My thoughts about Chance Romance ~~

First lines—"'I'm going to castrate him,' Kendra fumes, hanging up the phone and balling her hands into a fist."

Oh man, there is so much to love about Lisa Becker's new book, Chance Romance. I loved the premise—a group of friends coming together for a fun-filled summer weekend giveaway! It was great reading about all the fun activities they had planned. I loved the mix of characters and the way they all meshed—for the most part. I loved watching opposites attract, with chemistry that wouldn't quit and with just the right amount of heat. 

The first scene takes place in a bookstore, so that really grabbed my attention. As a reader and booklover, I loved it! How could you not? And the main character is a writer, so that was another win-win for me. I loved that we got an inside look at some of the writer's angst that goes into creating a story. 

Jackie and Logan (loved them both!) are thrown together for the weekend with this group of friends, both of them sort of feeling like fifth wheels, not sure why they agreed to go along. Well, could two people be more different? And why do they both feel this crazy attraction to each other, kind of like a love-hate thing? Sparks are gonna fly!

It was so much fun watching these two struggle with their beliefs and emotions, as they tried to understand what exactly was drawing them together. When it was all said and done, when I got to the end of the story, I honestly had a smile on my face. And possibly a tear or two! That's how emotionally invested I was in these two people. 

I absolutely loved this story and can't stop thinking about it and the interesting lives of Jackie and Logan. You really need to put Chance Romance on your summer TBR list.... now!

Prologue

Those catlike green eyes. That long, silky brown hair, flowing over her right shoulder from underneath a pink beanie. A radiant smile of straight, gleaming white teeth, lined up perfectly, sinking into a juicy magenta lip.

Ryan Carlson looked up after offering his seat to an elderly passenger and knew his life had changed forever. Leaning against a pole several feet in front of him on the crowded 1 train to Times Square stood the most exquisite woman he had ever seen. And, for just a brief beat, she was looking right at him, too.

In a moment, as quick and powerful as a strike of lightning, he knew he had to meet her. Yeah, right, approach a total stranger on the subway. He had no doubt he’d come off looking like a weirdo or a stalker, as there was certainly no shortage of those in New York City. He knew he was neither. Just a regular guy, a decent guy, looking for the right girl.

He took a moment to study her further. There was no engagement ring or wedding band on her finger, although she did wear a wide silver thumb ring. She was dressed in a pair of black workout pants, a gray sweater and that pink beanie.

She probably had a boyfriend. One look at her, and it was hard for him to imagine someone wasn’t already lucky enough to be with her. He’d been on the receiving end of betrayal and wouldn’t put someone else through that kind of hell. Men probably approached her all the time. But maybe she was single.

His mouth went dry as he tried to think of what he would say. He honestly didn’t know. It wasn’t like this situation had come up before. All he knew was he was determined to meet her. Maybe it was his fate to meet her. Yes. It’s fate. He was convinced of it.

His heart raced as he took a deep, calming breath. With sweaty palms, he grabbed the pole next to him and pushed forward while he considered his next move. As he got closer to the woman, he could hear her singing to herself under her breath, and her charming accent caused his stomach to clench in the most amazing way.

“Fifty-Ninth Street–Columbus Circle,” the conductor droned over the loudspeaker as the subway car rattled and whistled. The lights flickered, and when they came back on, the woman was no longer clinging to her pole. With rising panic, Ryan surveyed the car. She had managed to move toward the door just as the train pulled into the station. Ryan tried to keep an eye on the pink hat as passengers pushed to get off.

A large man with a bad comb over, dressed in a tattered brown suit and scuffed shoes, blocked Ryan’s way. Not wanting to be rude, Ryan gently shifted the shabby businessman aside. “Excuse me, getting off,” he muttered.

Ryan stepped off the train and stood on the subway platform, two exits before his intended stop, stretching onto his toes to look left and right, seeking out the pink beanie. He jumped up a few times, trying to see over the hordes of people exiting and entering the train.

“Watch it, asshole,” a woman carrying two reusable shopping bags said as she pushed her way past him.

“Pardon me, ma’am,” he responded. With each passing second, his mystery girl was getting farther and farther away. Knowing he had a fifty-fifty chance, Ryan turned left and traversed the packed underground tunnel, seeking her out. He walked back and forth, peering up and down staircases and escalators to no avail.

She was gone.

This was such a fun story to read with just the right amount of romance thrown in. I completely devoured it!

