

Family secrets never stay buried for long…

Lynette Waller, a divorced Chicagoan, finds herself face to face with the demons of her past after her estranged mother passes away. Standing in her childhood home for the first time in decades, she learns of her mother’s past mistakes and regret through a magic suitcase, a medium, and her equally estranged daughter, Ruby.

To her parents’ disdain, Ruby Franklin traded security for chaos when she dropped out of college to pursue her modeling career in California. When an unexpected phone call sends her to Maine for her beloved grandmother’s passing, she finds herself emotionally unprepared for a family reunion.

The magic suitcase allows Lynette and Ruby to see into the matriarch’s past, but what lessons do her secrets hold? As they search for answers, they find that sometimes the truth is hiding in plain sight. With the help of Mema’s memories, will this mother-daughter duo heal old wounds and find the love buried within their past?

If you adore mother-daughter stories, heartwarming relationships, and transformative journeys, you’ll love this women’s fiction novel Mending Broken Threads.

EXCERPT

Later that night, Lynette lay in her parent’s old bed, huddled under the massive pile of blankets. Suddenly spooked by the shadows in the room and the anticipation of sleep, she pulled the blankets to her eyes and closed them tight.

Her heart raced when her body jerked at the sound of a tree branch breaking outside. It must be an animal or the wind. Lynette flipped on the bedside lamp and scanned the room. The closet doors remained shut, the hallway light spread from under the door, and a pile of dirty clothes sat in the far corner. Nothing looked amiss.

She closed her eyes again, and thoughts of ghosts, spirits, and mediums infiltrated her mind. Freaking herself out, she turned on the tv at a low volume and focused on the sound of the eleven o’clock news.

When her eyes became heavy, she closed them for a moment, praying that morning would arrive fast. When she opened her eyes, her body bolted upright and her fingers gripped the sheets. Tiny beads of sweat formed along the nape of her neck. She wiped her neck, closed her eyes, and rubbed her temples.

It was only a dream. The thought didn’t calm her mind, but solidified her hunch that Mom and Dad were expecting when they married, but in this dream, Mom was pregnant. Like, really pregnant and wearing that awful top from the suitcase. Dad stood at a grill, cooking outside, and Mom sat in a chair knitting. Knitting…was that Loretta? But Dad called the baby Lorraine. Lorraine, Lorraine…there was no Lorraine. And Mom looked sad, always sad. Lynette felt her unhappiness, which solidified her assumption that Mom didn’t want to get married. Whatever happened to Lorraine? Worst-case scenarios popped through Lynette’s mind. And why was she kept a secret all these years?

Unable to handle her thoughts any longer, she hopped out of bed and ran to her old bedroom. “Ruby.” She barged open and through the door, finding her daughter fast asleep. Gripping and shaking her shoulder, she said, “Ruby, wake up. I need to talk to you.”

Release Day! Southern Simmer by Ashley Farley ~ My Thoughts #SouthernSimmer

Happy Release Day!

Congrats Ashley
on release today of
Southern Simmer!

Southern Simmer by Ashley Farley
Southern Fiction, Sister Fiction, 251 pages
Published January 28, 2025, by AHF Publishing

Bibi’s marriage is in trouble, thanks to her stepdaughter, Scarlett, who has driven a wedge between her and Beau. Frustrated and feeling invisible, Bibi vanishes for a few days, hoping to regain her husband’s attention. But instead of the reaction she’d hoped for, Beau reports her missing—along with his family’s priceless heirloom jewels. Now, Bibi’s escape has become headline news, and she’s caught in a web of suspicion she never saw coming.

Kate is wary of the newcomer—who leaves home without their cell phone? Though she hates to admit it, jealousy flares when Silas, her current love interest, fawns over the striking beauty. But Kate has no real claim on him—they’ve only been on one date. When she spots Silas coming out of Bibi’s room during the night, her suspicions grow. Who exactly is this woman, and what is she hiding?

For Shelby, her unplanned pregnancy isn’t a mistake—it’s a lifeline. She’s convinced this baby will fill the emptiness that has haunted her for far too long. Determined to claim this child as hers alone, Shelby refuses to take a paternity test to find out whether Josh or Matt is the father. But the Maybe Daddies are determined to uncover the truth—whether Shelby’s ready for it or not.

