Interview with Heidi Garrett and Billie Limpin, Authors of Cupcakes & Kisses

Cupcakes & Kisses

Cupcakes & Kisses by Heidi Garrett and Billie Limpin
Paperback, 352 pages
Expected publication: December 2, 2014

One bite of her luscious cupcakes and you just might fall in love…

Nineteen-year-old Glynna Balcora’s super power is baking. A young witch, she’s lived her entire life tucked away in the quaint city of Spokane, WA with her domineering aunt and sweetheart of a grandmother. It’s not an ideal situation. Although Glynna loves her grandmother dearly, and treasures the special times they spend in their magical greenhouse, Glynna’s aunt keeps her niece on a tight leash using threats of vague enemies.

Since Glynna graduated from high school a few a months ago, her aunt’s be-home-before-dark curfew seems more ridiculous every day. It isn’t doing much for the young witch’s social life, either. With encouragement from her best friend, Glynna sneaks out one night to go to a bonfire party at the lake. There she has an unexpected encounter with Spokane’s most eligible bachelor, Ashton Bass. Glynna’s been crushing on Ashton since she was five years old. But when they share their first kiss, thunderstorms and lightning follow… and Glynna’s aunt realizes it’s time to tell the young witch the truth about who she really is.

Cupcakes & Kisses is the first book in a playful New Adult Romance trilogy. Read my thoughts, posted yesterday, about this fabulous book here.

Today I have the extreme pleasure of having both of the authors of this fun series here at The Book Bag! I asked them a few questions about how they met and what it's like to write a story with someone else. The idea of writing a book is something that I cannot even comprehend. Kudos to authors! Writing by oneself would be challenging enough, let alone writing with someone else.

Hang on to your hats, everyone! You are in for a crazy, fun ride with this interview!

Welcome Heidi and Billie! First of all, how did you two meet?

HEIDI: We met on Goodreads. Yes, really. It was kind of… Fate. (Yes, with a capital “F”!) A strong wind from the Philippines blew across the South Pacific Ocean and then up to the Northwest coast of the U.S. Mmmm… It brought the scent of: CUPCAKES!!!

At what point did writing a book together come up?

HEIDI: Billie is an awesome book blogger. I asked/begged/pleaded with her to help with the blog tour of my first Once Upon a Time Today novella. She graciously offered to interview me. OMG! It was so fun. Here is an excerpt: WARNING: We went a little nuts, and as usual, threw proper grammar and punctuation out the window, cause sometimes: YOU JUST MUST!!!!

BILLIE: Oh! I did not anticipate that Ms. Heidi really did enjoy my interview that much and got… uhhhhmm a little carried away with words?!! (which, I should not be all too surprised because this Half Faerie really… really loves to talk (or write?!) like me?! Hehe. So, since my heart cannot take cutting or editing any part of our "little" chit-chats! May I present to you Part 1 of my LONGEST INTERVIEW EVER! Lol. Okaaaaaay… Now let’s get to know Ms. Heidi Garrett on a more personal… and uhmmm fun & interesting level? And see if she can take on my challenge: One Question = One Word Answer. Minimum words?! Oh, this will be VERY interesting!

See more at: Beautiful Beautiful Blog Tour : An Interview with Author Heidi Garrett - Part One

Then Billie asked question number three! What is your strongest… and uhmm, most attractive feature? (Oh?! Maybe I should ask your husband Jerry this question? Hehe.)

HEIDI: So, I asked Jerry. Cause, you know, I want to know what he says too. He says my sense of humor. (Not my beauty, sob! I’m such a girl, lol.) Anyway, I say: “Am I really that funny?” He makes a face, like I need to go do anything but answer these questions! But I persist! “Honey, is my sense of humor really that strong?????” (Me asking, like kind of desperate and whiny, cause I’m not sure that’s such a great thing! Like is it Sexy? or Romantic? or Swoony?)

He says, “Your sense of humor is different. I think a lot of people like it.”

