Release Day! The Sisters of Book Row by Shelley Noble ~ My Thoughts #TheSistersOfBookRow

Happy Release Day!

Congratulations Shelley
on the release today of
The Sisters of Book Row!

The Sisters of Book Row by Shelley Noble
Historical Fiction, Books about Books, 384 pages
Published March 3, 2026 by William Morrow Paperbacks

A thrilling and timely historical novel of books, banning, and the women who helped save New York’s famed Book Row, from bestselling author Shelley Noble.

1915: Manhattan’s Book Row, an eclectic jumble of forty bookshops along Fourth Avenue, is the mecca for rare book buyers from around the world, and the haunt of locals looking for a bargain. It is also the target of the most vicious censor in American history—Anthony Comstock.

And home to three sisters who vow to stop him.

For the three Applebaum sisters, the narrow, four-storied Arcadia Rare Bookshop is the only home they’ve ever known. Olivia, the oldest, is an expert in restoring rare manuscripts. Daphne, the outgoing middle sister, oversees the retail shop and is a favorite with their customers. Celia, the youngest, is left to dust and catalogue, but often sneaks out to do heaven knows what. Little do her sisters know, Celia has joined a group of young people who secretly print and distribute articles on women’s health by hiding them within the pages of ordinary cookbooks, household hints, and sewing patterns, despite the personal risk.

Meanwhile, the Comstock Laws threaten anybody who owns or circulates “obscene, lewd, or lascivious” publications. Even classic literature or fine art could send a person to jail. In the face of such oppression, Celia and the booksellers of Book Row band together. But secrets and a mysterious stranger mean the fate of the famed Book Row is anything but secure.

My thoughts about The Sisters of Book Row ~~

(I love to note the first lines of the books I'm reading. First lines can really grab a reader's attention and I love seeing where the author takes the reader after their first line.)

First lines—"A breeze dances among the leaves of the olive trees that cast their shade over the walled courtyard."

I went into this story not knowing anything about it or about the events that took place during this specific time period. The cover that was filled with books is what drew me in.

Three sisters, each different in her own way, are left to run their family-owned bookstore after their father passes away. Times are tough and each sister has her own agenda and idea of the life she wants to live. I was struck by how different each sister was from the others and how they all wanted unique things out of life. As troubling events were thrown at them, they learned about what and who were important and how they could all manage to be happy.

I really enjoyed The Sisters of Book Row and learned a lot about Anthony Comstock, the Comstock Laws, and the threat all of that was to small booksellers and the rights of the common people. The writing was superb which made for a very enthralling story. Highly recommend it!

I received a ARC of The Sisters of Book Row and this is my honest opinion.

New Release! The Fourth Princess by Janie Chang ~ My Thoughts #TheFourthPrincess

Congratulations Janie
on the recent release of
The Fourth Princess!

The Fourth Princess: A Gothic Novel of Old Shanghai  by Janie Chang
Historical Fiction, China, 336 pages
Published February 10, 2026 by William Morrow Paperbacks

From the internationally bestselling author of The Porcelain Moon comes a haunting Gothic novel set in 1911 China. Two young women living in a crumbling, once-grand Shanghai mansion face danger as secrets of their pasts come to light, even as the mansion’s own secret threatens the present.

Shanghai, 1911. Lisan Liu is elated when she is hired as secretary to wealthy American Caroline Stanton, the new mistress of Lennox Manor on the outskirts of Shanghai’s International Settlement. However, the Manor has a dark past due to a previous owner’s suicide, and soon Lisan’s childhood nightmares resurface with more intensity and meld with haunted visions of a woman in red. Adding to her unease is the young gardener, Yao, who both entices and disturbs her.

Newly married Caroline looks forward to life in China with her husband, Thomas, away from the shadows of another earlier tragedy. But an unwelcome guest, Andrew Grey, attends her party and claims to know secrets she can’t afford to have exposed. At the same party, the notorious princess Masako Kyo approaches Lisan with questions about the young woman’s family that the orphaned Lisan can’t answer.

