Mei already has enough on her mind as she struggles to care for her terminally ill mother and recover from her broken engagement, but she can’t help poking around the Turners, convinced that there’s more to the suspicious poisoning than a simple accident. As Mei continues to push for answers, she may just send the carefully laid dominoes of the Turner empire crashing down.
My thoughts about See How They Fall ~~
(I love to note the first lines of the books I'm reading. First lines can really grab a reader's attention and I love seeing where the author takes the reader after their first lines.)
First lines—"I couldn't face another fight. Duncan had been irritable for weeks now - ever since his dad's funeral - so I was silent on the drive north from Sydney, picking ceramic clay from under my fingernails while dusty paddocks and straggly tress flicked by."
What an amazing debut novel! I am excited to see what Rachel Paris has for us next.
See How They Fall is basically told from two points of view. First there is Skye, along with the rest of the Campbell family who have plenty of issues. Things take a big turn over the family weekend when one member turns up dead and Skye's daughter is in the PICU fighting for her life. Then there's Mei O'Connor, the officer assigned to the Campbell case. While trying to solve the puzzle of whodunnit, her professional life takes a dive and she doesn't know who she can trust anymore.
I felt like I was in a race against the clock, feeling the need for this crime to be solved before anyone else got hurt or killed. So much tension and drama. Why were there so many roadblocks thrown at these people? The story was intense at times and I couldn't stop reading, I didn't want to leave the characters hanging in a precarious situation. Yes, I was that immersed in the story!
This is a superb debut thriller and I highly recommend it to all thriller lovers. I will definitely be keeping an eye out for Rachel Paris' next novel.