Then I think of Bones and Booth (You know, of the TV show on Fox) and I think about how much they make me giggle and laugh, and then I think, you know, that’s kind of sexy and hot! Hmmm… I can make him laugh and smile, and when he does, his whole face lights up… Okay! I can live with that! (No divorce! Yay!) (We can continue our Happily Ever After:D)

So… AS YOU CAN IMAGINE, after this interview, I kept thinking about how Billie and I played off each other and how fun that was! I’d really never thought about writing a romance book before that. I write books with romance in them but not A Romance. But I kept reading Billie’s book reviews… ROMANCE!!!! And then I thought… what if we could write A Romance together? Would it be possible? Then I got kind of nervous. It’s probably like asking someone on a date: What if they say no? You hate that! What if I ask, and Billie thinks I’m crazy? Am I? Heehee. And I think, no. I’m not crazy, and if I don’t ask her, she can’t ever say YES. So I gathered my courage and sent Billie an email and my question: Do you want to write with me? Maybe a story about a sexy, sassy witch? was buried deep in a looooong email… Maybe she can’t find it? Then she can’t say NO! Uh-oh, but no YES, either. Bites nails.

Then I get a Billie’s reply, and it’s like a big HUGE PINK Yes.

So I guess she didn’t skip over that question, heehee. I think we were both over the moon at that point. Junar and Jerry had to reel us in;)

BILLIE: (Yes! I am still wearing PINK! Hee hee! ): Uhhhhmm, Excuse me, for interrupting… but helloooooo?!!!! Who am I to say NOOOOOO to that once-in-a-lifetime offer?????!! Did you know that I jumped up and down, down and up *on repeat* when I received that EPIC email?! I have to read it TEN times just to be sure I am not having one of my… uhm, PINK daydreams?! So, I read it… OH eM Gee! “Do you want to write with me?” Me: Whooopie!! *Jumps up and down, Down and Up on repeat!* See? I am NOT really excited! LOL.

THAT… is the beginning of the “FUN-NEST” (Yes! my word for Fun! Fun! Fun! To the MAX!) writing experience I had with Ms. Heidi!

I enjoyed that little interview I did with Heidi as much as she did. I guess, I love to make people not only smile but giggle or blush? Oh, I think Heidi blushed! Well, you know Heidi‘s a little… “serious” Oh! See? Did you just raise your left eyebrow, Miss Heidi?! Haha! I thought, that maaaaybeee if I “Tickle” her a bit with my, well, not-so-serious questions, she’ll… loosen up? Ohhhh! Don’t give me that look, Ms. Heidi! You DID loosen up? I swear, you giggled? Oh, are you laughing?! MISSION ACCOMPLISHED. LOL.

How did the process itself work? Did you write alternate chapters?

HEIDI: I decided up front: Billie is in charge of romance. She also took over names, heehee… Ashton, Tatiana, Lorriene, Leif… and don’t forget Archimedes! Awesome names. I think she came up with Glynna’s name too, but our heroine’s final name, came out of a typo… I think:) There are four BIG ROMANCE scenes. Billie wrote the first draft of each one. Plus, she wrote a lot of the first scene with Ashton and Lorriene!

We had two secret weapons when it came to developing our characters and our plot. (Should we share them? Hmmm… maybe we should keep them TOP SECRET!!!) Facebook Chat and our Super-Senstive-Carefully-Guarded Pink Collaboration document!

BILLIE: Secret Weapons huh?! Oh Don’t forget, Miss Heidi… Our PINK SPELL! Susan, We are PINK witches… ssshhhhh… that’s a well kept secret… *whispers*… and now we are casting our “fool-proof-all-goodness” woodoo-voodoo! *whoosh whoosh* NOW… you are under our SPELL… everything we say, YOU agree.

… Our cupcakes are yum yum? YOU nod.

… Our book is… mmmm… yum yum? YOU (still) nod. Oh! You nod!! See?! You have just been spelled!

Okay, I need to be “ serious” for once!!! Because Miss Heidi’s giving me “ The Look”! Heehee!

The truth is, I am so thankful for the INTERNET! Though, mine here is soooo turtle slow… snail slowwwww… Slowww… sloooooow… but that did not stop us from passing our PINK draft back and forth… until, we’re at the last chapter! It’s like, Poof! Magic?!

Talk about the logistics of making it a seamless story.

HEIDI: Ooh… That’s one of those things:) There is a magic when Billie and I pass back-and-forth a written document. She writes something and I’m like: OMG… I have to play off that. Then I write something, and she has to add something special… make it bubble! Other than that, it’s about the same as any book. The writing itself has to be revised for mechanics and continuity after the first draft is written. Our editor, Vince Dickinson also played a significant role in putting on the final polish.

