Release Day: Beach Blues by Joanne DiMaio

Happy Release Day!

Beach Blues

Beach Blues by Joanne DeMaio
Print and e-book, 376 pages
Published: May 17, 2016

New York Times bestselling author Joanne DeMaio invites you to spend the summer by the sea, in a quaint New England beach town where friends and love await just outside the cottage doors.

Celia Gray finds herself house-sitting a silver-shingled cottage at Stony Point. She arrives with her guitar, a few staging jobs ... and a bit of summertime sadness. That is, until an unforgettable group of beach friends draws her in like a breath of salt air.

Sal DeLuca heard the words in a dream: Take me to the sea. So after a decade of demanding work, he takes his first vacation in years. Trading in his suit and tie for blue jeans and boat shoes, Sal unexpectedly arrives at his mother's shabby inn on the Connecticut shore, winding his way into the lives and hearts of the close-knit beach community.

When Stony Point's two wash-ashores, Sal and Celia, meet, some say it's a match made in beach-heaven. And so begins a sweet seaside summer ... forging friendships, adventures and new love. But all is not at ease in the gentle sea breeze as a dark secret turns the tide for the Stony Point crew.

Beach Blues is a novel bringing you right to its secluded fishing shack and weathered boardwalk, to its wooden rowboat and lantern-lit porches. A novel that welcomes you, as much as it may break your heart.

I have read every single one of Joanne's books and I love each and every one of them. I am so excited that Beach Blues is finally out and I can't wait to read it! Go grab your copy now.

On Tour: Crushed by Deborah Coonts #CrushedTour ~ Voices and a Giveaway!

Crushed

Crushed, a novel of wine and love by Deborah Coonts
Publication Date: March 9, 2016
Genre: Contemporary Romance

In Napa Valley, he who has the best grapes wins.

And in the pursuit of perfection, dreams and hearts can be crushed.

Sophia Stone is a widow on the brink of an empty nest, stuck in an unsatisfying job managing the vineyard for a mediocre Napa vintner. Faced with an uncertain future she wonders how do you choose between making a living and making a life? Between protecting your heart and sharing it? Five years ago, after her husband was killed in an accident, Sophia put her heart and dreams on ice to care for those around her. Now her home, her dreams, and her family’s legacy grapes are threatened by the greed of the new money moving into the Valley. Sophia has a choice—give up and let them take what is hers, or risk everything fighting a battle everyone says she can’t win.

Nico Treviani has one goal in life: make brilliant wine. A woman would be an unwanted distraction. So, while recognized as one of Napa’s premier vintners, Nico finds himself alone… until his brother’s death drops not one, but two women into his life—his thirteen-year-old twin nieces. In an instant, Nico gains a family and loses his best friend and partner in the winemaking business. Struggling to care for his nieces, Nico accepts a job as head winemaker for Avery Specter, one of the new-money crowd. And he learns the hard way that new money doesn’t stick to the old rules.

Voices

Welcome to The Book Bag today Deborah! I love it when authors answer my 'voices' question. Their answers are always so much fun to read and gives us all a little look at their writing process.

I have heard other authors say that they 'hear voices in their head' and that is how they write their books: the characters are telling their stories. Not being a writer myself, that concept has always intrigued me. Does this happen to you? How do you come up with your stories?

Yes, this is my world. I hear voices and play with imaginary friends all day everyday, in the shower, on a walk, at night. I dated a psychologist once and you should’ve seen the look on his face when he asked me what I intended to do that day and I replied, “Play with my imaginary friends.” After some thought he told me that to most in his business, I would be an annuity. No, we didn’t last long:)

In real life, as in my imaginary one, I’m very visual, so I translate all of my stories into a running movie reel in my head, then I write down what I see and hear. Most of the time this works pretty well. I’ve run into trouble with my first series when people ask me what my protagonist, Lucky, looks like. The book is written in her point of view, so I never saw her in my head. I was always looking at life through her eyes. Yep, had to find a mirror so she could comment on her attributes and inadequacies.

The Napa series is told in the third person, which presented it’s own challenges. Being able to crawl inside different characters and wander around in their thoughts made me feel like the Whoopi Goldberg character in Ghost. The more I did it, the more characters started queuing up for their chance to talk and to be heard! In CRUSHED, Nico, the male lead, has a particularly strong voice. He threatened to take over the story. I had to shush him quite a bit:) Now, CRUSHED, is the first in the series and, as I envision it, each of Sophia’s friends (including her daughter, Dani) will get to be the star of her own book, but all the women will be present in some capacity in each story as well. So, lots and lots of competing voice. The challenge is to amp up the one’s I want.

