Heart Conditions by Phoebe Fox
Series: The Breakup Doctor #3
Paperback and e-book, 278 pages
Published: February 9th 2016 by Henery Press

Breakup Doctor Brook Ogden has spent the last year sifting through the fallout from the disastrous decision that led to her unconscious uncoupling with boyfriend Ben Garrett. Despite advising her clients you can’t be friends with an ex, she and Ben have somehow begun to stitch together a friendship—one Brook hopes is slowly turning into more. That is, until Ben introduces his new girlfriend, Perfect Pamela, a paragon of womanly virtues who is everything Brook is not.

While Brook navigates her newly volatile emotional life, an unwelcome surprise shows up on her doorstep: the ex-fiancĂ© who broke her heart two years ago—one month before their wedding. Between her ex’s desire to rekindle their attachment, her best friend Sasha’s unexpected crisis, and her own unsquelchable feelings for Ben, Brook finds herself questioning the personal progress she’s made in the last two years—and threatened with the highest-stakes Breakup Doctor failures she’s ever faced.

My thoughts about Heart Conditions ~~

Just when I thought Brook's life couldn't get more complicated, her ex-fiance reenters her life and wants a second chance to regain what they supposedly had.

'Walking out on you was the best thing I ever did.'

What?? How do you come back and say that to someone you had professed to love? And then there's Sasha, Brook's best friend. I love her and the depth of her friendship. She has no qualms about telling Michael what she thinks of him and what she will do to him if he hurts Brook again. She's got her best friend's back! We should all have a best friend like that.

I laughed out loud at the part where they end up at a party where half of the adults there were wearing diapers. I was not expecting this to happen in the story and it cracked me up. It is amazing the level of support those two friends have for each other.

And Brook burned bridges with the guy I thought/hoped she would end up with. Ben falls for 'Perfect Pamela'. I loved this nickname that Brook gave to Ben's new girlfriend! Haven't we all felt that way when a loved one moves on to someone else, 'they must be perfect'?

'Ben's girlfriend was the kind of woman you never, ever want the ex you still have very complicated feelings for—despite the fact that it was you who torpedoed the relationship—to date.''

I loved the first two books in this series and I loved going back to check up on Brook in book #3. One of the great things about this series is the growth and change we see in each of the characters. The books are not just the same old, same old where the characters aren't learning from their mistakes. They actually move forward with their lives and relationships change.

I can't wait for the next installment from the Breakup Doctor!

Release Day! Bedside Manners (Breakup Doctor #2) by Phoebe Fox and a Giveaway!

Release Day!

Bedside Manners

Bedside Manners by Phoebe Fox
Series: Breakup Doctor #2
Print and e-book, 266 pages
Expected publication: March 24th 2015 by Henery Press

Brook Ogden has never encountered a broken heart she couldn’t patch together. Her counseling practice as the Breakup Doctor—on call to help you shape up after a breakup—is so busy she’s expanded to offer group sessions. (Turns out there are far more than fifty ways to leave your lover.) Her radio show and advice column have made her a local celebrity, and even her personal life, after some gruesome breakups of her own, is in recovery: Ben Garrett started out as a revenge date against an ex, but has turned into so much more.

But when sizzling-hot Chip Santana, an old client she once shared a rather unprofessional midnight roll in the sand with, comes back into her life asking for her help, Brook can’t say no. Yet while she’s busy stitching up his relationship troubles, Chip reveals much more than a therapeutic interest in her.

In the standoff between her heart and her hormones, Brook’s cool, collected Wise Therapist persona begins to crack like thrown wedding china. She’s yelling at recalcitrant cheating husbands. Offering crazy advice to radio callers. She’s even hugging her clients.

When the situation goes critical, Brook’s forced into a decision she isn’t ready to make—and the Breakup Doctor has to decide what kind of casualties she’s willing to accept.

My thoughts about Bedside Manners ~~

I loved book #1, The Breakup Doctor and was so excited to see that there was going to be a book #2. Bedside Manners is a great follow-up that takes us back to Brook's world, where we get to learn even more about her life.

Brook is a very likable character and she has a great sense of humor, a very gentle kind of humor, which we get to see throughout the story. She decides to start a support group for people with relationship problems. Those sessions were some of the best parts of the book - what great characters and situations! Brook dispenses such great advice and words of wisdom throughout the book.
'"I've fought some of the same battles a lot of you are facing," I went on. "And I still am, and I'll probably fight more in the future. But this last time through the wringer I learned that you can't keep it all bottled up - you have to let it out. And you can't do it alone - you have to be brave enough to share it with people who care about you. You have to let yourself be vulnerable enough to accept help. I hope that's part of what we're able to offer one another as we work through our situations in here."'
She is great at helping people and giving them good advice but she is human, and stuggles with relationships in her own life. She is torn between Chip and Ben and watching the struggle between her heart and hormones makes this story loads of fun.
'I could help people. But there were only so many hours in a day - and I still had to leave time for a life of my own, or I'd have nothing to offer anyone else.'
I loved that Brook grew as a person in this story as she learned so much about herself, as well as helping other people figure themselves out. I really hope we will get to see more of Brook in the future, she has so much to teach us all.
'... sometimes you have to get a little crazy to move past a broken heart...'

