A Map of Days (Miss Peregrine's Peculiar Children #4) by Ransom Riggs
Print and ebook, 496 pages
Published October 2nd 2018 by Dutton Books for Young Readers

The #1 bestselling series returns with a thrilling new story arc set in America!

Vintage photographs reveal the never-before-seen world of peculiar America with a stunning addition—full-color images.

Having defeated the monstrous threat that nearly destroyed the peculiar world, Jacob Portman is back where his story began, in Florida. Except now Miss Peregrine, Emma, and their peculiar friends are with him, and doing their best to blend in. But carefree days of beach visits and normalling lessons are soon interrupted by a discovery—a subterranean bunker that belonged to Jacob’s grandfather, Abe.

Clues to Abe’s double-life as a peculiar operative start to emerge, secrets long hidden in plain sight. And Jacob begins to learn about the dangerous legacy he has inherited—truths that were part of him long before he walked into Miss Peregrine’s time loop.

Now, the stakes are higher than ever as Jacob and his friends are thrust into the untamed landscape of American peculiardom—a world with few ymbrynes, or rules—that none of them understand. New wonders, and dangers, await in this brilliant next chapter for Miss Peregrine’s peculiar children. Their story is again illustrated throughout by haunting vintage photographs, but with a striking addition for this all-new, multi-era American adventure—full color.

I LOVE this series! If you haven't read Miss Peregrine's Peculiar Children series, you really need to. It is a fabulous, quirky, wonderful set of stories revolving around some amazing children. I just love, love, love the unusualness that this author has created. I snagged a Kindle copy of book #2 when it was on sale to give to one of you. This really is a series that needs to be read in order since one book builds to the next one. And... they are in the process of filming book #1 which is due out in September. I can't wait!

Good luck and be sure to stop back next week!

About the author

Ransom Riggs

Hi, I'm Ransom, and I like to tell stories. Sometimes I tell them with words, sometimes with pictures, often with both. I grew up on a farm on the Eastern shore of Maryland and also in a little house by the beach in Englewood, Florida where I got very tan and swam every day until I became half fish. I started writing stories when I was young, on an old typewriter that jammed and longhand on legal pads. When I was a little older I got a camera for Christmas and became obsessed with photography, and when I was a little older still my friends and I came into possession of a half-broken video camera and began to make our own movies, starring ourselves, using our bedrooms and backyards for sets. I have loved writing stories and taking photographs and making movies ever since, and have endeavored to do all three.

After high school I went to Kenyon College, a very pretty and quite old by American standards college in rural Ohio, where I studied literature and got a degree in English. Then I fulfilled a long-held dream and went to film school at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. I'd been making films since the backyard-masterpiece days of my childhood, but at USC I learned how to make them bigger and better and shiny-looking. I graduated with what I thought was a pretty slick thesis film under my arm and went out into the world to conquer the film festival circuit and then Hollywood -- or at least that was the plan, though it didn't quite work out that way. I spent a few years writing scripts and taking meetings and getting not very far, trying any way I could to get noticed. All the while I was writing: for five years I had a gig as a daily blogger for mentalfloss.com, and I also wrote for their magazine, contributed to a few books they published through Harpercollins, and wrote for a couple of other publications here and there, as well.

All of which turned into an opportunity to do some work for a small publisher who knew my editors at mentalfloss. That was Quirk Books, who asked me if I was interested in writing a book about Sherlock Holmes for them. I jumped at the opportunity. That was The Sherlock Holmes Handbook. Next came Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, born out of my love for vintage photography and bizarro stories, and I never looked back. I still love movies and I still make short films (here are some recent ones) and one day I will make a feature -- when the time and the material are right. These days, though, I'm loving being a novelist, a photo collector, and an occasional short filmmaker. I live in Los Angeles with my wife, the lovely and talented Tahereh Mafi -- who is also a writer, and if you haven't read her lovely and exciting Shatter Me books you're missing out -- and we type and travel and drink tea together and it's really quite wonderful. ~~ from author's website

Miss Peregrine's Peculiar Children Boxed Set by Ransom Riggs #peculiarboxset

I absolutely love this peculiar series!!

Together for the first time, here is the #1 New York Times best seller Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children and its two sequels, Hollow City and the (newly released) Library of Souls. All three hardcovers are packaged in a beautifully designed slipcase. Also included: a special collector's envelope of twelve peculiar photographs, highlighting the most memorable moments of this extraordinary three-volume fantasy.

**********************************

I want to thank Quirk Books for sending me this amazing boxed set. My daughter-in-law created this awesome artwork to display the pictures that come with the books. I love it and this will be hanging in my library (whenever hubby gets it completed).

