My thoughts about Random Acts of Kindness ~~

Edited to add my thoughts about the audiobook.

Random Acts of Kindness should be required reading for everyone. I'm serious! It's packed with uplifting, beautiful, and heartwarming stories showing the goodness of people. It's always a heart-warning thing to read about positivity in our world where there can sometimes be so much negativity.

Over and over, the random acts written about in this book started out as just a small thing, something someone saw to help one other person, or a small group of people. And then that idea blossomed into a movement to help so many others. Sometimes, it only take a small act of kindness to deeply touch one person. And by doing that, you have made the world a better place.

I savored this book and read a few stories each day. I found myself reflecting on the good that was being done by these common, ordinary people—people like you and me. Most of these stories will melt your heart and some will bring on some tears, but they all will lift up your mood and make you want to share some kindness.

I love visiting Dete's Facebook page and reading about the wonderful people who are doing amazing things to help others. It brings a positive, upbeat tone to my day and makes me want to go out and do good.

Listening to the audiobook version of Random Acts of Kindness and the narrator, Karl T. Wright was amazing! Not only did I get to hear about all of these wonderful stories of kindness, this narrator was the perfect one to tell them. His soothing, calm voice offered the ultimate experience to all the goodness in people. 

Once again, I am in awe of the small kindnesses of some people and what a huge impact they had on the recipients of that kindness. In some cases, those small acts blew up into something life changing for a lot of people. Remember, all it takes is a little kindness to make everyone feel better.

Life is full of surprises…

Claire Martin's life is perfect, or at least she tells herself it is. Sure, Claire's husband of twenty years left her for a younger woman four years ago, but that is all in the past. Now, Claire is looking forward to her daughter's Bahama wedding and spending a week in paradise. The only thing Claire dreads is her ex-husband and his wife will also be on the island. Claire is determined to make the best of it, though. What Claire doesn't realize is ignoring her ex-husband for the week is going to be impossible.

James Martin's life is a mess. His wife of less than four years has made him the most miserable man on earth and now they are in the middle of a messy divorce. He's happy that he can forget her for a week as he goes off to the Bahamas to attend his lovely daughter's wedding. Jim is embarrassed to admit to his daughter and his ex-wife, Claire, that he made the biggest mistake of his life when he left her for another woman, so he makes up a story as to why his new wife didn't come along. When he and Claire are unexpectedly forced upon each other, Jim soon realizes what he's lost and he begins to wonder if he can find a way back into Claire's heart.

My thoughts about Destination Wedding (audio) ~~

(I love to note the first lines of the books I'm reading. First lines can really grab a reader's attention and I love seeing where the author takes the reader after their first lines.)

First lines—"Clare Martin discreetly glanced at her watch with one eye as she watched her customer with the other turn this way and that in front of the three-way mirror. Clare had to be out of the shop in five minutes or else she'd be late meeting with her daughter, and she didn't want to be late. Today was important."

I just love Deanna's books and I have gradually been 're-reading' them by listening to them on audio. Destination Wedding is a wonderful story about love, lost love, and rekindled love. 

This was the first audiobook that I have listened to by this narrator. It took me a little bit to get used to her intonation and speaking mannerisms, but once I got settled into the story, it was very enjoyable. 

Below, you can read my thoughts about Destination Wedding, which I originally posted on May 7, 2014. 

I am always so excited when Deanna has a new book out. I know I am going to be taken away on a wondrous, emotional journey. In Destination Wedding we get to travel to the Bahamas and experience the sun, sand, and surf. 

'No setting could have been more perfect for a wedding celebration.'

But then, on the flip side, we also get to experience all the drama that goes with a wedding; glitches in the plans, divorced parents trying to be civil to each other, and getting to know the new in-laws. You know the divorced couple is going to have a hard time getting along as they try to put their past hurts behind them. But can they?

'The grass hadn't been greener on the other side. In fact, it had been brown, prickly, and downright nasty.'