BILLIE : Agree with everything Heidi said. I think we, working together, just clicked. We’re “writing soul mates”. Heidi inspired me to push more… that I can do more, and I learned a lot.

Writing with her is not like “writing” at all. It’s like, we are conversing/talking to each other as good friends. And you know what’s the best part? We can goof around, have fun (talk a lot about cupcakes and all the sweetest goodies!)… and yes! No pressure whatsoever. We go where that flow takes us.

Would you do it again? I know this is to be a trilogy, so it must be working.

HEIDI: Yes, we will be doing it again when we write Cupcakes & Chaos!

Oh YES!! I agree with everything you said! And I now have this crazy compulsion to like PINK!

Thank you both so much for being here today and answering my questions. I understand now why I loved this book so much. Your wonderful senses of humor and the way you two just gel together in your craziness comes across in the book and make for a great read. I look forward to reading more of this fabulous series!

My thoughts about Cupcakes & Kisses ~~

What can I say? I love everything about this book and I can't wait to read more!

I have come to know Heidi (virtually, anyway) and I love her stories and her writing style. She makes those words just flow off of the pages. When I saw that she had this wonderful, new series in the works, I just knew I had to read it. Also, I am a huge cover lover and how can you not just love this cover? I know I do. And then the story is about a young woman who bakes magical cupcakes, how awesome is that! Throw in a little witchery, both good witches and bad, and you have the makings of a fun, delightful, and very entertaining story.
'Light is always more powerful than dark, if you believe.'
I love Glynna and her innocence. At nineteen, she starts to learn things, about herself and her family, that have been kept from her and these thing are rocking her world.
'We're forbidden to mate, but that's not why we don't. The truth is we're not attracted to each other. We Luminas are drawn to love and beauty, truth and justice, dignity and peace. Occultos crave domination, violence, destruction and hate.'
And did I mention the magical cupcakes? Those parts were so fun. What if that could really happen - baking cupcakes and pies that can affect people's moods?
'What did you put in that batch of lemon-raspberry cupcakes? They're delicious, but everyone who's had one is in the mood to kill, including us.'
Cupcakes & Kisses was such a joy to read with a fun concept and great characters. I can't wait to see where the next book takes me.
"I've been such a fool to believe that happily ever-afters happen in real life.'
Oh, and you really need to go check out The Magic Cupcake Facebook page. It is filled with yummy cupcakes and they are doing a chapter count-up -- giving us a peek at a chapter a day. It is so much fun to go back and relive the story each day.

Stop back tomorrow for my interview with Heidi and Billie. They will be talking about how they met and what it was like writing this series together.

Excerpt

“Hey, watch it.” A dark figure looms in front of me. With the bonfire behind him, his face is all shadows, but the voice sounds vaguely familiar.

“Oh, sorry,” I yelp. “I didn’t mean—”

“To give me a shower?” The guy offers an amused smile.

My throat catches. Ashton Bass is standing in front of me. I’m too embarrassed to meet his gaze, so my eyes travel south. He’s wearing a dark fitted t-shirt with three white buttons at the top. God. I can’t believe I’m counting the buttons on his shirt. Or that I gave him a beer shower.

I glance around for a stack of napkins, a roll of paper towels, anything to dry him off. I find nothing. Desperate, I try to wipe off the spray with my bare hands... Huh? I press with one finger. No give. None. When did Ashton get wash-board abs? I slide my finger down. One… two… three… eight?! Eight?! Not even Leif has an eight-pack, and he’s a brick wall. I freeze. I can’t believe it. I’m actually counting his abs. My gaze travels back up only to be trapped by Aston’s startling azure eyes—and his famous panty-dropping boyish grin.

“Oops!! So-sorrry,” I stammer, and take a step backwards. “Not sure what that was all about.” His eyes will not let go of mine as the warm feelings heating my insides build. In fact, they’ll betray me, shortly, if I don’t watch out.

“Oh, I don’t mind at all. Besides, you seemed to be enjoying yourself.” His white teeth shine in the moonlight as another blush-fest attacks by face. Thank god, it’s the middle of the night and not the middle of the day.

