Sometimes Rest in Peace isn't an option...
Kacie Ramsey sees ghosts—and it's ruining her life. Her mother left, her father blames her, and no matter how hard she tries, she can't keep the ghosts away. Now a new power has emerged. Nightly visions of grisly murders and a relentless predator draw her to the brink of insanity.
When the phantom appears at a party, Kacie's longtime crush, Logan, saves her. He invites her to join the Orion Circle, a group of supernatural hunters with chapters in schools all over the country. Through the Circle, Kacie learns to embrace her spiritual powers, and for the first time in her life she feels in control rather than a victim.
But the Foxblood Demon will not give up so easily. A demented serial killer in life who trapped the souls of the thirteen children he murdered, imprisoning them within the walls of his mansion. Now in death, he plots his return while drawing power from the pure souls of the children. He recognizes something in Kacie he's never seen before—a medium powerful enough to provide a vessel for his tainted soul.
Kacie can't ignore the tortured souls of the children crying out to her every night. With Logan at her side, she will fight the Foxblood Demon. But can they banish this powerful phantom, or will Kacie lose not only her body, but her eternal soul to the monster.
My thoughts about Tortured Souls ~~
I have been helping promote Kimber Leigh Wheaton and some of her books here at The Book Bag for a while now. Kimber Leigh has been such a great person to work with so I figured it was time for me to give her books a try. Tortured Souls intrigued me. First of all, right off the bat, I fell in love with this cover. Isn't it gorgeous? In addition to having a beautiful cover, this story just sounded so good, a real nice little ghost story.
'Parties are just not my thing. I always seem to run into ghosts.'Kacie has had to keep her spiritual powers a secret and knows that her dad blames her for her mother leaving them. There is so much she doesn't understand. She finally connects with a classmate, Logan, and he introduces her to a whole group of people who have special powers too. She finally doesn't feel like such an outsider anymore.
'The last time someone I cared about discovered my ability they left and never looked back. I like Logan too much to allow that to happen.'This group, the Orion Circle, finds themselves going up against the sinister serial killer, the Foxblood Demon, who has killed 13 children. Kacie can help these poor souls rest in peace, if the Foxblood Demon doesn't take her first. It will take everyone's power in the Orion Circle to help destroy this demon and it won't be easy.
'Soon you will belong to me and my reign of terror on the mortal plane will begin.'I loved the parts where Kacie connects with the souls of the dead and helps them to be released from whatever is holding them here so that they can finally be at peace. What a wonderful thing that would be, to be able to help souls like that. (As long as it didn't get too scary.)
The story gets pretty intense when they are battling the demon. I wasn't able to stop and I stayed up way too late reading. But there was no way I could stop and leave myself hanging, not knowing how things were going to end. I had to know what happened. And all along as I was reading, I kept thinking, 'Wow, this would make a great movie!' I was playing the scenes in my head.
I really enjoyed reading Tortured Souls. It opened my eyes to another type of YA book that I had not read before; the supernatural, psychic world. This was a wonderful story to spike my interest in reading more of this genre. And I can't wait to read the next book in this series!