Most of the time, listening to all my characters works out fine. Other times a character simply refuses to do what I think they ought to. Since these are imaginary friends, you’d think I’d dream up ones who are a bit more compliant! But, then they wouldn’t be all that interesting to write and read about, would they? In the third book in the Lucky series, a French chef simply hijacked the whole story. I knew where I wanted the story to go but I couldn’t get past him. I tried everything. Finally, one night in a hotel in San Antonio, lying awake in the darkness listening to my then husband snore so badly I thought someone would call security, the French Chef finally told me his story. And it’s a great one. So, despite my intentions to the contrary, he became a major player in Lucky’s life, complicating things dramatically, as temperamental French chefs are won’t to do. Had the same thing happen with Lucky’s best friend, Teddie—Las Vegas’s premier female impersonator, who also happens to be straight. He was not happy at being the sidekick, the jester, if you will. And his determination to play a larger role made the stories so much better.

Through all of this, I’ve learned, I need to listen to my characters. When they seem particularly adamant, they usually are right. And they have taken the stories off on unforeseen roads that lead to much better adventures and complications!

So, the story ideas come to me, through characters, through an intriguing setting (Vegas, Napa), a Ted talk, a conference I attend with a friend because it’s about something I know nothing about, through a casual comment, through one of the myriad of things I read everyday. Life is full of stories. The key is recognizing them.

All great fun—the very best job ever.

It's Monday! What Are You Reading? May 16, 2016

It's Monday! What Are You Reading? is a place to meet up and share what you have been, are and about to be reading over the week. It's an opportunity to visit other blogs and to comment on their reads. And ... you can add to that ever growing TBR pile! So welcome everyone. This meme started with J Kaye's Blog and then was taken up by Sheila from Book Journey. Sheila then passed it on to Kathryn at the Book Date. And here we are!

This week has been a slow reading week for me. My 85 year old mother-in-law is visiting us so that has filled my life with talking with her and having family over to see her. I am not getting the quality reading time in like I am used to and I really miss it. But I realize it's just for a short time and it may be the last time she will be able to be here with us. So I am enjoying her visit and will catch up after she is gone.

She Poured Out Her Heart by Jean Thompson ~ My Thoughts

26236962

She Poured Out Her Heart

She Poured Out Her Heart by Jean Thompson
Print and e-book, 432 pages
Expected publication: May 31st 2016 by Blue Rider Press

National Book Award finalist Jean Thompson traces the complicated friendship of two very different women who meet in college. In the tradition of her bestselling novel The Year We Left Home, Thompson has crafted a novel of remarkable psychological suspense, cast with the kinds of deeply realized characters that have been heralded as “emotionally fluid” and “deeply familiar.”

The night that Jane and Bonnie meet on a college campus sets them on paths forever entwined. Bonnie, the wild and experimental one, always up for anything, has spent the past two decades bouncing between ill-fated relationships; while Jane, whose seemingly perfect life, perfect husband, and perfect children appear to have materialized out of a fantasy. But these appearances contradict the quiet, inescapable doubt Jane feels about her life. One night, in the middle of her own Christmas party, she steps outside into the snow, removes her clothing and shoes, and lies down in the backyard. When she is discovered, nothing is the same for anyone. As Jane begins to have visions and retreat into a private inner world, Bonnie finds herself drawn inevitably into an affair with Jane’s husband.

Thompson’s mastery of complex emotion begets a novel of desire and the nature of love—who we love, how we’re loved, and, most important, that we reach urgently and always for a higher love, regardless of our circumstances. She Poured Out Her Heart is a finely wrought, haunting story of female friendship and deception, and the distance in between.

My thoughts about She Poured Out Her Heart ~~

(I love to note the first lines of the books I'm reading. First lines can really grab a reader's attention and I love seeing where the author takes the reader after their first line.)

First line—'Someone should tell her he's not worth it.'

That first line really takes on deeper meanings the further into the story the reader gets. She Poured Her Heart Out is rich in characters who find themselves in intertwining relationships. I don't think the characters themselves even know if their relationships are based in love or revenge. And the reader is the innocent observer, watching the goings on and wondering how it will all play out.

She Poured Her Heart Out is a wonderful, character driven novel with complicated players, in complicated situations, each for their own complicated reasons. I was drawn to the end because I was intrigued to see how it would all shake out and to see which relationships would survive and which ones wouldn't.

I received a copy of this e-book from First to Read in exchange for my honest opinion.