As Caroline struggles with Grey’s extortion and Thomas’s mysterious illness, Lisan’s future is upended when she learns the truth about her past, and why her identity has been hidden all these years. All the while, strange incidents accelerate, driving Lisan to doubt her sanity as Lennox Manor seems unwilling to release her until she fulfills demands from beyond the grave.

My thoughts about The Fourth Princess~~

(I love to note the first lines of the books I'm reading. First lines can really grab a reader's attention and I love seeing where the author takes the reader after their first lines.)

First lines—"For sale or lease: Lennox Manor A five-acre country estate just outside Shanghai, minutes from the junction of Brenan and Jessfield Road."

I love reading stories set in China, especially stories about their past history. The culture and their customs have always fascinated me. I had already read another book by Janie Chang and enjoyed it so I was excited to have a chance to read The Fourth Princess

I was immediately drawn into the worlds of Lisan Liu and Caroline Stanton. They each have their own hardships to deal with, as well as deep, dark secrets from their past. The unraveling of all of that made for an intriguing and captivating storylines. I couldn't stop reading!

I loved everything about The Fourth Princess and highly recommend it for historical fiction lovers and readers who enjoy stories about Chinese culture. This is a good one!

I received an ARC of The Fourth Princess and this is my honest opinion.

The Half of It by Juliette Fay ~ My Thoughts #TheHalfOfIt @Juliette Fay, author @WmMorrowBooks

The Half of It by Juliette Fay
Women's Divorce Fiction, 400 pages
Published April 11, 2023 by William Morrow Paperbacks

One perfect night. Forty years of buried hurt. One chance to make it right. Can the past ever be fixed? With humor, heart, and grace, USA Today bestselling author Juliette Fay delivers an immensely satisfying page-turner, perfect for fans of Josie Silver and Jojo Moyes.

“I’m wondering if we can be friends again.”

When fifty-eight-year-old Helen Spencer reviews her life, what she sees are the mistakes. Over the years, things seemed to go sideways incrementally, one little wrong decision at a time. She can even pinpoint where it all started to go awry: a wonderous, romantic night in the woods her senior year of high school with a boy named Cal Crosby. A night she would soon work hard to forget.

Forty years, one marriage, three children, and one grandbaby later, suddenly there he is—Cal (expletive) Crosby!—right in front of her with grandchildren of his own in tow. The chance to finally get some answers and sort out what happened is within reach. But Helen would much prefer to keep that night and all the fury, hurt, and sorrow that followed tightly locked away where she doesn’t have to face it.

Cal Crosby, however, is ready to talk. He has no idea of the can of worms he’s about to open. In fact, he doesn’t know the half of it.

A warm, poignant, propulsive novel about settling the past, rekindling lost friendships, and rediscovering love when you least expect it.

My thoughts about The Half of It ~~

(I love to note the first lines of the books I'm reading. First lines can really grab a reader's attention and I love seeing where the author takes the reader after their first line.)

First lines—"Helen sits on her favorite bench in the woods by the river, boot heels dug into the stony New England earth, body hitched forward slightly to accommodate the baby backpack."

Helen and Cal were friends in high school, where neither of them are in the 'popular' crowd. Things change, people got hurt, life goes on. Fast forward forty years and these two are thrown together again. Can the hurt, anger, and betrayal ever be forgiven?

I loved watching Cal and Helen rediscover each other but boy did they have a lot to work through. As I got a look at their past through flashbacks, the couple became more real to me. They grew from insecure teens to adults with some of those insecurities still in place.

The Half of It is an excellent look at misunderstandings, and the growth it takes to get past all of that angst for a second chance of happiness. This was another fantastic story by Juliette Fay and like always, I look forward to her next book.

I received a copy of The Half of It from the publisher via Goodreads and this is my honest opinion.