Created by Bambi Knutson

I thoroughly enjoyed this series full of unusual characters and admire the creativity of the author as he incorporated these pictures of peculiar people into a story and make them come alive. I recommend these books all the time, especially to teens and pre-teens who sometimes are starting to lose their interest in reading. This series should grab their attention and expand their imaginations.

And I love the quote that Bambi selected to feature!

Library of Souls (Miss Peregrine’s Peculiar Children #3) by Ransom Riggs

Library of Souls

Library of Souls by Ransom Riggs
Series: Miss Peregrine’s Peculiar Children #3
Hardcover, 400 pages
Published: September 22nd 2015 by Quirk Books

The adventures that began with Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children and continued with Hollow City comes to a thrilling conclusion with Library of Souls.

As the story opens, sixteen-year-old Jacob discovers a powerful new ability, and soon he’s diving through history to rescue his peculiar companions from a heavily guarded fortress. Accompanying Jacob on his journey are Emma Bloom, a girl with fire at her fingertips, and Addison MacHenry, a dog with a nose for sniffing out lost children.

They’ll travel from modern-day London to the labyrinthine alleys of Devil’s Acre, the most wretched slum in all of Victorian England. It’s a place where the fate of peculiar children everywhere will be decided once and for all.

Like its predecessors, Library of Souls blends thrilling fantasy with never-before-published vintage photography.

My thoughts about Library of Souls ~~

Like the other two books in this series, when I started reading Library of Souls, I could not stop. This story is so action packed and the peculiar children are in such peril that I didn't want to put the book down. It was a race to the end to find out if everyone was going to be okay.

I love the way the author incorporates some very odd photographs that he has collected into a very intriguing story about peculiar children and those who care for them. There are also those around who want to hurt them. The peculiars use the powers that they have to get themselves out of dangerous situations and to protect their secrets.

This series is just so good and appeals to my love of the unusual and unexpected. It takes a great imagination to weave these stories of things and people who are not real, while still making the story believable. I was whisked away to this other world and came to love these wonderful characters. It does make me sad that this series has come to an end but I love this author's stories and his imagination and I will be anxiously awaiting whatever he writes next.

Hollow City by Ransom Riggs comes out January 14, 2014. I absolutely LOVE book #1 in this series, Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children and have been anxiously waiting for this one! I just saw the trailer for Hollow City and it is A-MAZING!
Take a peek.

Hollow City (book 2)

In 1940 after the first book ends, Jacob and his new Welsh island friends flee to London, the Peculiar capital of the world. Caul, a dangerous madman, is Miss Peregrine’s brother, and can steal Peculiar abilities for himself. The Peculiars must fight for survival, again.

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children (book 1)

A horrific family tragedy sends Jacob to a remote island off Wales, to the crumbling ruins of Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, where he finds unusual old photographs. The children, one his grandfather, were more than peculiar, perhaps dangerous, quarantined for good reason - and maybe still alive.

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs and a Giveaway!

A mysterious island. An abandoned orphanage. And a strange collection of very curious photographs. It all waits to be discovered in Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, an unforgettable novel that mixes fiction and photography in a thrilling reading experience.

As our story opens, a horrific family tragedy sets sixteen-year-old Jacob journeying to a remote island off the coast of Wales, where he discovers the crumbling ruins of Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. As Jacob explores its abandoned bedrooms and hallways, it becomes clear that the children who once lived here - one of whom was his own grandfather - were more than just peculiar. They may have been dangerous. They may have been quarantined on a desolate island for good reason.

And somehow - impossible though it seems - they may still be alive. ~~ synopsis form Goodreads

My thoughts about Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children ~~

Once again, I was grabbed by an awesome cover. And then there's the fact that I am a huge Stephen King fan so a creepy sounding book was right up my alley. I knew I just HAD to read this one. I am not sure why I let it sit on my shelf for so long after I got it. I think I was waiting until I could savor the story.

And that time finally came.

I loved everything about this story. It has family stuff, monsters, storytelling, spookiness, time travel, and lots of action. And then there are the awesome pictures of the peculiar children to go along with the story.

This book is unlike anything I have read recently and I was totally immersed in the story. I loved it!

And ... I just discovered that Miss Peregrine's #2 is expected to be published June 2013!! I can't wait!

About the author

I grew up in Florida, went to Kenyon College in Ohio, then film school at USC in LA, where I still live. I write books and screenplays, blog daily for mentalfloss.com, and make short films.

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children is my first novel. I'm really excited about it -- it was challenging and rewarding and I hope people like it. If you read that and like the found photographs in it, you might be interested in a book comprised entirely of found photographs that I have coming out January 2012 from HarperCollins. It's called Talking Pictures. You can find sneak peeks by doing a search for "mental floss talking pictures" (I included a number of images in blogs there) and I made a kinda-sorta book trailer for it, which is on my youtube page: youtube.com/ransriggs.