Book Spotlight Giveaway! Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty

I have sooooo many books! I have a ton of print books and probably even more e-books. The Book Spotlight Giveaway feature that I post every Saturday is a way for me to clear my shelves and to share some of the many books I have. There are a lot of different reasons that I might be letting some of my books go, the biggest one is that when we moved 2 years ago I discovered how many books I really do have. This feature is a way for my to cull my collection and to give someone else the opportunity to enjoy them.

The book this week is one that I have read twice. My book club just finished it for our May meeting. and we had one of our best discussion ever about this book. Everyone loved it! You can read my thoughts here. (originally posted August 3rd, 2014)

Good luck and be sure to stop back next week!

Big Little Lies

Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty
Hardcover, 480 pages
Published July 29th, 2014 by Amy Einhorn Books/Putnam

Sometimes it’s the little lies that turn out to be the most lethal...

A murder.... a tragic accident.... or just parents behaving badly?

What’s indisputable is that someone is dead. But who did what?

Big Little Lies follows three women, each at a crossroads: Madeline is a force to be reckoned with. She’s funny and biting, passionate, she remembers everything and forgives no one. Her ex-husband and his yogi new wife have moved into her beloved beachside community, and their daughter is in the same kindergarten class as Madeline’s youngest (how is this possible?). And to top it all off, Madeline’s teenage daughter seems to be choosing Madeline’s ex-husband over her. (How. Is. This. Possible?).

Celeste is the kind of beautiful woman who makes the world stop and stare. While she may seem a bit flustered at times, who wouldn’t be, with those rambunctious twin boys? Now that the boys are starting school, Celeste and her husband look set to become the king and queen of the school parent body. But royalty often comes at a price, and Celeste is grappling with how much more she is willing to pay.

New to town, single mom Jane is so young that another mother mistakes her for the nanny. Jane is sad beyond her years and harbors secret doubts about her son. But why? While Madeline and Celeste soon take Jane under their wing, none of them realizes how the arrival of Jane and her inscrutable little boy will affect them all.

Big Little Lies is a brilliant take on ex-husbands and second wives, mothers and daughters, schoolyard scandal, and the dangerous little lies we tell ourselves just to survive.

About the author

Liane was born on a beautiful November day in 1966 in Sydney. A few hours after she was born, she smiled directly at her father through the nursery glass window, which is remarkable, seeing as most babies can’t even focus their eyes at that age.

Her first word was ‘glug’. This was faithfully recorded in the baby book kept by her mother. (As the eldest of six children, Liane was the only one to get a baby book so she likes to refer to it often.)

As a child, she loved to read, so much so that school friends would cruelly hide their books when she came to play. She still doesn’t know how to go to sleep at night without first reading a novel for a very long time in a very hot bath.

She can’t remember the first story she ever wrote, but she does remember her first publishing deal. Her father ‘commissioned’ her to write a novel for him and paid her an advance of $1.00. She wrote a three volume epic called, ‘The Mystery of Dead Man’s Island’

After leaving school, Liane began a career in advertising and marketing. She became quite corporate for a while and wore suits and worried a lot about the size of her office. She eventually left her position as marketing manager of a legal publishing company to run her own (not especially successful) business called The Little Ad Agency. After that she worked as (a more successful, thankfully) freelance advertising copywriter, writing everything from websites and TV commercials to the back of the Sultana Bran box.

She also wrote short stories and many first chapters of novels that didn’t go any further. The problem was that she didn’t actually believe that real people had novels published. Then one day she found out that they did, when her younger sister Jaclyn Moriarty called to say that her (brilliant, hilarious, award-winning) novel, Feeling Sorry for Celia was about to be published.

In a fever of sibling rivalry, Liane rushed to the computer and wrote a children’s book called The Animal Olympics, which went on to be enthusiastically rejected by every publisher in Australia.

She calmed down and enrolled in a Masters degree at Macquarie University in Sydney. As part of that degree, she wrote her first novel, Three Wishes. It was accepted by the lovely people at Pan Macmillan and went on to be published around the world. (Her latest books are published by the equally lovely people at Penguin in both the US and the UK)

Since then she has written two more novels for adults, as well as a series of books for children.

Liane is now a full-time author. She lives in Sydney with her husband, her new baby daughter Anna, and her son George, who likes to sit on her lap while she works, helpfully smashing his fist against the keyboard and suggesting that she might prefer to be watching the Wiggles instead.

Once upon a time she went heli-skiing and skydiving* and scuba diving. These days she goes to the park and ‘Gymbaroo’ and sings ‘I’m a Little Cuckoo Clock’ at swimming lessons. She has discovered that the adrenaline burst you experience from jumping out of a plane is remarkably similar to the one you get when your toddler makes a run for it in a busy car park.