I love the settings in all of Deanna's books. She writes so beautifully and with so much description that I feel like I am there with her characters, enjoy the scenery as much as they are. One spot in the book in particular that I loved was when Claire enters her room at the hotel and sees it for the first time. I felt like I was looking at that beautiful room just as Clare was seeing it.

Destination Wedding is the perfect book for reading this time of year. This is the wedding season, is it not? And how can you go wrong with a book set in the Bahamas? Deanna has done it again, writing another fabulous story, with wonderful characters, and a great setting! I loved my little escape to the beach!

I loved Summer of the Loon when I read it. Listening to it recently took me back to that wonderful time and place. The narrator, Vanessa Moyen, is perfect as the reader. She has a young voice and totally became Ali to me but she does a great job with the other characters as well. I don't normally pick books by the narrator but I really enjoyed listening to Vanessa's voice. I'll be checking out more of her work. 

My thoughts about Summer of the Loon ~~

I know when I start one of Deanna's books that I am going to enjoy the story so, so much. When I get one of her books, I drop whatever I am reading and doing so that I can dive into the new world she has created for us. And I am never disappointed. She writes such wonderful, down to earth, believable stories with very likable characters.

Summer of the Loon was the perfect book to read right now, in the dead of winter, with the cold and snow blowing around me. The story takes place during the summer on a beautiful lake in northern Minnesota. I really felt like I was there, enjoying the boat rides and watching the resident loons.

Ali moves to Minnesota from California to live with a grandfather she has never met, after her mother dies. The move itself is a big adjustment but then she is also thrust upon an old man who really doesn't want her to be there.

'At only sixteen years old, her former life was behind her, and she was walking toward her new life, meeting her estranged grandfather for the very first time.'

Ben has had his heart broken and is not ready to let anyone in and he now finds himself responsible for a teenager. He doesn't want to be hurt again and isn't able to open his heart to her.

"Her mother had been so affectionate and loving. How in the world had she come from this cold, hard person in front of her?'

I loved the setting of the story. Like I mentioned, it takes place on a lake in Minnesota which just sounds so peaceful and relaxing. It reminded me of the times I have spent in a cabin at a lake as I was growing up. It can be such a happy time.

"The ocean was always moving, rushing onto shore, wave after wave. The lake, however, moved in slower motion, making it peaceful and calming.'

I totally fell in love with Ali. She is such a wise, mature girl for her age and she doesn't take any guff off of anyone, even her grandfather. Especially her grandfather! She tells it like it is and doesn't let anyone get away with anything.

'This was the closest he'd ever stood next to her. Ali could smell his spicy aftershave. He smells like a grandfather.'

Deanna's books are always so wonderful to read and she is able to make the reader connect emotionally with her characters. I was brought to tears several times as the characters worked through their issues and emotions. That takes a special kind of writing to be able to get the reader so involved!

And if you haven't already guessed, I love to mark great lines as I am reading and add them to my posts, lines that spoke to me in some way. So that's what the blue sections are above, lines that I loved. I will leave you with one of my very favorite lines of the whole book.

'Sometimes, you just have to believe in a person no matter what.'

I love it!! Thank you Deanna, for writing another great story to add to my collection.

My thoughts about Spinning the Moon ~ 

I received Spinning the Moon from LibraryThing for review. I had previously read White's novel Flight Patterns and loved it. This audiobook is actually her first two books, all spiffed up and republished into one. I really loved the first story, I think because of the time travel element to it. The second story was very interesting but didn't quite grab me like the first one did.

The stories are wonderful historical fiction tales, set in the Civil War time. I also enjoyed the narrators of both stories. Their narrations were enough different from each other so it made it easy to believe I was listening to two different stories. They both did a great job with the different characters and made the stories come alive for me.

I received copy of this audiobook from LibraryThing and am voluntarily reviewing it.