Ryan sees the girl of his dreams getting off the subway. He loses sight of her but a web producer comes up with a plan to help him find her. He can't wait to meet the love of his life. But Angie doesn't believe in true love and is only interested in her show's ratings. So much is riding on the success of this show.  

Well, let me tell you, the clashes and chemistry between these two make for a roller-coaster ride of emotions and drama. It was so entertaining to watch the romantic and the cynic battle it out. And oh my gosh, there were parts that had me laughing out loud. That Angie, she's a little spitfire! 

I loved The Subway Girl! I've read all of Lisa's books and I'm always excited to read her latest one because I know it's going to be an amazing journey. This one did not disappoint. Check it out!

I read and reviewed Starfish when it came out. I loved it and loved the sauciness of the characters. Dear Future Self is a wonderful novella focusing on one of the characters we met in Starfish.

Jase is an singer, one who is doing really well out there in the public world. But when he hears some bad news from his private world, he takes a step back from the public to focus on what he feels is more important.

Once again, Lisa has written an amazingly fun story with characters I would love to know. I love this series and really hope there are more stories to come. I enjoy my immersion into their world.

OMG! Starfish is an amazing, fun, hot story that will keep you turning the pages until the very end!

Marin's internship is not at all what she was wanting to land but she gives it her all, because that's just the way she does things. Her travels on the road, promoting a rock band, has her experiencing a completely different kind of life from what she's used to. The chemistry between Marin and Brad is steamy hot right from the start but she has a policy of not getting involved with co-workers, let alone employers. Yeah, right. How'd that work for you, Marin?

I seriously loved this story and enjoyed watching the relationship between Marin and Brad grow as they figured out their feelings for each other—and then acted on them. Hot, hot, hot! Lisa has created another delightful, engrossing tale that will sweep you off your feet. You really need to add Starfish to your summer reading list!

I read and reviewed Links when it first came out in August 2017. I loved it and I'm so excited to announce the re-release of this fun and fabulous book with a stunning new cover. Isn't it just amazing?

First line—"Charlotte Windham did a quick check of her teeth in the small compact mirror hanging from her key ring before knocking on the oversized wooden door. She undoubtedly had some remnants from lunch trapped within the metal wires of her braces."

Once again, Lisa has written an engaging story that we can all probably relate to in some way. Charlotte is a young girl, a very plain girl, who has a major crush on a very cute boy in high school. And.... she's his tutor. Now that's challenging, to be that close to the guy you dream about and he doesn't even know you are alive, in that kind of way, anyway. Haven't we all been there at some point in our lives?

Fifteen years pass and their lives cross again. Charlotte is a successful writer now and is still attracted to Garrett. But can they get past the way things were in high school? And can Charlotte trust Garrett to not break her heart and leave her when he is ready to move on? I immediately loved Charlotte and was rooting for her as she puts Garrett in his place for the way he treated her in high school. She grew up to become a strong, beautiful woman who deserves to be treated right.

Links is a fun, delightful story that I devoured on my vacation. It is the perfect get-away book that leaves you with a good feeling. Thank you, Lisa, for another very entertaining story!

Mimi Johnson was casually dressed in a brightly-colored blouse with enormous turquoise jewelry and equally-oversized glasses. Despite that largesse, the only thing truly bigger than her personality (and her bosom) was her handbag. Always perfectly matched to her clothing, shoes, and jewelry, she was like a walking Chico’s advertisement, if you added forty years, forty pounds, and a Virginia Slims cigarette. From her Mary Poppins-like bag, she pulled out a box, impeccably-wrapped in glossy pink paper with a white grosgrain ribbon bow. A cigarette teetered between her two fingers while she produced a lung-hacking cough.

“Open it… …sweetie. Open it,” she said to her seven-year-old great niece, Caroline, a beautiful and vibrant girl with long blonde hair and oversized blue eyes.

Alive with anticipation, sweet young Caroline eagerly took the box and smiled up at Mimi. She gingerly removed the ribbon, planning to save it for later. The glossy paper was of less interest and she ripped through it quickly. She opened the box and gently lifted out a hot pink purse, adorned with pale pink flowers and rhinestones. An enormous smile overcame her. Caroline nearly set her own hair on fire from Mimi’s cigarette as she bounded into her aunt’s arms.

“Oh, thank you, Aunt Mimi. It’s lovely.”

