Crushed
by Deborah Coonts
Paperback ~ Published February 2016

In Napa Valley, he who has the best grapes wins. And in the pursuit of perfection, dreams and hearts can be crushed.

Sophia Stone is a widow on the brink of an empty nest, stuck in an unsatisfying job managing the vineyard for a mediocre Napa vintner. Faced with an uncertain future she wonders how do you choose between making a living and making a life? Between protecting your heart and sharing it? Five years ago, after her husband was killed in an accident, Sophia put her heart and dreams on ice to care for those around her. Now her home, her dreams, and her family's legacy grapes are threatened by the greed of the new money moving into the Valley. Sophia has a choice--give up and let them take what is hers, or risk everything fighting a battle everyone says she can't win.

Nico Treviani has one goal in life: make brilliant wine. A woman would be an unwanted distraction. So, while recognized as one of Napa's premier vintners, Nico finds himself alone... until his brother's death drops not one, but two women into his life--his thirteen-year-old twin nieces. In an instant, Nico gains a family and loses his best friend and partner in the winemaking business. Struggling to care for his nieces, Nico accepts a job as head winemaker for Avery Specter, one of the new-money crowd. And he learns the hard way that new money doesn't stick to the old rules.

When Sophia Stone gets caught in the middle of Nico's struggle to remain true to himself or sacrifice his convictions to make stellar wine, both Sophia and Nico are faced with a choice they never imagined. A choice that might extinguish the hope of a future neither expected.

Incendiary Girls
by Kodi Scheer
Paperback ~ Published April 2014

Incendiary Girls explores our baser instincts with vivid imagination and humor. In these stories, our bodies become strange and unfamiliar terrain, a medium for transformation.

In “Fundamental Laws of Nature,” a doctor considers her legacy, both good and bad, when she discovers that her mother has been reincarnated as a thoroughbred mare. In the title story, a mischievous angel chronicles the remarkable life of a girl just beyond death’s reach. In Scheer’s hands, empathy and attachment are illuminated by the absurdity of life. When our bodies betray us, when we begin to feel our minds slip, how much can we embrace without going insane? How much can we detach ourselves before losing our humanity?

Scheer’s stories grapple with these questions in each throbbing, choking, heartbreaking moment.

This OR That #Giveaway Week 7 ~ Wanna Get Lucky? by Deborah Coonts OR Looking for Alaska by John Green #WannaGetLucky #LookingForAlaska

I have sooooo many books!

The This or That Giveaway! feature that I post every Saturday is a way for me to share some of the many books I've read, as well as clearing off my overloaded shelves and giving someone else a chance to enjoy these treasures.

Good luck and be sure to stop back next week!

*****************

I read this book when it came out on 2011. I loved it—what a great beginning to an entertaining and fun series. Lucky is a hoot! This is book one and there are many more after this one. I've read several of them but not all. I really need to go back to Lucky's world!

Wanna Get Lucky?
(Lucky O'Toole #1)
by Deborah Coonts
Mass Market Paperback ~ Pub date February 2011

A young woman plunges from a Las Vegas sightseeing helicopter, landing in the Pirate Lagoon in front of the Treasure Island Hotel in the middle of the 8:30 Pirate Show. Almost everyone writes her off as another Vegas victim. But, Lucky O’Toole, head of customer relations at the Babylon megacasino, smells a rat, though she’s got a lot on her plate: the adult film industry’s annual awards banquet, a spouse-swapping convention, sex-toy purveyors preying on the pocket-protector crowd attending ElectroniCon… Still Lucky can’t resist turning over a few stones.

When a former flame is one of the snakes she uncovers, Lucky is certain the woman’s death was no Sin City suicide. To top it all off, Lucky’s best friend, Teddie—Las Vegas’s finest female impersonator—presses to take their relationship to the next level. Leave it to Lucky to attract a man who looks better in a dress than she does.

Lucky must manage the Babylon’s outrageous festivities, solve the crime, and struggle to keep her life and libido from spinning out of control.

I read this one just last year, to cross off one of the prompts for a challenge I was doing (state). It has been around quite a few years and has won a ton of awards. It was a great read.

Looking for Alaska
by John Green
Paperback ~ Pub date December 2006

Before.

Miles “Pudge” Halter is done with his safe life at home. His whole life has been one big non-event, and his obsession with famous last words has only made him crave “the Great Perhaps” even more (Francois Rabelais, poet). He heads off to the sometimes crazy and anything-but-boring world of Culver Creek Boarding School, and his life becomes the opposite of safe. Because down the hall is Alaska Young. The gorgeous, clever, funny, sexy, self-destructive, screwed up, and utterly fascinating Alaska Young. She is an event unto herself. She pulls Pudge into her world, launches him into the Great Perhaps, and steals his heart. Then. . . .