My thoughts about Southern Simmer ~~

(I love to note the first lines of the books I'm reading. First lines can really grab a reader's attention and I love seeing where the author takes the reader after their first lines.)

First lines—"Bianca put the finishing touches on the tablescape and stepped back to admire her work. Crystal glistened, and silver gleamed."

Going into this book, I knew it was probably going to be the last in this series, which made me sad. That's just how Ashley does it, writing in threes. So I knew a lot of the drama and issues were going to resolved, for better or worse. But you know what? It was an awesome way to spend my time, time with these characters who I came to love and who felt like family to me.

I loved the growth that Shelby and Kate went through to get to their 'better' place. All of the characters grew in their life experiences and were wonderful to be around. Psst, some need a little more work, maybe? But overall, I'm sad to see them all go. Hopefully they will show up in future books. Wink, wink, Ashley. As with all of Ashley's stories, this place feels like home and the characters became my family and friends.

One of the most fun characters is Blossom. She appears in people's lives, just when they need her. Such a wise woman (or angel?). Anyway, she is going to be getting her own spin-off series and I can't wait! I am excited to see what adventures Ashley has in store for her.

I love this series and highly recommend it for a little bit of escape reading. Grab your drink of choice, your snugly blanket, and settle in for a wonderful time!

I received a copy of Southern Simmer from the author and this is my honest opinion.

Book Blitz! Eternal Ashes by Janelle Marie ~ Excerpt and #Giveaway! #EternalAshes #XpressoTours

Eternal Ashes by Janelle Marie
(Ash & Rage, #1)
Publication date: January 21st 2025
Genres: Adult, Thriller

One night. One moment. One mistake. Now life will never be the same.

In her hometown of Auburn Village, Sofie Collins has built a good life for herself and her teenage daughter, April.

Sofie’s business is growing, and they are both happily in love, with April about to graduate from high school in only a few weeks.

Life – although far from perfect – is good. But one moment is all it takes.

Just one moment and now Sofie’s world will never be the same again.

Instead of building a brighter future with each passing day, Sofie suddenly finds the happiness she found slipping further and further through her fingers.

And it seems as though all the blame and guilt lies with her…

Or does it?

This mesmerizing drama is the compelling first chapter of a story of heartbreak, betrayal and cold revenge. When her world breaks, will Sofie find the strength to rebuild the pieces? Or is she about to send it crashing down?

Goodreads | Amazon

*******************************

EXCERPT

Sofie stared out the window of Chief Edison’s unmarked police car, a cold sense of dread spreading through her chest as she awaited her daughter’s fate. The local hospital wasn’t far, but the ride felt like it was hours. They had left immediately after throwing on some clothes. Sofie wasn’t sure what she had grabbed, or if she should bring anything for April. What had happened? What could’ve possibly happened? Why hadn’t she come home?

The night was still and silent. Everything was so quiet and peaceful, in such stark contrast to the turmoil raging through Sofie’s whole body.

Please, let my baby girl be okay. The thought repeated itself in her head, right along with the last image she had of April walking hand-in-hand out of the pub with Drew. April’s last words to Sofie had been “I love you.” But Sofie couldn’t remember if she’d said those all-important words back to her.

Sofie’s breath clutched in her chest, her gasp disturbing the silence inside the car. Chief Edison glanced back at her through the rearview mirror, concern in his eyes despite his blank expression. Beside her, Parker took Sofie’s hand, interlocking their fingers.

Chief Edison hadn’t given them many details beyond the fact April and Drew had been in an accident. He’d shared no insight into their condition. He didn’t need to though. Sofie could read between the lines. If the kids were okay, they would have been driven home.

April would have called.

If the kids were okay, Chief Edison would have said so instead of staying tight-lipped. His silence was a red flag. A bad omen.

Please, let my baby girl be okay…

Sofie’s vision blurred and she blinked back tears, refusing to let any fall yet. She was convinced crying prematurely would only bring bad luck. Sofie was fearing the worst, but she needed to hold on to some kind of hope. At least now, before she knew for certain how bad it was.

