Release Day! So Transparent by Mallory Pierce ~ My Thoughts & an Excerpt! #SoTransparent

Happy Release Day!

Congratulations Mallory
on the release today of
So Transparent!

So Transparent by Mallory Pierce
Paranormal Cozy Mystery, 290 pages
Published October 27, 2025

Wedding bells are ringing in Woebrook, which is cause for celebration…until the Grim Reaper crashes the party.

The town’s resident celebrity, horror writer Nolan Drake, brings his ghostly housemate, Gwen, to the nuptials, and she’s excited to attend her first Frink family function in over a century. Too bad everything that can go wrong before the ceremony does, and all the snafus and drama culminate in wedding planner Natalie Doyle’s body being found face down in a pile of cake.

As Nolan (and in no small part Gwen) helped the police solve two recent murders, he’s recruited by the WPD’s cockiest cop to participate in a “bro-vestigation.” The men, and their tag-along spirit, soon learn that Natalie’s personal and professional lives were very complicated and messy. In the days leading to her demise, she was cheated on, stolen from, manhandled, sabotaged, and verbally accosted in public twice!

With a host of suspects lying through their teeth and pointing fingers at each other, this might be Nolan and Gwen’s toughest case yet. At least, it’s not ice-cold like Gwen’s own unsolved murder, which continues to haunt her. Will the discovery of a clue from the past finally set her on the path to putting that mystery to rest?

If you enjoy sassy sleuths and supernatural shenanigans, you won’t want to miss So Transparent! It’s similar in tone and content to the works of Paranormal Cozy Mystery authors Angie Fox, Danielle Garrett, and Amy Boyles.

My thoughts about So Transparent ~~

(I love to note the first lines of the books I'm reading. First lines can really grab a reader's attention and I love seeing where the author takes the reader after their first line.)

First lines—"Lying in a supine position atop an exam table with an elastic strap wrapped around the base of his skull, Nolan looked as though he was being subjected to some form of medieval torture."

This series is so much fun and So Transparent is book three of the series, so there's a lot of paranormal fun to be had.

Nolan and Gwen work together to solve murders with Nolan working directly with the police to solve the cases. Gwen feeds him a lot of useful information that she is able to discover using her ghostly powers. I love their relationship and how they feed off of each other to solve the case. I am constantly chuckling at their antics.

Natalie, the wedding planner, isn't having a very good day. All of the plans for this beautiful wedding are falling apart, due to no fault of her own—someone is out to get her. And then when she is found face down in the wedding cake, things definitely aren't going her way. But then that's when the fun begins, with Nolan and Gwen on the case, discovering who dunnit.

Along with the murder cases that they always find themselves in the midst of, they are also trying to uncover the truth of Gwen's demise. That is an ongoing case and I am totally invested in learning the truth about that.

I highly recommend So Transparent and it's the perfect Halloween read for right now! I devoured it and I look forward to more antics and crime-solving from Gwen and Nolan. Check it out!

I received an ARC of So Transparent and this is my honest opinion.

Marcus retreated inside the townhouse and was about to shut the big, black door in the other men’s faces when I shouted, “Wait! We don’t know his whereabouts at the time of Natalie’s death!”

Nolan’s hand jutted out to stop the door from shutting. “Where were you between four forty-five and five forty-five this afternoon?”

Marcus poked his tousled head through the crack between the door and its frame. “Is this book writer seriously asking me for an alibi?” he posed the question to Warmond, and yes, he put a disdainful emphasis on the word ‘book’, which conveyed his lack of appreciation for that art form.

“If you have one, we could cross you off the suspect list,” the police officer said with a hopeful lilt in his voice.

Marcus glowered. “I went for a run to burn off some steam after getting that text about the baby from Nat.”

Smiling with relief, Warmond turned to Nolan and said, “Did you hear that? He went for a run, which makes perfect sense because athletes have to stay in shape.”

Warmond might have been satisfied by Marcus’s response, but I wasn’t. “As far as alibis go, that’s a very vague one. Try and extract more details from him.”

“Where did you go for this run?” Nolan inquired.

“There’s a sweet running path down by the river,” Warmond noted with a glance back at the darkened water.

“He’s feeding the man answers!” I exclaimed with dismay.

“Yeah, that’s where I like to run,” Marcus said.