“You have to forgive my friend, Ashton. She doesn’t get out much. And, well, her encounters with the male chest have been severely limited.”

Kristeen’s intervention is no help at all, and I don’t miss the lingering look she gives Ashton’s well-toned chest. A bitter pinch grips my heart as I imagine strangling my BFF.

Oh. God. Of. Cupcakes! My emotions are totally out-of-control. “Kristeen!” I half-whisper, half-scream.

“No?” Ashton’s one-word question leaves his lopsided grin firmly in place.

This is becoming all shades of awkward. I squeeze my eyes shut. I’d give anything for a cupcake that could make me disappear after just one bite. Boy! That would be some recipe.

How I wish, wish, wish my magical abilities went beyond baking. Way beyond.

“No worries.”

I open one eye. Ashton’s grin has grown, if that’s possible. His perfect white teeth gleam in the firelight. I open my other eye. He brushes his hand over his forearms and shirt. “Just glad to see you out, Glynna.”

“You can thank me,” Kristeen says.

“Thank you, Krissy.”

“Please, everyone stopped calling me that in elementary school.”

Ashton digs around in one of the ice chests. “Sorry, didn’t mean to offend.” He hands me a wine cooler. “This might be more to your taste.”

“Thanks,” I mumble.

He grabs a couple more bottles of beer and gives each of us a half bow. “Enjoy the party, ladies.”

He walks away, backwards, smiling, firelight reflecting from those perfect chops. He must have his teeth whitened regularly because no one’s teeth are naturally that bright. When his left foot sinks into a low spot, his whole body dips, and he almost falls. Almost.

“Nice recovery,” Kristeen whispers.

I nod. Whenever Ashton Bass is within twenty yards of me, my tongue ties in knots and my heart races pell mell around my ribcage.

Genre: Adult Contemporary Fairy Tale novella
Release date: November 15th, 2013

Movie director Kerrin Mayham has an eye for beauty. Now her years of struggling on the indie film circuit are about to pay off. She's the frontrunner to win Golden Pinnacle's Director of the Year. Winning will mean generous financial backing for her next project, and the most bankable actors in the industry are already signaling interest in the leading role. How will she decide which Adonis is right for the part of Demion Glass?

In this contemporary retelling of the eponymous Hans Christian Anderson fairy tale, Kerrin's journey leads her to discover a deeper meaning of beauty.

Beautiful Beautiful, a contemporary fairytale novella, is the first release in Heidi Garrett's new Once Upon a Time Today collection. (Adult language & situations, no explicit sex)

My thoughts about Beautiful Beautiful ~~

I have read other books by Heidi and I love her stories. She is a fabulous writer with a wonderful imagination which allows her to create beautiful and exciting worlds for her characters to live in. I was entranced with her Queen of the Realm of Faerie series so was super excited to see that she was putting her spin on the fairy tales of old.

I love how, in Beautiful Beautiful, a fairy tale is woven into a story from the present so that the reader gets a sense of how the fairy tales relate to what is happening now. Kerrin tells her daughter bedtime stories which mirror her life stories as a way to teach her daughter life lessons.

'Kerrin had discovered a creative way to pass meaningful lessons from her life to her daughter, and Mibi cherished the opportunity to reshape the tale, each time it was told by asking questions and interjecting her own opinions and commentary.'

I love reading fairy tales and loved reading Heidi's version of this one. I look forward to reading the rest of this series. Here are some more quotes that I love.

"I'm going to be the only person on the planet who doesn't have any troubles!" Mibi announced.
"But if you ever do --"
"Mommy, I'll remember to look for something beautiful."
***********
"No, it was the Wicked Witch if Iowa."
(Tee hee hee - growing up in Nebraska, this was extra funny to me.)

***********
'What good are magic shoes and a fairy godmother if they can't save you from a witch?'
***********
'As long as you believe.'

On Tour, an Excerpt and a Giveaway: True Love's First Kiss by Heidi Garrett

In the Enchanted World, true love’s first kiss is magic.

Nandana’s Mark, Book 1: When two half-faeries—Melia and her younger sister—are cursed under dreadful circumstances, true love’s first kiss is the remedy.

The Flower of Isbelline, Book 2: Nothing but true love’s first kiss can save Melia’s younger sister from blind ambition and ruin.