Maybe the kids were banged up and in shock. Maybe there were some broken bones. Maybe some concussions. Scrapes and scratches. Bruises. A bunch of stuff would heal quickly…

And maybe one day, a few weeks or months from now, they would remember this incident as a scary close-call they’d overcome. A minor setback.

Someday in the future, April and Drew would be married and in their forties, telling their kids about the bad crash they had weeks before graduating high school. Their yearbook would have pictures of all the signatures they’d gotten on their matching casts.

There was no need to panic.

No need to panic. Sofie let these words replace the chant in her head, wanting so badly to believe them. Yet, no matter how hard she tried to cling to some optimism, the prolonged drive provided ample time for dread to take hold again.

Release Day! The Business Trip by Jessie Garcia ~ My Thoughts #TheBusinessTrip #JessieGarcia @stmartinspress.bsky.social

Happy Release Day!

Congratulations Jessie
on the release today of
The Business Trip!

The Business Trip by Jessie Garcia
Mystery, Thriller & Suspense, 352 pages
Published January 14, 2025 by St. Martin's Press

The Business Trip is the gripping, page-turning debut from author Jessie Garcia.

Stephanie and Jasmine have nothing and everything in common. The two women don’t know each other but are on the same plane. Stephanie is on a business trip and Jasmine is fleeing an abusive relationship. After a few days, they text their friends the same exact messages about the same man—the messages becoming stranger and more erratic.

And then the two women vanish. The texts go silent, the red flags go up, and the panic sets in. When Stephanie and Jasmine are each declared missing and in danger, it begs the questions: Who is Trent McCarthy? What did he do to these women— or what did they do to him?

Twist upon twist, layer upon layer, where nothing is as it seems, The Business Trip takes you on a descent into the depths of a mastermind manipulator. But who is playing who?

My thoughts about The Business Trip ~~

(I love to note the first lines of the books I'm reading. First lines can really grab a reader's attention and I love seeing where the author takes the reader after their first lines.)

First lines—"The Day of the Flight. I had to move carefully, quietly, grabbing only what I could take in the dark without waking Glenn. He snorted and rolled to his side, and I froze, hand in midair above the suitcase, ready to abort the mission and slip back under the covers if needed."

OMG! This book grabbed me from the very first paragraph. It started off intense and just kept going. This is a very well written, twisty tale that I found myself totally immersed in. I was completely baffled about who did what and was puzzled as I tried to figure out what the heck was going on.

It is astounding to me that this is a debut novel and I can't wait to see what else this author writes. She has definitely gained a fan in me with this book. This is a five star read for me and I highly recommend it if you love twisty thrillers!

I received an ARC of The Business Trip and this is my honest opinion of the book.

Book Blitz! A Guide to Fake Dating Your Enemy by Nikki Bright ~ Excerpt & #Giveaway! @XpressoTours #AGuideToFakeDatingYourEnemy

A Guide to Fake Dating Your Enemy by Nikki Bright
Publication date: January 9th 2025
Genres: Adult, Comedy, Contemporary, Romance

Samuel Warner is rich, charming, the CEO of his family’s business, and the guy I’ve hated since grade school. Now, thanks to one of my more questionable ideas, he’s also my new pretend boyfriend.

Our families have been at each other’s throats for three generations, fighting over the future of our small town. The Warners are all for bulldozing and modernizing every corner of Fox Creek, while my family is determined to preserve our quirky little town and its quaint ways. But even without the family feud, Samuel’s charm and charisma (and his maddening smirk) would still get on my nerves.

Samuel is insufferably smooth, his favorite hobby is teasing me even though he’s able to charm the most cantankerous granny in the county, and he’s spine-tinglingly handsome. Worse yet, he knows it!

But when my brother falls head over heels for a Warner girl, I’m desperate to find a way to unite our families. So, I propose a totally sane, not-at-all-ridiculous plan: Samuel and I will pretend to be in a serious relationship, faking our way to family peace and town harmony with a Romeo-and-Juliet-style performance (minus the tragedy at the end).