“He’s still being vague. You need to pin him down!” I urged Nolan.

“How many miles did you run this afternoon?” he asked our suspect.

“Not sure,” was his noncommittal response.

“Your Garmin” —Nolan gestured at the large-faced black watch strapped to Marcus’s left wrist— “should have that information, and its GPS would have logged your location at the time of Natalie’s death.”

“Good thinking!” Warmond gave Nolan an Attaboy! slug to the arm before telling Marcus, “I can confirm your alibi by checking the data on your Garmin.” He reached out his hand, clearly expecting his friend to turn over the watch.

“I didn’t have it on earlier,” Marcus claimed, then crossed his arms over his chest in a defiant stance.

“So, you went for a run without your running watch, but you’re wearing it now just to lounge around the house?” Nolan’s disbelief, which I shared, was evident in his tone.

“I’m done answering questions. If the police” —he looked pointedly at Warmond “want to ask me anything else, they can contact my lawyer.” And with that proclamation, Marcus slammed the door shut, leaving Warmond and Nolan to stare at it in dumbfounded shock.

“You know what one of the best things about being a ghost is?” I asked Nolan, who turned to me with a raised eyebrow.

“I can enter a home and look around without a search warrant,” I said with a smirk, then walked right through the closed door.

So, it makes perfect sense that she spends her days writing stories about a plucky, crime-solving ghost.

Despite having visited haunted houses from San Jose to Savannah, Mallory has yet to have a close encounter with anyone from the Great Beyond and that’s probably for the best because she’s sort of a wimp. Shhhhh, don’t tell anyone.

Gwen has a new lease on her afterlife, but Nolan's past threatens to ruin everything.

Several months after catching a murderer together, spirited ghost Gwen and moody horror writer Nolan have settled into their unusual living arrangement, and all seems to be going well until...

Karissa Jones, the woman who broke Nolan’s heart, shows up on his and Gwen’s doorstep, and the duo’s friendship is put to the test. Gwen questions the self-absorbed influencer’s motives for wanting to reconnect with Nolan, but he trusts his ex-girlfriend implicitly and won’t hear a word said against her.

When Karissa is discovered with the bloodied corpse of bad boy rocker Scorch, whom she recently dumped and wished dead on social media, she is suspect number one. Nolan wants to clear her name by tracking down the real culprit, but Gwen isn’t convinced of Karissa’s innocence.

Despite being at odds, Nolan and Gwen team up once again to pursue leads and sift through clues. Unfortunately, there’s a long list of people who wanted the mercurial musician dead. Will they be able to crack the case before Karissa is sentenced to life in an orange jumpsuit?

My thoughts about Ghost With the Most ~~

(I love to note the first lines of the books I'm reading. First lines can really grab a reader's attention and I love seeing where the author takes the reader after their first line.)

First lines—"'No.' A word I'd grown accustomed to hearing from Nolan Drake, the bespectacled and bewhiskered man who owned the Victorian house in the charming town of Woebrook, New York that I'd been inhabiting for almost 133 years."

Oh my gosh, I love this series so much! I love Gwen and Nolan and their quirky, entertaining relationship. Honestly I enjoy their repartee so much that I can't help but smile and chuckle through the whole story. The two of them crack me up!

Gwen and Nolan always find themselves in the middle of a murder and involve themselves to figure out who the murderer is. And that is when the fun begins. Nolan provides the straight-man, sometimes bumbling, element to this detective duo. Gwen is the smarter, more level headed character, but she sometimes has to rely on Nolan since she is of the spirit world. I love when she feeds ideas and clues to him in order to get him out of sticky situations.

As the series goes deeper, there will be other characters added, I'm sure, and I so enjoyed the character introduced in this book. I look forward to more interactions between him and Gwen. And let's not forget that Gwen is searching for answers about her own death. I can't wait to see how that plays out.

Book #1, That's the Spirit, was fabulous and so much fun to read. I loved getting to know these two and this was a story unlike any I'd read before—the real world and the spirit world working together to solve a crime. And then the author out does herself with book #2. It was even more fun!

I highly recommend this series! It was a very enjoyable story that I devoured and I look forward to more antics and crime-solving from Gwen and Nolan. Check it out!