The Dragon Carnivale, Book 3: Melia must choose the freedom she cherishes or true love’s first kiss—and a relationship that promises to secure her place in the Whole.

The Queen of the Realm of Faerie is a fantasy fairy tale series that bridges the Mortal and Enchanted worlds. The main character, Melia, is an eighteen-year-old half-faerie, half-mortal. She lives in Illialei, a country in the Enchanted World, with her two sisters and their mother. Melia’s father has been exiled to the Mortal World, and her best friend is a pixie.

When the story opens in the first book, Melia is troubled by her dark moon visions, gossip she overhears about her parents at the local market, and the trauma of living among full-blooded faeries with wings—she doesn’t have any.

As the series unfolds, the historic and mystical forces that shape Melia’s life are revealed. Each step of her journey—to find the place where she belongs—alters her perceptions about herself, deepens her relationships with others, and enlarges her world view.

True Love’s First Kiss is a compilation of the first three books in this ongoing series.

Release date: July 8th 2013
Self-published
Purchase: Amazon

My thoughts about True Love's First Kiss ~~

Ahhh.... another enchanted world to get lost in for a time. Faerie books (I hope that's the right term) are a genre that I am just beginning to discover. (So many books, so little time.... again.) And I loved the journey I just took into this Enchanted World.

It took me a little bit to wrap my head around all the magical happenings and ideas floating and flying around but once I just let my imagination flow with the words, I was totally swept up in the adventure and magic of the story.

The main character, Melia, was immediately likable and I loved following her path to make things right in the World. She has some great friends and supporters along the way who add so much to the adventure. I love the idea of pixies, trolls, and men morphing into tigers. I feel like I am rediscovering my imagination again.

Heidi writes a wonderful story with a lot twists and turn, obstacles that have to be overcome, and exciting adventures. I loved getting lost in these three stories and read them back to back. I am super excited to see what comes next. Like I said, I am just discovering the fae world, and these were a great introduction to that world.

And aren't the covers of the three books just beautiful?

Excerpt
"The stronghold is an extension of Elenda herself, it embodies her consciousness," he said.
Melia pressed her fingers to her lip as she again compared the stronghold to the Cathedral Palace in Illialei.
"Then she's different from the Albiana queens. To appear so plain from a distance yet, have such a remarkable interior..."
"Elenda's story is fascinating." Sinjiin said. "Do you know it?"
"No."
"She was a fondling, adrift in the Great White Sea. A seagull rescued her and carried her here to Faerie. An old woman no one had ever seen in these parts before cared for her. When Elenda was nineteen, her caregiver vanished. She was left alone, the sole grey faerie in these lands."
"How sad." Melia said.
"For years, she wandered the barren shores of Tyrannis and the Ruadian Mountains. When she climbed this mountain - the highest one - she fell in love with the closeness to the sea. Over time, the stronghold built itself around her, brick by brick, stone by stones."
Melia's eyes stretched wide.
"There's not a stonecutter, bricklayer, or mason in the entire Whole that will lay claim to the work.: Sinjiin said.
"I didn't realize her magic was so powerful." Melia said.
"Not magic." Sinjiin tapped his chest. "Desire."
"The magic of powerful desire doesn't require props, or potions, or even spells - rabbit's tails, turtle's feet, a raven's beak - all are unnecessary. When the power that eminates from within us is strong enough, it flows outward. The ability to manifest what is inside of us into the exterior world is the greatest magic of all."

