My thoughts about Love in Darkness ~~

Today is my stop on the Love in Darkness tour, sponsored by AToMR Tours. You can visit the other stops on the tour here.

Yesterday I posted my thoughts about book #1 in this series, Castles on the Sand. You can read them here.

Love is Darkness is book #2 is the Shattered Castles series but can be read as a standalone novel. I thoroughly enjoyed book #1, Castles on the Sand, and was glad that I had read it first. Emily does a great job writing Love to be enjoyed by itself but I know that I got so much more out of it by having read Castles first.

I loved Madison in the first book and the troubled relationship that continues in book #2 between Madison and Alex kept me very interested in reading more. Alex has a lot of issues to work through and feels he should go it alone. But should anyone be alone?

Once again, Emily has written a very enjoyable, touching story that I was able to get lost in and savor.

Castles on the Sand (Shattered Castles #1)

If there’s one thing Madison Lukas understands, it’s pain. The pain she feels when her mother ignores her completely. The pain her best friend endures as her parents starve her as punishment. The pain of a dangerous boy whose mother has to be carried away by law enforcement on a regular basis.

She gets it. She feels the pain of others as if it were her own.

But when a mysterious man claiming to be her long lost brother appears with promises of relieving her suffering, trusting him could reveal more truths than Madison is ready for. Because the truth can hurt, too.

My thoughts about Castles on the Sand ~~

I thoroughly enjoyed Castles on the Sand. Emily writes such beautiful, believable stories that just flow off the pages and into my mind. Madison is a wonderful, caring person in this story and I immediately liked her. She is a good friend to all those she is around, even though sometimes she gets hurt by them. She sees past her hurt and remains loyal to her friends.

I was totally immersed in the story and nearly read it in one sitting. I love it when a story grabs me like that and the pages just fly.

Castles on the Sand is a great book for teens. It has all the issues that teens everywhere have to deal with; friendships (good and bad), suicide, reputations, parties, dating, sex, right and wrong.

This story does delve in to the Mormon religion and missionaries, which is something I am not at all familiar with. It was very interesting to learn about another way of life and religion.

Be sure to check tomorrow for my stop on the Love in Darkness blog tour. Love in Darkness is book #2 in the Shattered Castles series.

Alex had everything when he was with Madison. But the darkness within him wouldn't go away. After two years apart, he returns to Pelican Bluffs and to the girl he never wanted to leave.

Madison wants to give their love another chance, but Alex can’t fight fate. He is what he is. Ruined. Crazy like his mother. And Madison deserves so much more. When his secrets spill out into their small town, Alex has a choice to make. Hide away in the darkness forever, or let love in.

Excerpt from Love in Darkness
I push through the glass doors and step out onto the asphalt of the parking lot, right into Madison. I put my hands up to shield myself and she does an awkward sidestep to avoid collision.
For a moment we just stare at each other and I lower my hands slowly, unsure of what to say.
“Sorry,” is what she says. Those pale eyes of hers stay fixed on my face. Her hair’s still a little damp from the shower and the smell of her herbal shampoo perfumes the air. Those lips of hers are a soft pink and shine from a fresh application of lip gloss, and she scowls a little, like she always does when unhappy.
“No,” I say, “my fault. I didn't look.”
She bites her lip.
Standing this close, she’s irresistible. I want, so badly, to put my arms around her. What’s worse is that encounters like this will happen, and keep happening as long as we both live in town.
She drops her gaze to the pavement.
Yeah, this isn't working. “Can we talk?” I ask.
A wordless nod is her only reply and we turn and walk back towards her subdivision.
I touch her arm to make her look up at me, then regret it. Even just a touch sends electricity up my arm. “I’m sorry, okay? For ending things the way I did.”
“You sure there’s no chance for us?”
“I’m sorry.”
“How can you just throw away the last three years? I mean, that’s it? You’re not interested, end of story? I've waited two years for you, and it’s like you don’t even care.” At least she’s angry and not sad.
This is torture. My body aches, physically, for the feel of her. I want to taste those lips and run my fingers through her hair and feel the cool dampness of each strand. I want to take her home and see if I remember how to kiss her neck so gently that she tips her head back, eyes closed, surrendering to my touch.
Alex, I think, quit it. Not appropriate. I stop and turn.
She locks her gaze with mine. “I want to be with you. There’s no one else I've ever felt this way about.”
It feels natural to step in for a hug, but I stop myself and clench my fists instead. “I’m an unemployed high school dropout with a psychotic disorder. You can do better. In fact, it’d be hard for you to do worse.”
“But-”
“I never wanted to lose you, but there’s nothing I can really do about that. You’re out of my league.”
“We could try to work things out,” she pleads.
“All the trying in the world won’t change my condition.” And with that, I hit the limits of my control. I’m being gazed at by the love of my life and I need to get out of here. Worse, I sense the voices jabbering away on their plane of existence, and I have to remind myself, they don’t have any plane of existence. They don’t exist. Here I go again, though. I wonder how long I have until my next breakdown.
Like I said, I always knew I wasn't the greatest guy, but walking away from Madison feels like a new low for me. I try to hold onto the thought that I’m doing this for her.
Anger rushes in my ears like a windstorm. Any second I expect to hear her run after me and feel her hand on my wrist or shoulder, but that never comes. I make it to the corner of Main Street and Ridge Road, and when I look, no one is behind me, which makes me even angrier, even though I know that’s not fair.