“I don’t like this. She asked you to come here, so why is she leading you on a merry cha—”

A high-pitched scream sliced through the air, and Nolan started violently, making the chocolate he was drinking splash up out of the cup and down onto his sweater. He didn’t seem to notice or care as the cup slipped from his hands and he turned to me with a look of wide-eyed panic.

“That was Karissa! She needs help.”

Frantically, he fought his way out of the crowd of people, who were turning their heads,
their expressions befuddled as they tried to determine who or what had issued the blood-curdling sound.

“Excuse him,” I said to the individuals Nolan was carelessly trampling. Although they couldn’t hear me, it made me feel better to maintain some sense of decorum.

Once he was free of the throng, Nolan’s head whipped to the left, then to the right as he tried to figure out which way to go.

I observed that the people who were congregating by the refreshment booths and fire pits looked as confused by the noise as the ones closer to the tent, which told me that Karissa, and the reason for her shriek, were not in their midst.

“What about those tents over there?” I directed Nolan’s attention to the pair of nondescript, gray structures that could be seen just around the far corner of the exhibition tent and he took off at a run.
I’d caught sight of the twin tents earlier when we’d been in line at the What the Fudge booth. They were approximately half the size of the big, striped tent and their flaps weren’t tied back so their interiors weren’t open to public viewing, which led me to believe they were being used for storage.
Nolan banked hard to his right and almost lost his footing in the snow.

“Be careful!” I cautioned, but he was too focused on getting inside the tents and finding Karissa.

“Check that one!” Nolan waved me off to the first tent while he barreled toward its neighbor.

“I think I should stay with you,” I said and received no argument.

Pushing his way through the tent flaps that doubled as a door, Nolan called, “Karissa!”

He was stopped short by the sight that greeted him.

“Is that Scorch?” It was a reasonable assumption as I wasn’t aware of anyone else who had flames tattooed on his neck and face.

I hurried forward to get a closer look at the inked, leather-clad body lying in a supine position on the snow-covered ground while Nolan’s only concern was for the woman who was kneeling next to him, whimpering.

“Karissa.” He moved toward her slowly, holding out his hand.

Raising her tear-filled eyes to his, she said in a hushed tone, “I think he’s dead.”

“Which is generally what happens when you stab someone in the abdomen with” —I bent down to ascertain what the sharp object protruding from the man’s midsection was— “an ice pick.”

“She didn’t do it,” Nolan hissed at me.

“The blood on her hands and clothing say otherwise.” Karissa had wiped the former on the cropped, white sweater she was wearing beneath a silver, quilted jacket that had a fur-trimmed hood.

“I would never . . .” Karissa shook her head vehemently. “He was like this when I walked in, I swear. I tried to help. I thought if I could pull out that thing . . .” She flapped a blood-stained hand at the wood-handled, steel tool.

“You touched the murder weapon?” Nolan grimaced, knowing that she would have left her fingerprints all over it.

“Well, yeah.” She sniffled and swiped her hand under her nose, leaving a streak of blood behind.

“That’s what they’d do on Grey’s Anatomy, right? Remove the foreign object and apply pressure to the wound. It’s really stuck in there though. I couldn’t get it to budge, and there’s soooo much . . . blood.”

Her voice broke on the last word, and she started sobbing in earnest.

Release Day! That's the Spirit by Mallory Pierce ~ My Thoughts, an Excerpt, and a #Giveaway! #ThatsTheSpirit @MalloryPAuthor

Happy Release Day!

Congrats Mallory

That's the Spirit!

That's the Spirit by Mallory Pierce
Paranormal Cozy Mystery, 285 pages
Published October 5, 2022

He’s on a deadline; she's just . . . dead.

Brought back from the other side by a séance, Gwendolyn Frink has been roaming the halls of her family’s Victorian house for more than a century. She can’t communicate with the living, she can’t leave the premises, and she can’t stand feeling useless.

Enter Nolan Drake, aka the Guru of Gore. Suffering from a wicked case of writer’s block, the best-selling horror author purchases the empty Victorian, thinking a change of scenery from Manhattan to upstate New York might get his creative juices flowing again.

Gwen is thrilled to have a new housemate even when he turns out to be an antisocial, coffee-guzzling grump—spectral beggars can’t be choosers, right?