After.

Nothing is ever the same.

Lucky Score

Lucky Score by Deborah Coonts
Series: Lucky O'Toole #9
Paperback and e-book, 376 pages
Published: February 7th 2018 by Chestnut Street Press

If Lucky O’Toole, chief problem solver for the Babylon, Vegas’ primo Strip property, knows one thing—where money goes, trouble follows.

So, when the NFL announces it’s moving a team to Vegas, Lucky is left on the fence until the trouble she feared lands in her lap.

Nolan Ponder, one of the key players in the negotiations to get the NFL to Sin City, staggers into the Babylon covered in blood and holding a knife.

With the mountains of money and careers on the line, Lucky figured someone would try to kill the deal.

But murder?

Chasing down a murderer is the last thing she needs.

Teddie, her former live-in lover is exploiting every angle to get back into her heart.

Jean-Charles, her fiancé, is planning a trip to France to introduce Lucky to his family.

Mona, her mother, still hasn’t named her twins.

Lucky’s life is quickly becoming a game of murder and mayhem.

She just hopes this game won’t go into overtime.

I love this series! I haven't read all of them yet but I'm working my way through them. Lucky and the cast of characters in this series are quirky, fabulous, and fun. This series kind of reminds me of the Janet Evanovich Stephanie Plum series, but set in Vegas. If you haven't tried these books yet, you really should!

Check out the whole series here or here.

So Damn Lucky by Deborah Coonts ~ My Thoughts

So Damn Lucky

So Damn Lucky by Deborah Coonts
Series: Lucky O'Toole #3
Kindle Edition, 384 pages
Published June 13th 2015

Magician Dimitri Fortunoff appears to have a fatal accident while performing his final trick at the performance marking the end of a forty-year run of one of Las Vegas’ most renowned burlesque shows. Soon after, his body disappears and the questions mount for Lucky O’toole, head of Customer Relations for the Babylon resort, the crown jewel of the mega-resorts dotting the Las Vegas Strip.

But the timing couldn’t be worse. Her live-in lover, Teddie, is on tour with a young and lovely pop star. Paxton Dane, a handsome Texan long on charisma and short on history, is forcing himself into the void of Teddie’s absence, and a suave French chef is proving to be equal parts charm and venom, seasoned with a dash of irresistible.

But Lucky can’t shake the question: Did Dimitri Fortunoff really die or is this an elaborate hoax? The trail leads her through the miles of storm culverts under the city of Las Vegas, to the hordes of believers who gather at Rachel for a glimpse of a UFO, to hints of secret programs at Area 51, then culminates on the catwalk above the crowd attending the annual, Harry Houdini Séance on Halloween, where Lucky must risk her life to catch a killer.

My thoughts about So Damn Lucky ~~

(I love to note the first lines of the books I'm reading. First lines can really grab a reader's attention and I love seeing where the author takes the reader after their first lines.)

First line—"Some things in life are best savored alone—sex is not one of them."

Lucky O'Toole has a great life. She is head of Customer Relations for the Babylon resort, she has a lot of respect in the community, she has a set of parents who love her, and a boyfriend who may or may not want to commit. Well, that last part might not be so great.

I love this series. I never know what kind of adventure I will be starting when I open the next book. I know I can count on great characters getting into all kinds of trouble. And lots of humor. And there's always the mystery that Lucky has to solve but that's what makes this series a pageturner. How can so much go wrong? It's so much fun trying to figure out how it's all going to turn out.

I enjoy being a part of Lucky's world and I can't wait to start my next adventure with Lucky and her crew.

Lucky in Love by Deborah Coonts ~ My Thoughts

Lucky in Love

Lucky in Love by Deborah Coonts
Series: Lucky O'Toole #2.5
Kindle e-book, 122 pages
Published Published June 13th 2015 by Deborah B. Coonts

Lucky O’Toole, the Vice President of Customer Relations for the Babylon, one of Las Vegas’ most over-the-top strip properties, is seriously regretting booking a reality television show, The Forever Game, into the small theatre at her hotel. One thing she knows for sure: Vegas does NOT need a dose of reality.

The four couples competing in the Forever Game add their own mischief to the incendiary mix normally available in Sin City while competing for a Las Vegas wedding extravaganza. The host of the show, Trey Gold, appears interested only in keeping the spotlight on himself while the contestants run-wild sampling all Vegas has to offer, threatening to blow the whole show out of the water.