Why Do I Write Fantasy? or You Never Know Who Might Show Up at Your Front Door
By Heidi Garrett
As long as I can remember, I've been obsessed with the truths that my physical senses cannot explain: the mystical things occurring on this planet. Writing fantastical stories is my testament to these other layers of reality.
There are many ways of looking at our world. Imagine sitting at home, perhaps in your living room. There’s a knock on the door. When you open it, a funny little woman is standing there. She is about half your height, and a plaid crimson kerchief—knotted under her hooked chin—covers her head. Her dress is sack-like over her square body. She’s wearing an apron that could use a good ironing and she’s carrying a battered brown suitcase that’s almost as big as she is.
“As long as you’re staring, a glass of water would be nice,” she says.
Despite her gruff manner, you sense something mysterious about this stranger, and to be honest, you’re dying to know more about her. When she crosses the threshold of your home, a strong wind slams the door behind her. You both jump. There hasn't been a breeze all day. In fact, it’sweltering and heat waves have been rising from the melting pavement for weeks.
When you offer it, she almost grabs the glass from your hand, and you can’t stop your staring—even though you know it’s rude—as she drinks in noisy gulps.
“What? You've never seen a spring faerie before?” she asks.
Before you can answer, she wipes her mouth with the back of her hand. “Guess not, there aren't many of us left. And I haven’t been to the Mortal World, since…”
She stops. Her deeply etched face softens. Something like sorrow pools in her dark brown eyes. She waves her hand. “That’s not what I’m here to talk about.”
Your heart tugs. You want to pull her from that sad place. “What’s in your suitcase?”
She points to the table. “I’ll show you.”
The suitcase is filled with eyeglasses. There are so many. Some have square black frames, others have round wire frames; there are a few speckled frames with octagonal lenses. You spy a pair of purple ones.
She shoves a pair of thick black glasses into your hand. “Put these on. Tell me what you see.”
With the eyeglasses settled on the bridge of your nose, you can’t see anything but yourself. You blink. You can see your hands and feet, your legs and toes. But the spring faerie—if that’s really what she is—is just a blur. You pull them off. She trades them for a pair of wire rims. With these glasses you can see her and your home.
“What’s your name?” you ask.
“Flora.”
“Like flowers blooming.”
She nods and looks away with that whiff of sadness.
Again, there is something about her that pulls at your heart. You think of the miracle of spring after a long hard winter, and that she shouldn't be sad—if she really is a spring faerie.
“But...you don’t have any wings,” you say.
She smoothes the wrinkles in her apron. “Not all faeries do.”
“But—”
She almost jerks the wire-rim spectacles from your nose. You reach for that purple pair. She doesn't stop you. Now, you can see down the street; your eyes travel the highway. Your view elevates, as if you are a bird. Soon you see the entire city you live in. With each pair of glasses, you see the bigger world.
When Flora tucks the temple arms of a pair of red frames behind your ears, perspective zooms around you. It’s like the lens pulls you into outer space, and you can see the entire world and all the billions of people who live on Earth.
Your heart flutters in your chest; it’s a lot to take in.
“Now—” Flora hands you a pair of fuchsia glasses with tiny rhinestones embedded in the frames. “Try on these.”
When you put them on, you’re able to see beyond the physical entirety of the world into the things that you've always known exist, but since you can’t see, touch, smell, or hear them, sometimes you've doubted. But you’ll never doubt again, because now—with these special glasses—you can actually see the bonds of love that death can never sever, the strings of fate that wrap the brown paper package of all our lives with twine, the tide of time that alters us, even as we never change...
But most importantly, you've seen that you belong here, on this planet. And you know—without a shadow of a doubt—that everything fits. Including you.
“I don’t ever want to take these glasses off,” you say.
Flora is already cramming the rest of them back into her bag. “Then don’t.”
The Queen of the Realm of Faerie is a fairy tale fantasy series that bridges the Mortal and Enchanted worlds. The main character, Melia, is an eighteen-year-old half-faerie, half-mortal. She lives in Illialei, a country in the Enchanted World, with her two sisters and their mother. Melia’s father has been exiled to the Mortal World, and her best friend is a pixie.

When the story opens in the first book, Melia is troubled by her dark moon visions, gossip she overhears about her parents at the local market, and the trauma of living among full-blooded faeries with wings—she doesn't have any.

As the series unfolds, the historic and mystical forces that shape Melia’s life are revealed. Each step of her journey—to find the place where she belongs—alters her perceptions about herself, deepens her relationships with others, and enlarges her world view.

In The Dragon Carnivale, book 3 of The Queen of the Realm of Faerie, energies in the Enchanted World are shifting and new alliances are forming; the Battle of Dark and Light has begun. Melia is desperate to make things right with Ryder, the young priest from Idonne, but first she must warn the half-bloods in the Mortal World that Umbra is coming for them, and face the powerful Dragonwitch and her spectacular Dragon Carnivale.

The first two books in the series: Nandana’s Mark and The Flower of Isbelline are currently available at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, iBooks, Kobo, and Smashwords.

Nandana’s Mark is free.

The Dragon Carnivale is scheduled for a June 18, 2013, release.