And that was when Caroline’s love of handbags began. From big and loud ones that would make Mimi proud to unimposing wristlets, from bowler bags to satchels; it didn’t matter if they were made of canvas or calf-skin leather, were distressed or embellished with metal studs. Hell, she didn’t care if you called them pocketbooks or purses. She just loved them all – almost as much as she loved Mimi.

By the time she was a junior in high school and well on her way to being class valedictorian, it was the hundreds of bags Caroline owned that helped her conceptualize her ticket out of her suffocating small Georgian town. She would design handbags. And it was Mimi who was her steadfast cheerleader.

“Caroline, sweetie… …you find something you love and you just hold onto it.” It had never mattered if Caroline was asking Mimi’s advice about a friend, lover, or career. The advice was always the same: “Find something you love and hold onto it.”

Mimi’s words ever-present in her mind, Caroline headed to the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising and spent four years in Los Angeles learning everything there was to know to pursue her passion. Then, right out of college, she spent three years working in the design and marketing departments of two of the world’s leading, high-end handbag designers.

She was schooled in beauty and how to accessorize the perfectly-coiffed women on the way to their Botox appointments. But Caroline was pulled by the nagging feeling that the very person who had inspired her career, Mimi, could never afford the bags she designed, even if Caroline used her generous employee discount on Mimi’s behalf. And God forbid Mimi would ever accept one as a gift, always preferring to give rather than receive. But Caroline believed there was no reason for anyone to be denied the ultimate in accessories. She saw an untapped market of designing beautiful and affordable bags, but she just wasn’t sure she was start-up potential. Again, it was Mimi who nudged her to learn the business side of things and apply to MBA programs. When Caroline was accepted to Harvard Business School, Mimi, of course, encouraged her.

“You’ve got this, sweetie. ,” she said. “It’s in the bag.”

Caroline was sitting in Financial Reporting and Control on her first day of Harvard classes (and yes, the class turned out to be as boring as it sounded). That’s when she first eyed Mike, who was wearing a faded pair of Levi jeans, a washed-out vintage Rolling Stones T-shirt, and Converse sneakers. He oozed charisma. Turning her head away from him and back toward the front of the lecture hall, Caroline thought that if he were a handbag, he would be a grey leather tote – confident and dependable, but not trying too hard.

Mike surveyed the large lecture hall as he walked in, a Starbucks coffee cup in each hand. After descending the steps slowly, he took a seat next to Caroline and planted one of the white and green cups on her desk.

Flashing a wide, dimpled smile, which she mused he reserved for getting girls to drop their panties, he said, “Here. You look like you’re going to need this.”

“Thanks,” she replied in a suspicious tone, turning her head sideways to look at him and raising an eyebrow.

“I’m Mike,” he said, again flashing a smile and reaching out for a handshake.

“I’m Caroline. Thanks for the…”

“Latte.”

“Latte,” she confirmed. “Thanks. But just so you know, I’m not gonna sleep with you,” she said in an apparent attempt to establish up front she wasn’t taken in by his obvious charm.

“I know,” he replied matter-of-fact.

Before she could respond, Professor Beauregard, a stout man with excessive eyebrows, spoke up. “Please take note of where you are seated. I will send around a seating chart for you to mark your spot. This will be your seat for the remainder of the semester.”

“Looks like we’ll be seatmates,” Mike said, grinning at her.

“Looks like it.”

My thoughts about Clutch ~~

(I love to note the first lines of the books I'm reading. First lines can really grab a reader's attention and I love seeing where the author takes the reader after their first lines.)

First line—"Mimi Johnson was casually dressed in a brightly-colored blouse with enormous turquoise jewelry and equally-oversized glasses. Despite that largesse, the only thing truly bigger than her personality (and her bosom) was her handbag."

I read this story when it first came out and I loved it. What fun to compare guys to different types of handbags. Now Lisa has re-released this absolutely delightful story with an amazing new cover (isn't it just so beautiful and cute?) and she's also added five new bags, I mean chapters. So that's even more wonderfulness!

I totally became wrapped up in Caroline's life again and loved that she (and we) get to meet even more men. I love how each man is categorized as a type of handbag and I loved to see how their personality fit that description.

This is what I posted when I read this story in 2015.

What a fun story! Caroline wants to find the perfect man and she puts herself out there in the dating world trying to find him. She is a successful business woman with her own purse design company. It shouldn't be this hard to find a good man.