Not only must Lucky keep the couples from killing each other, killing their relationships, or ending up on the front page of the Review-Journal, she has to navigate the rocky road to love herself. Teddie, her live-in lover is leaning more-and-more towards chasing a new dream as a singer, leaving Vegas…and Lucky behind. And a new French chef who seems determined to muddy the murky waters of love even further.

Then there’s Lucky’s mother, Mona, who never could leave well enough alone….

My thoughts about Lucky in Love ~~

(I love to note the first lines of the books I'm reading. First lines can really grab a reader's attention and I love seeing where the author takes the reader after their first lines.)

First line—"'Did you know my wife is seriously into chicks?' The guy was brave, I'd grant him that. Approaching a woman in a bar with that line was no small feat, even in Vegas."

And so begins another fun romp into Lucky's world. I love Lucky and this series is such a treat to read. First of all, it's set in Vegas, and who doesn't have a good time there?

Then there's the fun, quirky set of character. I love catching up with them with each new story and it's wonderful to see the characters grow and move forward with their lives. Some series I have read just seem like things stay the same. Not this one—you never know what is going happen. The humor in this series and the great characters keep me coming back for more.

Lucky Stiff by Deborah Coonts - My Thoughts

25781849

Lucky Stiff

Lucky Stiff by Deborah Coonts
Series: Lucky O'Toole #2
Print and e-book, 344 pages
Published July 13th 2015 by Deborah B. Coonts (first published February 15th 2011)

Lucky O'Toole--Head of Customer Relations at The Babylon, premier mega-resort on the Vegas Strip--thinks it's just another night in Las Vegas. A tractor-trailer has spilled its load of a million honeybees, blocking not only the Strip but the entrance to her hotel... the District Attorney for Clark County—apparently the odd man out of a threesome on the twelfth floor—is hiding in the buff in one of the hotel's laundry rooms... and Numbers Neidermeyer--one of Vegas' less-than-savory oddsmakers--is arguing with Las Vegas' ace private investigator, the Beautiful Jeremy Whitlock.

The next day, Lucky discovers Ms. Neidermeyer was tossed into the shark tank at the Mandalay Bay Resort as a snack for the Tiger Shark. When the police show up at the Babylon with a hastily prepared search warrant, applied for by the District Attorney himself, and Jeremy lands in the hot seat, Lucky realizes her previous night was far from routine.

Amid the chaos of fight weekend, the hiring of an eccentric new French chef, and her madam mother's intentions to auction off a young woman's virginity, Lucky is drawn into a deadly game where no one is what they seem, a game that will end only when she discovers who made fish-food out of Numbers Neidermeyer.

Lucky O'Toole and Fabulous Las Vegas—life doesn't get any better.

My thoughts about Lucky Stiff ~~

(I love to note the first lines of the books I'm reading. First lines can really grab a reader's attention and I love seeing where the author takes the reader after their first line.)

First line—'Millions of enraged honeybees had done the impossible: Single-handedly they brought the Las Vegas Strip to a standstill.'

Okay, I'll admit it. It has been awhile since I read book #1 in this series. But I was excited to get a chance to add Lucky Stiff to my review list. And it was like connecting with an old friend again. You know what it's like—you don't see or hear from that good friend for a number of years but when you reconnect, it's like you just saw each other last week—you just pick up where you left off. That's the way I felt with Lucky. I was right back in her world, like I had never left.

This series is such a fun set of stories. Lucky and her cronies are so unique and the people and problems they run into kept me so entertained as I flew through the pages. It felt like I was experiencing the craziness of Vegas, but from an insider's point of view. These people were just doing their job, making sure that everything was running smoothly.

Lucky Stiff starts off with a truck full of bees loose in Vegas. I loved it! A very good friend of mine works at the local honey farm and her life is all about bees so it was a treat to see bees be such a big part of this story. I love it when I can find a personal connection to the story I am reading. And someday..... I hope to take a trip to Vegas. It's on my bucket list and Lucky's stories make me want to go even more.

I am looking forward to continuing on with this series and I don't plan to be away from Lucky's world for very long. I enjoyed my time there and I can't wait to go back.

Crushed

Crushed by Deborah Coonts
Series: The Heart of Napa #1
Paperback and e-book, 281 pages
Published February 17th 2016 by Deborah Coonts

Sophia Stone is a widow on the brink of an empty nest, stuck in an unsatisfying job managing the vineyard for a mediocre Napa vintner. My thoughts about Crushed ~~

(I love to note the first lines of the books I'm reading. First lines can really grab a reader's attention and I love seeing where the author takes the reader after their first line.)

First line—'Sophia Stone knew life held few absolutes: good wine is art, good Italian cooking is passion, a good child is a gift, and good news never comes in a certified letter.'