Nolan is not thrilled when he discovers his real estate agent's dead body in the attic of the Victorian along with its resident ghost—a very talkative, opinionated ghost who insists on him helping her solve the murder of Morgan Charles.

Can this unlikely investigative duo crack the case so that the streets of Woebrook will be safe for the town’s annual Festival of Frights? Or will they run afoul of the wrong person, dooming them both to haunt the Victorian, and drive each other batty, for eternity?

If you enjoy sassy sleuths and supernatural shenanigans, That’s the Spirit! is the book for you! It’s similar in tone and content to the works of Paranormal Cozy Mystery authors Angie Fox, Erin Huss, and Annabel Chase.

My thoughts about That's the Spirit ~~

(I love to note the first lines of the books I'm reading. First lines can really grab a reader's attention and I love seeing where the author takes the reader after their first lines.)

First line—"Death was a colossal bore."

Oh my goodness! This was such a fun book to read! I immediately fell in love with Gwendolyn Frink, the resident ghost trapped in her old home. Gwen is a hoot, I love her sense of humor and intelligence. Honestly, there were quite a few LOL moments as I got to know her and how her mind works.

When she meets the new owner of the house, writer Nolan Drake, the real fun begins. The chemistry between these two characters takes the reader on a joy ride, as they try to solve the mystery of the dead real estate agent that they discovered in the attic. You know nothing can come of them, romantically.... you know....because she's a ghost....but you sure would like it to. They play off each other so beautifully.

I loved how they worked together, in very unconventional ways mind you, to help solve the murder mystery. The situations they found themselves in were hysterical but ingenious as far as crime solving goes.

The entire story was delightful and entertaining and the ending left a perfect opening for the next story. I am so excited for this series and I can't wait for more!!

I can't recommend That's the Spirit! enough. It's the perfect story to read anytime but especially now, as it's based around Halloween and has a ghost as a main character. Lovers of romcoms, cozies, and light paranormal will fall in love with these characters and this series. 5 🌟 read for me!

EXCERPT FROM THAT’S THE SPIRIT!

by Mallory Pierce

“Mr. Drake! Mr. Drake!” I tapped his cheek with my fingers even though I knew he wouldn’t feel it. “Wake up, Mr. Drake!”

His eyelids fluttered and he groaned. “You’re only a figment of my imagination, so no need for formality. Call me Nolan.”

“Now I’m a figment of your imagination? My goodness, you are stubborn! Why won’t you just accept that I’m a ghost?”

“Because”— he struggled to push himself up to a sitting position— “it’s too weird and I might write weird, but I don’t want to live it. Ow!” Clutching the back of his head, he grimaced in pain.

“Look me in the eye,” I instructed.

“No way!” He pushed his spectacles, which were askew thanks to his fall, back up his nose and averted his gaze. “I’m not going to let you put the ghost whammy on me.”

“I’m not a ghost, remember? And a figment of your imagination cannot put a whammy, whatever that is, on you. You might have incurred a serious injury when your occipital bone struck the floor, but I can’t determine that without further examination.”

“Occipital—what’s with you and all the fancy, medical terms?” He asked, turning back toward me. “You said asphyxial earlier.”

“My father was a physician. I spent a great deal of time at his office and sometimes assisted him with patients, so I have a good deal of medical knowledge.”

I leaned in so that I could stare into his eyes, which were a lovely shade of hazel with green on the outer portion of the iris and a ring of golden brown around the pupil. Something about their color struck me as being familiar, but I couldn’t put my finger on why.

“Your pupils are the same size, and they aren’t dilated,” I announced, “so that’s a good sign. Do you feel nauseated or have ringing in your ears?”

“No, but I think I’ve lost my sense of smell because I’m not gagging on Eau de Dead Real Estate Agent anymore. She’s still over there, right?” He inclined his head to the left but didn’t glance in that direction.

“I’m afraid so. Your nose has probably just adjusted to the scent of her decompo—”

“Please stop,” he requested, looking very green around the gills, “or I’ll have to change my answer about being nauseated.”

“You’re quite squeamish for someone in your line of work. It’s not like Miss Charles’ death was as gruesome as the ones you write about, and her body is still in the first stage of decomposition. It hasn’t even started to bloat ye—”

“I’m out!” Nolan declared, standing up so fast that he swayed precariously and had to grab onto the rocking horse to steady himself.