On Tour: Nobody's Damsel by E. M. Tippetts, an Excerpt and a Tour Giveaway!

Chloe has finished her masters degree and taken a job as a forensic scientist back in her home town of Albuquerque, New Mexico, only the press will not leave her alone. They follow her to crime scenes and report on her every move, eager to show that her marriage to Hollywood A-lister, Jason Vanderholt, is on the brink of collapse. Millions of fans who dream of their own celebrity romance with him want this more than anything. This scrutiny comes at a particularly bad time as Chloe's first case is a crime against a child roughly the same age that Chloe was when she survived a homicide attempt.

Now that she sees the case from an adult's perspective, she realizes it's much harder than she ever dreamed. It's even worse for Jason, who is two steps removed from the crime. He must watch and try to support his wife as she battles with past demons and tries to keep up with a nameless suspect who evades identification and capture. Never has Jason been more frustrated with his job, its frivolities, and its lack of connection to the real world. When he storms off the set of his latest movie, the press goes wild with conjecture. Perhaps he never was anything more than a pretty face after all.

Together, Chloe and Jason must find their way past all the popping flashbulbs and through the dark maze of the criminal investigation to discover whether they can balance their professional goals with the demands of a celebrity marriage. The odds are entirely against them. ~~ synopsis from Goodreads

My thoughts about Nobody's Damsel ~~

Nobody's Damsel is book #2 in the Someone Else's Fairytale series. I read book #1 in March and loved the story. You can read my thoughts here. And if I can be honest, I think I love #2 even more! Someone Else's Fairytale has our 2 main characters meeting and trying to figure out if they can be together or not. They come from places that are worlds apart, but yet they really aren't that much different from each other, when you really get right down to it.

So, book #1 takes place mainly in Jason's world; the world of Hollywood, movies, and movie stars. And Chloe is a student studying forensic science. Yep, pretty much worlds apart, wouldn't you say? Well then, book #2 is centered more in Chloe's world, where she examines crime scenes and tries to nail the bad guys. Now that's the kind of story I like to sink my teeth into.

Chloe and Jason are great characters and I loved seeing them develop and grow in Nobody's Damsel. I really like the direction this series is taking. The reader doesn't get a rehash of book #1, it's a totally new story involving this wonderful couple again, moving on through their lives. The author did mention to me that she plans to alternate the main story in future books; some in the movie world, some in the forensic world. I think I am going to love that! I can't wait to see what the next Fairytale story is going to be! This has become one of my 'must read' series.

An excerpt from Nobody's Damsel
The street was crawling with emergency personnel, the neighborhood unremarkable and suburban. Three and four bedroom homes with peaked roofs and eaves were set back from the road behind tiny lawns or xeriscape – a popular choice in the desert. A patrol car was parked in front of the crime scene, a fire truck across the street, its lights still flashing. One cop stood in the open doorway, another in the middle of the yard, fending off a crowd of rubberneckers. A man in plainclothes who seemed familiar, but I couldn't place, stood in the doorway and talked on a cellphone. Two personnel who might have been firefighters (I didn't have the uniforms memorized yet) could be seen inside the house through an uncurtained window.
“No, no, no!” shouted Miguel. He jumped out of the CSI van before I even parked it and slammed the door with a bang. I rolled down my window so I could hear what was going on while I parked the van and felt the cool evening air that smelled slightly of wood smoke.
“Get out of the house. Get back,” he shouted. “Away from the house. Consider the entire lot and the street, and possibly the neighborhood part of the crime scene. Vanderholt? Where are you?”
It was not easy to parallel park a van on a street where the driveways were less than a van length apart, but I did my best and killed the engine.
“Where’s the crime scene tape?” he hollered at me.
This was my first time in the CSI van, so I had no idea. I climbed into the back to look around and found a big roll of it right by the rear doors, which I shoved open. With the roll in hand, I jumped down.
Miguel snatched it. “Give me that.” He ran towards the house. “Everyone out! Out! Hey, do we have a search warrant yet for the house? I don't care if you entered legally. If we're gathering evidence, we need a warrant – shut up! Do we know if the victim is the only occupant? Get the DA on the phone. Someone’s called the DA, right?”
Yeah, this was going to be a long night.
“Excuse me,” said the man in plain clothes, holding a cellphone. “I’m on the phone with the DA right now.” I surmised from this that he was the detective, and thus in charge of the scene, and his voice was really familiar.
“Well get everyone away from the house. What’s the matter with you people?” He turned and marched towards the end of the street. “Two roadblocks,” he shouted. “The whole neighborhood is of interest. Two roadblocks. One here, one there.” He pointed at the other end of the block. “Vanderholt!”
I was already on my way to join him. When he saw that, he glared balefully. “Traffic cones,” he demanded.
I turned around to head back to the van. The crowd in front of the house had all turned. A dozen pairs of eyes bored holes into my skin and I looked back, uncertain. Nearly all of them were women.
“It’s her,” I heard one of them say.
“She really does work for the APD.”
“Wait, who’s that?” said a male voice.
“Shhh. Chloe Vanderholt.”
“I hear they're getting a divorce.”