I love how each of the men she dates are compared to a certain type of handbag, pocketbook, purse -- whatever you want to call it, that thing we women carry around all the time. Take a look at the trailer below and you'll see what I mean. It is ingenious the way the men all fit into a category of bag.

Caroline's aunt Mimi was a great character and a wise woman. She told Caroline very early in her life, "Find something you love and hold onto it." Caroline remembers this throughout her life; when it comes to finding her career and as well as finding her man.

Clutch is a wonderful, entertaining look at the dating world and I can guarantee that you will start thinking about what category of bag the guys you meet would fall into after reading this book. What fun! Thanks for another great read, Lisa!

Excerpt

As I race to the restaurant, I scowl knowing Mom’s going to have my head. Actually, she’s probably used to it by now. I’m surprised they don’t give me fake arrival times knowing I’m always ten minutes behind.

I rush through the revolving door of the restaurant, through the bar, and smack into a woman. She brushes against my bum shoulder and the pain burns right through me. Minding the manners Mom hammered into me from a young age, I mutter, “Sorry,” when I’m honestly not. I look down and notice something familiar about her.

“Hi, Garrett,” she says, sharing a small smile. “It’s been a long time. How are you?”

“Um. I’m fine.” My brows furrow as I wrack my brain trying to figure out who the hell this woman is. She’s short, about five two and roughly my age. I glance down and notice full, round breasts, slightly wide hips and thick thighs. Not my usual type, so I’m pretty sure I haven’t slept with her. At least I don’t have to worry about that embarrassing scene. She’s got chocolate brown eyes, looking at me with warmth. “And…how are you?” Shaking my head I am still trying to place her.

“I’m doing well,” she replies, her smile growing.

“I’m glad to hear that,” I say, trying to be polite and end this awkward reunion that clearly has me clueless.

“Well…I guess I should go.” She turns back and waves to a woman sitting in a far booth of the restaurant. On further inspection, she’s waved to Lindsay, my sister, who of course made it to our family lunch on time. Seated with her are my parents, with Mom frowning at me and shaking her head. Like she didn’t expect I would be late. Marcus isn’t here yet either. Guess the twin thing really does run deep.

“You know Lindsay?” I ask her.

“Uh, yeah,” she says, with a small chuckle and a noticeable hint of sarcasm.

“My parents?”

“Of course,” she says, shaking her head slightly like it’s hitting her I have no damn clue who she is. Then she confirms my suspicions and just lays it on the line. “You don’t know who I am, do you?” Her eyes are alight with humor.

“Umm. I’m afraid you have me at a disadvantage,” I splutter, rubbing my hand behind my neck—my tell—before flashing her my most charming, dimpled smile. Before she can respond, a lady in her mid-sixties with salt and pepper hair wearing an outfit appropriate for someone twenty years younger—but this is LA after all—walks over.

“Pardon the interruption,” she begins. “I would just be kicking myself if I got home and didn’t take advantage of telling you what a big fan I am.”

“Oh, thank you,” I say, turning on the faux charm I reserve for situations such as this.

“My husband and I loved your book.” The lady turns fully toward this mystery woman. “I wish I had it with me for you to sign. Maybe I could get your autograph on something else?” I cock my head to the side and watch Mystery Woman. She turns back toward the elderly lady and smiles sincerely.

“Sure. I’d be happy to sign something.”

The lady reaches into her oversized zebra-print bag and produces a pen and small notepad. She hands them to Mystery Woman and turns to me, smiling.

“Who should I make this out to?” asks Mystery Woman.

“Donna and Frank. Your dear friends, Donna and Frank.”

“My…dear…friends…Donna…and…Frank,” Mystery Woman murmurs aloud as she writes a note. Watching her autograph the note, I can’t help the grin spreading across my face. Once she finishes, Donna reads through the note, her eyes widening with delight.

“Thank you, Charley,” she says.

“My pleasure,” replies Charley—Charley?—who looks tickled.

“Charley?” I say, racking my brain to no avail.

“Yes,” replies Donna with pride. “You are standing with the brilliant novelist Charley Windham.” She turns back to Charley before walking away. “Thank you again, dear.”

“Charley Windham?”

“Uh-huh,” responds Charley, giving me a look like I should piece it together.