I have read some of Deborah's Lucky series books in the past and loved them. I jumped at the chance to read Crushed, book 1 in a new series, The Heart of Napa, that she is writing. Crushed is very different from the Lucky books but it was just as enjoyable.

We get to spend time with Sophia and Nico in the beautiful Napa Valley. And we learn a little about growing grapes and making wine.

'Anybody could grow grapes. But growing good grapes was an art.'

Sophia thinks she has found someone who believes in her vision of producing a great wine. But at the same time, she is on the brink of losing everything that is important to her. Can she and Nico find the magic needed to make that perfect wine, and that perfect relationship, or is he out to get all that she holds dear?

There are so many wonderful characters in this story and I was immediately enthralled with all of them. And I loved all the different relationships in this story. I can't wait to see what the next books in this series will bring.

Thank you to Kate Tilton and the author for a copy of Crushed in exchange for my honest opinion.

On Tour: Lucky Catch by Deborah Coonts, Voices, the Trailer, and a Giveaway!

Lucky Catch

Lucky Catch by Deborah Coonts
Series: Lucky O’Toole Vegas Adventure #5
Paperback
Expected publication: August 26th 2014 by Cool Gus Publishing

Trouble always comes in threes. At least that’s what Lucky O’Toole, the VP of Customer Relations for Las Vegas’ primo Strip casino/hotel, the Babylon, has heard for years from her mother. So, tonight, when Teddie, her former lover shows up at her office unannounced and very unexpected, her father offers Teddie a job at the Babylon, she is called to deal with a pig in residence at one of the hotels most exclusive and opulent suites, and Lucky’s current lover, Jean-Charles Bouclet stops answering his phone leaving Lucky to handle his five-year-old son, Lucky figures she has tonight’s compliment of chaos covered.

As usual, she is a tad optimistic.

With a cadre of celebrity chefs with the maturity of teenagers in Vegas for a televised cook-off, a prized Alba truffle in the Babylon’s care, and her mother’s pregnancy racing toward the inevitable, what could go wrong?

When the truffle is stolen from the walk-in in Jean-Charles’ gourmet burger joint at the Babylon and a young chef apparently killed with a smoking gun is found in Jean-Charles’ food truck on the back lot, trouble takes a sinister turn.

And Jean-Charles still isn’t answering his phone.

Another body is discovered. This one stuffed in an oven at Jean-Charles’ eponymous restaurant and set to broil.

Desperate to put a lid on the body count and more than frantic over her AWOL lover, Lucky uses her Vegas contacts to search in places and in ways the police wouldn’t or couldn’t. Teddie insists on riding shotgun.  Lucky hasn’t the time nor the resolve to say no. She’s never been able to resist Teddie … not really. With danger dogging their heels, Lucky finds herself falling once again under his spell as they traverse Vegas, being drawn deeper and deeper into the highly competitive world of high-end eateries and the battle for the very rare, most highly prized gourmet foodstuffs.

Would somebody really kill for a truffle?

In a heartbeat.

And when Lucky’s path crosses the killer’s… will her goose be cooked?

Trailer

Welcome to The Book Bag today, Deborah! I have a question I like to ask authors, I call it my 'Voices' question. I love hearing the responses. I think it gives us valuable insight into an author's mind.

Again, thanks for being here and I wish you much success with Lucky Catch.

I have heard other authors say that they 'hear voices in their head' and that is how they write their books: the characters are telling their stories. Not being a writer myself, that concept has always intrigued me.

When some people hear voices, we get them medical attention, others end up becoming writers. Does this happen to you? How do you come up with your stories?

Ah, yes, that whole “visual” thing.  At the risk of sounding as if I need serious psychiatric care, I do see imaginary people…and they do talk to me.  In fact, when we get to know each other well, say in the middle of a story, they often awaken me from a sound sleep, get me out or the shower, or up from dinner, to listen and note what they want to tell me.  You’d think I could have imaginary friends with better manners…..

Years ago I dated a psychologist….briefly.  One day he called me up and asked me what I was going to do all day (people often think that because I don’t go in to an office, I don’t work—some of them are lucky to be alive).  I told him I was planning on doing what I do every day: play with my imaginary friends.  There was a pause, then he said, “You know, to most in my profession you would be an annuity.”  Yes, well, I live in fantasy world and I’m happy there.  People treat me nicely, they amuse me, I can write men the way I wish they would be…and I can kill people I don’t like without going to jail.  What’s not to like?