The Library of Legends by Janie Chang ~ My Thoughts #TheLibraryOfLegends

The Library of Legends

The Library of Legends by Janie Chang
Historical Asian Fiction, 400 pages
Published May 12th 2020 by William Morrow Paperbacks

From the author of Three Souls and Dragon Springs Road comes a captivating historical novel—the third in a loosely-connected trilogy—in which a young woman travels across China with a convoy of student refugees, fleeing the hostilities of a brutal war with Japan.

“Myths are the darkest and brightest incarnations of who we are…”

China, 1937: When Japanese bombs begin falling on the city of Nanking, nineteen-year-old Hu Lian and her classmates at Minghua University are ordered to flee. Lian and a convoy of more than a hundred students, faculty, and staff must walk a thousand miles to the safety of China’s western provinces, a journey marred by hunger, cold, and the constant threat of aerial attack. And it is not just the student refugees who are at risk: Lian and her classmates have been entrusted with a priceless treasure, a 500-year-old collection of myths and folklore known as the Library of Legends.

Her family’s past has made Lian wary of forming attachments, but the students’ common duty to safeguard the Library of Legends forms unexpected bonds. Lian finds friendship and a cautious romance with the handsome and wealthy Liu Shaoming. But after one classmate is murdered and another arrested, Lian realizes she must escape from the convoy before a family secret puts her in danger. Accompanied by Shao and the enigmatic maidservant Sparrow, Lian makes her way to Shanghai, hoping to reunite with her mother.

On the journey, Lian learns of the connection between her two companions and a tale from the Library of Legends, The Willow Star and the Prince. Learning Shao and Sparrow’s true identities compels Lian to confront her feelings for Shao. But there are broader consequences too, for as the ancient books travel across China, they awaken immortals and guardian spirits to embark on an exodus of their own, one that changes the country’s fate forever.

Based on true events, rich in Chinese history and lore, The Library of Legends is both an illuminating exploration of China’s recent past and an evocative tale of love, sacrifice, and the extraordinary power of storytelling.

My thoughts about The Library of Legends ~~

(I love to note the first lines of the books I'm reading. First lines can really grab a reader's attention and I love seeing where the author takes the reader after their first lines.)

First line—"The approaching aircraft were too far away to tell whether they were Chinese or Japanese. A moment later, she didn't need to guess."

I love reading about Asian cultures, I've always been fascinated with their customs, beliefs, and lifestyles. The Library of Legends totally delves into all of that as we follow a group of students fleeing for their lives, all while trying to keep the sacred set of books safe.

As Lian flees with the other university students, she comes to rely on Liu Shaoming and Sparrow, learning the secrets of their past and the danger that comes along with that knowledge.

This is a beautifully written story that swept me away to another time and place, rich with the folklore and tales of the ancient Chinese. I definitely want to go back and read this author's other books.

I received an ARC of The Library of Legends via Edelweiss and this is my honest opinion.

The Runaway Midwife

The Runaway Midwife: A Novel by Patricia Harman
ARC, 416 pages
Published: January 31st 2017 by William Morrow Paperbacks

From the USA Today bestselling author of the Hope River series comes a new contemporary midwife novel.

Say “goodbye” to your old life, and “hello” to the life you’ve been waiting for…

Midwife Clara Perry is accustomed to comforting her pregnant patients…calming fathers-to-be as they anxiously await the birth of their children…ensuring the babies she delivers come safely into the world.

But when Clara’s life takes a nosedive, she realizes she hasn’t been tending to her own needs and does something drastic: she runs away and starts over again in a place where no one knows her or the mess she’s left behind in West Virginia. Heading to Sea Gull Island—a tiny, remote Canadian island—Clara is ready for anything. Well, almost. She left her passport back home, and the only way she can enter Canada is by hitching a ride on a snowmobile and illegally crossing the border.

Deciding to reinvent herself, Clara takes a new identity—Sara Livingston, a writer seeking solitude. But there’s no avoiding the outside world. The residents are friendly, and draw “Sara” into their lives and confidences. She volunteers at the local medical clinic, using her midwifery skills, and forms a tentative relationship with a local police officer.