“Charley Windham. Why does that name sound so familiar?” I rub my hand on the back of my neck while Charley looks at me with amusement. “Wait, you’re Charley Windham. Who wrote The Crossing Guard?” Charley shakes her head and laughs.

“That’s me.” Charley giggles, unable to control the wide smile spreading across her face.

“Yes. Now I know. I read your book. In fact, everyone on the tour read it. You couldn’t walk around a locker room or airport terminal without seeing someone with it in their hands.”

“That’s nice to hear.” She grins at me with her head tilted and nodding her head slightly up and down, giving me the impression she’s waiting for me to say more.

“That explains who you are, and I get you would know who I am, but how do you know my family?”

“That is the question of the moment, isn’t it?” she says, smiling smugly.

“You’re enjoying this, aren’t you?”

“Immensely.” She is grinning unabashedly.

My thoughts about Links ~~

(I love to note the first lines of the books I'm reading. First lines can really grab a reader's attention and I love seeing where the author takes the reader after their first line.)

First line—"Charlotte Windham did a quick check of her teeth in the small compact mirror hanging from her key ring before knocking on the oversized wooden door. She undoubtedly had some remnants from lunch trapped within the metal wires of her braces."

Once again, Lisa has written an engaging story that we can all probably relate to in some way. Charlotte is a young girl, a very plain girl, who has a major crush on a very cute boy in high school. And.... she's his tutor. Now that's challenging, to be that close to the guy you dream about and he doesn't even know you are alive, in that kind of way, anyway. Haven't we all been there at some point in our lives?

Fifteen years pass and their lives cross again. Charlotte is a successful writer now and is still attracted to Garrett. But can they get past the way things were in high school? And can Charlotte trust Garrett to not break her heart and leave her when he is ready to move on? I immediately loved Charlotte and was rooting for her as she puts Garrett in his place for the way he treated her in high school. She grew up to become a strong, beautiful woman who deserves to be treated right.

Links is a fun, delightful story that I devoured on my vacation. It is the perfect get-away book that leaves you with a good feeling. Thank you, Lisa, for another very entertaining story!

Tell us about your newest release.

A light-hearted, second chance romance, Links explores what happens when nerdy girl Charlotte Windham reconnects with her unrequited schoolgirl crush, star athlete Garrett Stephens, 15 years after high school.

Did you have an unrequited crush in high school?

I'm not too ashamed to admit I had such a fierce crush on a boy, I willingly sat with him in the bathroom at parties while he puked up wine coolers, just so I could spend time with him. Thankfully, that soul-crushing time in my life in over, but I couldn't help but wonder what would happen if I came upon that secret crush today as a confident, successful woman.

Can you tell us more about the main character(s)?

Charlotte Windham was a typical ugly duckling in high school -- glasses and all. Highly intelligent and immensely talented, she's become a breakout success with her best-selling novel, The Crossing Guard. In school, she harbored an unrequited crush on Garrett Stephens, the teen heartthrob and star athlete who's gone on to become a professional golfer suffering a possible career-ending injury. The book explores what happens when these two former classmates have a chance encounter in a Los Angeles restaurant, 15 years after high school. With the upper hand, can Charlotte forgive Garrett for his past ways, and for his more recent Don Juan lifestyle? Will she even want to? And, can Garrett change his ways for a second chance with Charlotte, who may just be the perfect fit for him?

Imagine Links would be turned into a movie, who would you cast for the main characters?

I would love to see someone with the emotional range and depth of Maggie Gyllenhaal to play Charlotte. I think she could make her come across as vulnerable, successful, intelligent and passionate. For Garrett, we would need someone who is classically handsome and oozes charm. Matt Bomer, who pulled that off perfectly on White Collar comes to mind. If he's not available, let's just say, I would love to be at the casting call for that role.

You have also published other books, can you tell us more about them?

I'm most known for the Click trilogy comprised of Click: An Online Love Story, Double Click and Right Click. The series follows a young woman's search for love online in Los Angeles with the entire series unfolding in emails between our heroine, her friends and her hilarious dates. Fraught with BCC's, FWD's and inadvertent Reply to All's, readers will cheer, laugh, cry and cringe following the email exploits of Renee and friends. And ultimately, they will root for Renee to "click" with the right man.

What do you have in the works?

I've just wrapped up a contemporary romance called Starfish, which examines the unlikely relationship between a regular girl and a touring guitarist in a band. When it comes to romance, you just can't pass up the idea of falling in love with a rock star.