First problem with this fantastic idea? Samuel agrees way too quickly, which screams that he’s got a hidden agenda. And yet, he’s so perfect in the role of doting boyfriend, I can’t figure out what his angle is.

Second problem? This relationship might be fake, but my heart didn’t get the memo. Every “date” and impromptu public display of affection Samuel insists on performing stirs up feelings I’m not prepared for. Soon enough, I’m wondering if I can really end this without a total family feud—or losing my heart.

A Guide to Fake Dating Your Enemy is a laugh-out-loud small-town romantic comedy full of swoon-worthy moments, sizzling kisses, and a romance that’s anything but fake. It’s a closed door romance with mild swearing/language.

EXCERPT

I inhaled the steam from my latte for courage. “You’re right.”

I braced myself for a smug response.

Samuel—who was in the middle of sipping his Americano—set his drink down and immediately moved on, pushing the plan ahead with a suspicious amount of eagerness. “Good. Then, since we’ve been a couple for months, we’ll need to adopt some habits long-term couples have, like pet names. Naturally, we’ll also need to be physically expressive.”

“For nicknames we can just call each other Nat and Sam, since that’s what our families call us,” I said.

Samuel idly tapped his phone screen. “You know my family calls me Sam?”

“Of course I do,” I said, a little irritated. “We might not get along, but I’ve seen you almost every week of my life.”

“True.” Samuel gave me a more thoughtful look that made me shift in my comfy seat. “I guess I just didn’t expect you to pay attention to details about me.”

“Oh,” I said.

I suppose since the two of us rarely did anything besides bicker, I’d never given him a reason to believe I saw him as anything more than a picture I tacked to a dartboard to take out my aggression on.

“Alright, so we’ve got our pet names down,” Samuel said. “Now to address the physical aspect of our relationship.”

“Yeah. About that.” I took another sip of my latte, then set it back down on the coffee table. “We’ll have to stick to hugs and occasional hand-holding.”

“What?” Samuel sat on the edge of his love seat. “What kind of serious couple only hugs and holds hands? We should at least be prepared for short kisses.”

“Kisses?” I cackled. “I don’t think I could believably kiss you without looking like I want to wipe that smug smile off your handsome face.”

Samuel playfully tilted his head. “I’m flattered you think I’m handsome, Nat. Don’t worry—I promise not to let it go to my head.”

“Focus, Samuel. Focus,” I said.

Samuel relaxed and once again leaned back against the couch. “Of course, you want to stick to business. Fine, we can start with hugs and hand-holding.”

“Occasional hand-holding,” I corrected.

“If either one of us thinks our act isn’t convincing enough, we’ll revisit the physical touch aspect.” Samuel typed out his notes on his cell phone. “Does that make you happy?”

“Yes,” I reluctantly agreed. “We’ll probably have to adjust as we go anyway. Could you email me your notes?”

“I’ll do you one better and text them,” he said. “What’s your number?”

I internally weighed the pros and cons of giving him my number. Knowing Samuel, he’d start texting me in the middle of the night, asking me what the process was to submit construction permits, just to be annoying.

“Nat, darling, honey,” Samuel cooed. “What kind of serious boyfriend would I be if I didn’t have your number?”

Oh yeah. He was definitely going to send me annoying text messages.

About the author

Hi, I’m Nikki Bright! In my experience life can be tough, so I write laugh out loud romantic comedies in the hope that they will bring some joy to your day.

My books are closed door (which is also called sweet romance by some readers) but with plenty of the romantic zing you love, and lots of chemistry between the main characters. (That means there’s no spice or steamy times.)

In my stories you’ll find lots of banter, happily ever afters, and loads of quirky side characters who all live in the small, fictitious Wisconsin town of Fox Creek—a city so cute and quaint you’ll wish you could move there!

I’m an indie author, which means I handle everything involving bringing my books to life on my own. Thankfully, I have an amazing assistant who helps me out and runs my social media accounts, answers email, and keeps the website up to date!

Currently I’m hiding in my writing cave hard at work on the next book and focusing on writing more stories about couples you’ll love and laugh with. But I still love connecting with readers through my author newsletter, so if you’d like to hear directly from me (or if you’d like to read extra epilogues for any of my books) please sign up to receive my newsletter!