But what will happen if she lets down her guard and reveals the real reason why she left her old life? One lesson soon becomes clear: no matter how far you run, you can never really hide from your past.

My thoughts about The Runaway Midwife ~~

(I love to note the first lines of the books I'm reading. First lines can really grab a reader's attention and I love seeing where the author takes the reader after their first lines.)

First line—"Next to the dead man lying on the beach, mostly covered with snow, is a dead swan, its neck twisted at a strange angle."

The Runaway Midwife was a great read, one that I found myself totally wrapped up in. I instantly liked and admired Clara and was rooting for her to succeed. She leaves everything behind when her life falls apart; her best friend committed suicide, her husband cheated on her, and one of her patients dies unexpectedly. She wants to leave that life behind and she flees to Canada. There is no one she can trust and she constantly worries that someone will find out her true identity. She has to learn to be a strong woman or she is never going to survive.

This story was a wonderful page turner and it kept my attention to the end. The writing was superb with a cast of great characters. I'll be on the lookout for future books by this author.

About the Author

Patricia Harman has spent over thirty years caring for women as a midwife, first as a lay-midwife, delivering babies in cabins and on communal farms in West Virginia, and later as a nurse-midwife in teaching hospitals and in a community hospital birthing center.

She spent over a decade in the sixties and seventies in her wild youth living in rural communes in Washington (Tolstoy Farm), Connecticut (The Committee for Non-Violent Action) and Minnesota (Free Folk). During the Vietnam years, she and her husband, Tom Harman, traveled the country, often hitch-hiking, as they looked for a place to settle. In 1974 they purchased a farm with a group of like-minded friends on top of a ridge in Roane County, West Virginia. Here on the commune, they built log houses, dug a pond, grew and preserved their own food and started the Growing Tree Natural Foods Cooperative.

It was during this time that Patsy attended her first home birth, more or less by accident. "Some people are destined," she has written. "I was staying at a woman friend's commune when she went into labor and I ended up delivering my first baby." Soon after, Harman traveled to Austin, Texas to train with a collective of home-birth midwives. When she returned, she became one of the founding members of The West Virginia Cooperative of Midwives. Her passion for caring for women and babies led her to become an RN as the first step in getting licensed as certified nurse midwife. In 1985, with her children, a yowling cat and her husband she traveled north, pulling a broken down trailer to begin her training at the University of Minnesota where she received her MSN in Nurse-Midwifery.

For the past twenty years, Ms. Harman has been a nurse-midwife on the faculty of The Ohio State University, Case Western Reserve University and most recently West Virginia University. In 1998 she went into private practice with her husband, Tom, an OB/Gyn, in Morgantown, West Virginia. Here they devoted their lives to caring for women and bringing babies into the world in a gentle way.

When, in 2003, the cost of liability insurance for Obstetrics sky-rocketed from $70,000 a year to $110,000, the Harman's decided to give up deliveries. Though many loyal patients grieved the loss of their favorite mid-wife/physician team, the change in life style gave the author time to begin writing her first book, The Blue Cotton Gown: A Midwife's Memoir.

Patricia Harman still lives and works with her husband, Ob/Gyn Thomas Harman, in Morgantown, West Virginia at their clinic, Partners in Women's Health Care. Though she no longer attends births, she provides care for women in early pregnancy and through-out the life span. She brings to this work the same dedication and compassion she brought to obstetrics. ~ Goodreads

Chef Ashna Raje desperately needs a new strategy. How else can she save her beloved restaurant and prove to her estranged, overachieving mother that she isn’t a complete screw up? She’s a chef, what’s the worst that could happen?

Rico Silva, that’s what.

Being paired with a celebrity who was her first love, the man who ghosted her at the worst possible time in her life, only proves what Ashna has always believed: leaps of faith are a recipe for disaster.

But when their catastrophic first meeting goes viral, social media becomes obsessed with their chemistry. The competition on the show is fierce…and so is the simmering desire between Ashna and Rico.  Every minute they spend together rekindles feelings that pull them toward their disastrous past.