E. M. Tippetts, Voices. and a Couple of Giveaways!

Yesterday I posted my thoughts about the amazing, fun book by E.M. Tippetts, Someone Else's Fairytale. You can read my thoughts here. Today I have Emily here at The Book Bag giving her response to the 'voices' question I like to ask authors.

I have to say that her response is probably one of the best ones I have ever received from an author; very well thought out and she makes a lot of good points.

So here goes ~~

I have heard other authors say that they 'hear voices in their head' and that is how they write their books: the characters are telling their stories. Not being a writer myself, that concept has always intrigued me.

When some people hear voices, we get them medical attention, others end up becoming writers. Does this happen to you? How do you come up with your stories?
I’m somewhat skeptical that authors hear their characters voices in the same way people who need medical attention hear voices. Which isn't to say we don’t hear voices and spend a lot of time with imaginary people. We do, but we’re in the business of creating imaginary people and making them talk. Thus, I think a writer hears voices very much the way that an architect sees completed buildings that haven’t been built and a musician hears music that has never been played. We train our minds to do this and some of us have a natural inclination to do it even before we start training. And yet, there’s an odd glamour that some of us attach to being a little mental, and I have to say, I've never understood it.
Now, I don’t want to get up on a soapbox and preach, so I’ll keep this part brief. I think mental illness is widely misunderstood, and idealized in a somewhat unhealthy way. So yes, it bothers me when I hear writers or other artists bragging about how they've got a mental disorder, as if this is some badge of greatness or authenticity. Again, I don’t want to preach. I merely want to put out there that the mentally ill are people who may or may not be artistic, may or may not be geniuses, and all have a difficulty to overcome that isn't glamorous. And their experience is different, I would say, than the writer who hears voices, though I suppose someone prone to psychosis could also be a writer and get inspiration from their hallucinations. It wouldn't be all that different from those of us who get inspiration from our dreams.
In artistic circles, though, it’s not uncommon to hear people brag about having mental problems. One common one is the writer who has to write or they start to go a little loopy. What’s odd here is that I am actually one of those people, so I can attest: It’s not a sign of greatness. It’s an obsessive disorder (mine is very mild). In fact, I can’t help but laugh when someone tries to one up me on this. “Oh yeah? Well if I don’t write every day, I start pulling out my hair. I start talking to people who don’t exist and getting in fights.” I honestly don’t know what I’d do if I didn't satisfy my urge to write because… well, it’s a really easy urge to satisfy. Anyone who has gotten to the point that they pull out their hair or have delusions makes me wonder how they manage that. Do they not have pencils, pens, paper, a computer, crayons, steamy mirrors, dirty cars, gravel in the yard, or anything that they can write with or on? I’ll go so far as to say, they've got to be lying. The proof of my mild obsessive disorder is that I write an average of six days a week. I have no idea what would happen if I didn't because that would be really hard to do, and I wish this meant that I am therefore a great author, but it doesn't mean anything like that. Many authors better than I have admitted to me that they've taken years off from their craft with no ill effects.
So, I would argue that no one is so different from the average writer that they can’t get the general idea of what it’s like to hear character voices. Everyone creates in some way or another. Perhaps you don’t hear voices, but you can look at a barren garden and see rows of carrots and peas, or at cans of food and see a completed three course meal. That ability to visualize the next step is the same ability that writers use to write their stories, and just like everyone else, the exact way each of us goes about it differs.
I have a friend whose main character whispered the first line of her book series in her ear one day. I've never experienced anything like that. I, on the other hand, daydream constantly. Any time I can get away with it, I zone out and imagine my characters interacting, and if I don’t like the scene, I change something and run it again and again and again. Mine isn't as romantic as some. It just involves me looking like a space cadet much of the time. Some authors see their characters in other people, by picking and choosing characteristics and setting up situations. All of us, after we've been at it a while, have a very active fantasy life and spend a lot of time with people who don’t exist. My opinion, though, is that we live in an era of specialization. Some people specialize in building things, some adding things, some moving and shipping things, and some of us in imagination. Everyone imagines a little. Artists imagine a lot, all the time. It may make us a little quirky, but it won’t require medical attention, and some of us have mild disorders that add to our quirks, but that’s, again, a different matter entirely.