When I wrote WANNA GET LUCKY? I was sure it was the only good story I would ever have.  Wrong.  Once you open that door in your brain and let the stories in, word gets out, and other stories beat a path to you.  It’s sorta like what happened to the Whoopi Goldberg character in Ghost.  Mainly though, I get ideas from listening to other people talk and tell me about their interests, their passions.  Or, I have an innocent question that leads me to murder.  That’s how the current book, LUCKY CATCH (out August 26th), came to be.

You see, it all started with a smoking gun.

I was eating dinner at one of my favorite local restaurants in Vegas, Due Forni, with two of my best buds, one of them a chef.  As a first course, we ordered some of the homemade mozzarella and their famous bread (totally to die for).  I ordered the smoked cheese and, through mouthfuls I expressed my pleasure and my wonder at how they imparted the smoky flavor.  I’m originally from Texas and the whole smoked thing is a religion there—but it requires a huge smoker and tons of hickory and I didn’t see that sort of set up at Due Forni.  So, I wondered out loud how someone might give fresh mozzarella a smoked flavor.

My bud, the chef, looked at me as if I’d been living under a rock and announced, “With a smoking gun, of course.”

But, of course!  A smoking gun.  Who knew?

That little tidbit stopped me mid-bite and totally derailed his dinner as I peppered him with questions.

I mean, there’s just something so prosaic about killing someone with a smoking gun, don’t you think?

So, off the story ran, as stories are wont to do.  Before long I found myself mired hip-deep in the world of gourmet cookery. And I became interested in the conundrum of serving incredibly fresh food in a place that is as hospitable to the nurture of delicate plants and exotic fish as the surface of the moon.  And that led to research into the pipeline for gourmet foodstuffs, the need for temperature control, for impeccable and consistent quality and lightning fast shipments.  All of this is incredibly competitive, with the top-tier chefs locked in a fierce battle for the freshest, most unique items on the planet.

The perfect recipe for murder.

Or several, as the case may be… kitchens are dangerous places, you know.

Please join Lucky on her wild ride through the kitchens of Vegas and find out whether Lucky can clear her chef of multiple murders before his goose is cooked, whether she decides it’s possible to love again without being parboiled in the process, and who her LUCKY CATCH might be.

And whether I might be shot for working a metaphor so hard it rolled over and died.

About the author

I am proof positive that sex sells…and persistence pays off. After fifteen years learning the craft of writing, I am now officially, an overnight success. And it’s been a long road to get here…

My mother tells me I was born in Texas a very long time ago, but I’m not so sure—my mother can’t be trusted. These things I do know: I was raised in Texas on barbeque, Mexican food and beer. I’ve lived in every time zone in the U.S.; the most memorable stint being the time spent in Las Vegas, where I currently reside and where family and friends tell me I can't get into too much trouble...silly people.

The only constant in my life (besides my family, who deserves hazardous duty pay for sticking with me) has been change (my mother is still waiting for me to grow up). Silly woman.

But all of this career ADD made me incredibly unemployable. Hence the whole writing thing.

Actually, I’ve known from a young age that somehow stories would be a large part of my life, but my path to telling lies for a living (okay, not lies per se, but variations of the truth, for sure) has been circuitous. If someone had just told me when I was a kid that I could actually be paid to daydream for a living, life would have been soooo much easier. But they didn’t. And I never saw a ‘daydreaming’ booth at all those Career Days I attended.

So, initially discouraged when unable to locate anyone willing to pay me to read books, go to the movies, or attend the theatre, and in need of providing for the best child in the world, my son Tyler, I spent years being someone else—an accountant (blech), a business owner (pretty fun), a lawyer (loved law school, hated practicing law), a pilot (giddy and terrifying at the same time). But through it all, I wrote. Along the way I wrote the world’s worst novel, a slightly more well-crafted but equally as poorly plotted novel, several non-fiction feature articles (my first sales!), multiple humor columns for a national magazine (more sales!), and, finally, the novel that sold, Wanna Get Lucky?, the first in a series to be published by Forge Books. The series is a Sex and the City meets Elmore Leonard in Vegas kind of thing, if you can imagine that. Okay, have several glasses of wine, then think about it…makes imagining easier. Anyway, the books are sexy, wry, romantic, and slightly naughty mixed with a little murder and mayhem—shaken, not stirred—then illuminated by the bright lights of Las Vegas—one of the truly magical cities in the world.

Many of my friends have asked me how in the world I came up with the Lucky series. The way they asked led me to believe they thought mind-altering substances might have been involved even though they knew the worst I do is a glass of fine Pinot-Noir. The answer to their question is actually very simple: let your fifteen-year-old male child pick where you live, follow his dream to Vegas, then keep your eyes open.

Hey, it worked for me!