About the author

I love that Phoebe shares her 'official' bio with us but then also shares the 'real stuff' about herself. It made me smile.

The official bio:  Phoebe Fox has been a contributor and regular columnist for a number of national, regional, and local publications; a movie, theater, and book reviewer; a screenwriter; an actress; and a game show host; and has even been known to help with homework revisions for nieces and nephews. She lives in Austin, Texas, with her husband and two excellent dogs.

The bio I’d tell you over coffee and doughnuts: My earliest memories are words: sounding them out with the characters on The Electric Company and Sesame Street; trying to decipher signs as my mom drove me and my brother and sister around town; using (and misusing) new words I’d seen in magazines or advertisements or on TV. The first failure I remember is blowing the third-grade spelling bee when I got to the finals (“analyze”—I spelled it with an i instead of a y). Words and language have fascinated me as long as I can remember—and even more so, the worlds that can be created with them. Nearly every childhood picture of me shows me with my nose in a book. Stories were my sanctuary, my fantasy life, my dreams, and my escape from childhood sorrows. As I got older, I realized that what I loved most was reading about people, and how they think, what they do, and why. Shoot-’em-ups didn't grab me, and neither did mysteries or thrillers or horror. I wanted to examine people’s actions, and the psychology behind why we do what we do, and when I started writing (another earliest memory—as soon as I knew how, I had a pen in my hand), those were the kinds of tales I wanted to create.

The Breakup Doctor by Phoebe Fox and a Giveaway!

The Breakup Doctor

The Breakup Doctor by Phoebe Fox
Series: The Breakup Doctor Series #1
Paperback and e-book, 310 pages
Published June 10th 2014 by Henery Press

Call Brook Ogden a matchmaker-in-reverse. Let others bring people together; Brook, licensed mental health counselor, picks up the pieces after things come apart. When her own therapy practice collapses, she maintains perfect control: landing on her feet with a weekly advice-to-the-lovelorn column and a successful consulting service as the Breakup Doctor: on call to help you shape up after you breakup.

But when her own relationship suddenly crumbles, Brook finds herself engaging in almost every bad-breakup behavior she preaches against. And worse, she starts a rebound relationship with the most inappropriate of men: a dangerously sexy bartender with anger-management issues—who also happens to be a former patient.

As her increasingly out-of-control behavior lands her at rock-bottom, Brook realizes you can’t always handle a messy breakup neatly—and that sometimes you can’t pull yourself together until you let yourself fall apart.

My thoughts about The Breakup Doctor ~~

Okay, so I have to admit, when I saw this cover, I was thinking this was going to be a fun chick-lit type of story. It would be pretty predictible and a fun read. The Breakup Doctor is so much more than that. It is the story of Brook's journey down a new career path after the clinic she is working in closes. She sort of stumbles into a job writing a relationship column and becomes the Breakup Doctor, giving advice to readers, acquaintances, and eventually clients, as they go through their rough spots. But it is also a wonderful look at all kinds of relationships; parents and children, best friends, lovers, you name it.
'I was styling myself as a confindent, knowledgeable relationship expert, and here I was craving resassurance like a child.'
Brook has a wonderful best friend, Sasha, who she counsels and tries to keep from making a fool of herself when she gets dumped. When a breakup happens to Brook, can she take her own advice and keep her self-respect? Or is she going to be just like everyone else, and go a little nuts?
'Don't drink and dial, and don't drink and email.' Great advice, Brook!
It was wonderful, and sometimes a little frustrating, to see the antics that Brook attempted, all in the name of love when she was supposed to know better. But you know what, she is only human, just like the rest of us. And her feelings are just as real as anyone elses.
'..somehow I had to figure out how to advise someone else on their own broken relationship when I was proving to be such a complete failure at handling my own.'
Like I said, this story turned out to be so much more than I was expecting. It was entertaining and humorous in places, as well as touching on more serious and deeper relationship topics. It was very enjoyable to read and I truly came to care about Brook and her life. I especially loved the relationship that Brook and Sasha had. They seemed to always be there for each other. When it was needed, one of them could be the strong, wise one when the other one was struggling and doing stupid stuff. They had each other's back. What a great friendship!

And did you see that this is book #1 is The Breakup Doctor series? Whoo hoo! I am so excited that I will be able to go back to see what Brook and Sasha are up to. I can't wait to visit them again!
