The Lovers

The Lovers by Karen Amanda Hooper
Series: Virtual Arcana #6
Published: ??

The final episode in Season 1 the VIRTUAL ARCANA series. The series starts with book 0: The Fool.

In a faraway future, Kelsey Zellar is starting her senior year at yet another school thanks to her twin sister’s troublesome obsession with outlawed virtual reality games.

Every school they’ve ever attended is pretty much the same: lunchroom drama, rich kids binging on enhancement candies, and classmates rallying for or against the government’s strict control over everything from entertainment privileges to caffeine consumption.

Unlike her sister, Kelsey follows the rules and keeps her nose out of trouble and politics while sniffing out her next flavored latte and favorite novel. But when Kelsey meets a charming book connoisseur in a coffee shop parking lot, and accepts his offering of a tarot card, she takes the first step toward two new addictions: the guy of her dreams, and his illegal dealing of virtual escapes into her beloved storybooks.

Kelsey straddles the worlds of fiction and reality, but is she a fool for believing in her own happy ending?

My thoughts about The Lovers ~~

What a perfect ending to this season! Just enough questions answered to be satisifying, but then a whole bunch more rose to the top to keep me wanting more. I don't want to give too much away but I loved how Karen incorporated some additional characters into the story. What happened there?? I can't wait for season two to discover how this all plays out!!

My thoughts about The Emperor ~~

I love this series and love the mystery of the story! What is real and what is not real? Who are the good guys and who are the bad guys? Whew!! It's hard to keep up.

'Sorting out dreams, VR, and reality felt like an impossible task that my aching head couldn't handle anymore.'

Karen has kept my interest going in this serial by giving me just enough information with each episode to keep me moving forward with the plot but by also giving me new and different questions that need to be answered. I have to keep reading and I can't wait for the next one!

'I'll give it time if you explain why everything is such a mental hodgepodge for me.'

My thoughts about The Empress ~~

I am always so excited when I get the next, newest episode of the Virtual Arcana series. I drop whatever I am reading and dive right in. I know it's not going to take very long to read. And it has been a little while since the last episode. I miss being in that world and can't wait to get back to it.

The Empress episode is pretty intense this time with Kelsey sneaking out late at night and breaking laws. Will this put her family in more hot water than they are already in? We also see the relationship between Kelsey and Xander grow deeper. But that relationship is another thing that could mean serious trouble for Kelsey and her family.

This episode seemed to be a turning point for me. I felt confused through the first few epsiodes but I think now that it was a reflection of the confusion that Kelsey was feeling as she was trying to figure out all that was being thrown at her. She is coming around to understanding and figuring out what she is supposed to do and how things work. I am able to relax a little bit and enjoy the story that Karen is putting out there. I can't wait to see where the story goes from here.

My thoughts about The High Priestess ~~

This story continues to intrigue me. Yes, it is a bit confusing trying to wrap my head around what is happening to Kelsey and what is expected of her. But I trust the author to bring the story around and it will all make sense in the end.

'The more she explained, the more lost I felt.'

I kind of felt the same way sometimes, the more that happened, the more confused I became, not knowing what was real and what was not.

'You aren't able to see the whole picture yet, and he can't tell you what's real. You must seek reality deep within you.'

I am beginning to think that this may be the kind of story that I will be reading again when I'm done. It will all make sense on the second read, I'll see the whole picture then. But I really do love how this series is developing.

'You've heard of wormholes, right?' 'Similar concept. Except story-holes take you from this world into fictional ones.'

Wouldn't that be awesome?

The Magician

Virtual Arcana 1

The Magician by Karen Amanda Hooper

Series: Virtual Arcana Book 1

ebook

Expected publication: November 15th, 2014

The second book in the VIRTUAL ARCANA series.

The series starts with book 0: The Fool.

Mysterious cards keep appearing in Kelsey’s life, stirring up questions and forcing her to keep secrets from her sister, Keekee.

Triggered by Kelsey’s fear and Keekee's worry, the twins become bright blips on their tyrannical government’s radar.

Xander’s magic seems to be their only chance at escaping a dangerous confrontation, but is Kelsey willing to break multiple laws and finally step into Xander's illegal world of virtual reality?

My thoughts about The Magician ~~

The second book in the Virtual Arcana series picks right up where book one ended. We are thrown back into Kelsey's world where things don't make sense. And figuring out who and what is right or wrong is a tough thing to figure out.

Should Kelsey listen to Xander and go against everything she has been brought up to believe is right? Or should she fight against those same beliefs because they just don't make sense to her?

"No, Kelsey Zellar. I won't change your band back to normal. Because you are not normal. You are extraordinary. And extraordinary people shouldn't be imprioned by a tyrannical government."

Poor Kelsey, it seems that she's damned if she does, and damned if she doesn't. She and her family could be killed no matter what path they choose to take.

"Follow your instincts," Xander reminded me. "They'll never lead you in the wrong direction."

And then the reader is left with more questions and another card that needs explaining, just when the story ends. I can't wait for the next episode!
