Congrats Camille
on the release today of
This Won't End Well!

This Won't End Well by Camille Pagán
Print and e-book. 300 pages
Published February 25th 2020 by Lake Union Publishing

An ingeniously witty novel about the risks—and rewards—of opening your life to new people by Amazon Charts bestselling author Camille Pagán.

No new people: that’s Annie Mercer’s vow. It’s bad enough that her boss sabotaged her chemistry career and her best friend tried to cure her with crystals. But after her fiancé, Jon, asks for space while he’s gallivanting around Paris, Annie decides she needs space too—from everyone.

Yet when Harper moves in next door, Annie can’t help but train a watchful eye on the glamorous but fragile young woman. And if keeping Harper safe requires teaming up with Mo, a maddeningly optimistic amateur detective, who is she to mind her own business?

Soon Annie has let not one but two new people into her life. Then Jon reappears—and he wants her to join him in France. She’s pretty sure letting anyone get close won’t end well. So she must decide: Is another shot at happiness worth the risk?

My thoughts about This Won't End Well ~~

(I love to note the first lines of the books I'm reading. First lines can really grab a reader's attention and I love seeing where the author takes the reader after their first line.)

First line—"Dear Jon. Hello seems like such an innocuous word, but it's really a portal to loss."

Nothing in Annie's life is going well—her job tanked, her best friend had flaked, and now her fiancé left the country. That's it! She's swearing off new people and is just going to focus on getting her life back on track. She doesn't have time to invest in getting to know someone new.

But maybe that's not what life has in store for her. Maybe she is going to have to open her mind and her heart to the possibilities.

This Won't End Well is an interesting, fun look at relationships, friends, love, and sticking up for what's right. I loved every word and loved watching Annie figure out what's important in her life. Camille has written another wonderful novel that is sure to be a bestseller! Check it out!

I received an ARC of This Won't End Well from the publisher via NetGalley and this is my honest opinion of the book.

Release Day! I'm Fine and Neither Are You by Camille Pagán ~ My Thoughts #ImFineAndNeitherAreYou #TallPoppyWriter #NetGalley

I'm Fine and Neither Are You by [Pagán, Camille]

Congrats Camille

I'm Fine and Neither Are You!

I'm Fine and Neither Are You by Camille Pagán
Print and e-book, 266 pages
Published April 1st 2019 by Lake Union Publishing

Honesty is the best policy…except maybe when it comes to marriage in this brilliant novel about the high price of perfection from bestselling author Camille Pagán.

Wife. Mother. Breadwinner. Penelope Ruiz-Kar is doing it all—and barely keeping it together. Meanwhile, her best friend, Jenny Sweet, appears to be sailing through life. As close as the two women are, Jenny’s passionate marriage, pristine house, and ultra-polite child stand in stark contrast to Penelope’s underemployed husband, Sanjay, their unruly brood, and the daily grind she calls a career.

Then a shocking tragedy reveals that Jenny’s life is far from perfect. Reeling, Penelope vows to stop keeping the peace and finally deal with the issues in her relationship. So she and Sanjay agree to a radical proposal: both will write a list of changes they want each other to make—then commit to complete and total honesty.

What seems like a smart idea quickly spirals out of control, revealing new rifts and even deeper secrets. As Penelope stares down the possible implosion of her marriage, she must ask herself: When it comes to love, is honesty really the best policy?

My thoughts about I'm Fine and Neither Are You ~~

(I love to note the first lines of the books I'm reading. First lines can really grab a reader's attention and I love seeing where the author takes the reader after their first lines.)

First line—"Mistakes were made. The first wasn't even something I did; it was only a germ of an idea, fleeting but infectious."

The usual response when someone asks "How are you?" is "I'm fine. How are you?". We're all fine, aren't we? But so many of those times, we really aren't fine. And how much do we really know someone, when realistically, we aren't completely honest with one another?

Penny thought she knew her best friend Jenny so well and was envious of her seemingly perfect life. But when that all comes crashing down, Penny takes a good look at her own life and decides some changes need to be made. But can she, her marriage, and her family survive those changes?

I loved I'm Fine and Neither Are You. I loved it because it was a story with relatable characters that drew me in and who I immediately cared about. I also loved it because it shows that no one is perfect, everyone has issues, and that we all need to remember we don't really know what someone else is going through. And lastly, this story reminded me that we need to be honest and let others know what and how we are feeling. They won't know if we don't tell them, leading them to believe that everything is 'fine'.

I'm Fine and Neither Are You is a wonderful look at all kinds of relationships and what it means to be honest in those relationships. You definitely should add it to your must-read book list.

I received an ARC of I'm Fine and Neither Are You in exchange for my honest opinion.

My thoughts about Woman Last Seen in Her Thirties ~~

(I love to note the first lines of the books I'm reading. First lines can really grab a reader's attention and I love seeing where the author takes the reader after their first line.)

First lines—"It's an age-old story: woman meets man, man woos woman, woman spends her best years believing their love is the everlasting kind."

I loved this book! It is a story that probably quite a few of us have been able to relate to at some point in our lives, even for maybe just a little bit. Haven't we all felt somewhat invisible and unappreciated at times?

Maggie's no-good husband, Adam tells her one day that he 'wants a different life.' What the heck? Maggie thought their marriage and their lives were doing just fine. He ups and leaves her and she tries to get on with her life, suddenly realizing that she has no identity—she has been part of a couple for so many years.

There are so many great characters in this book. There's Maggie, of course, as we watch her stumble though her 'new life', and Rose, Maggie's mother-in-law. I loved their relationship and how Maggie didn't give up on Rose, even though Rose's son gave up on Maggie. And then there's Jean, the carefree, adventurous women that Maggie meets on the plane on her way to Rome. Jean takes her under her wing and gives Maggie advice on how to figure it all out.

Woman Last Seen in Her Thirties is an entertaining, thought provoking, and memorable story that captured me from the start. I can highly recommend it as a very enjoyable read!

Life and Other Near-Death Experiences by Camille Pagán

Life and Other Near-Death Experiences

Life and Other Near-Death Experiences by Camille Pagán
Print and e-book, 242 pages
Published November 1st 2015 by Lake Union Publishing

Libby Miller has always been an unwavering optimist— but when her husband drops a bomb on their marriage the same day a doctor delivers devastating news, she realizes her rose-colored glasses have actually been blinding her.

With nothing left to lose, she abandons her life in Chicago for the clear waters and bright beaches of the Caribbean for what might be her last hurrah. Despite her new sunny locale, her plans go awry when she finds that she can’t quite outrun the past or bring herself to face an unknowable future. Every day of tropical bliss may be an invitation to disaster, but with her twin brother on her trail and a new relationship on the horizon, Libby is determined to forget about fate. Will she risk it all to live—and love—a little longer?

With Life and Other Near-Death Experiences, Camille Pagán has written a tart and spirited novel about the essential questions of life, death, and love.

My thoughts about Life and Other Near-Death Experiences ~~

Well, this book starts out with a bang! On the very first page, the main character gets a diagnosis of a very rare type of cancer, with a six month prognosis. As soon as she gets home after hearing this devastating news, her husband reveals his secret to her and she quickly finds her life spiraling out of control. But Libby quickly takes control back and decides to live her life just the way she wants, not the way everyone else thinks she should.

I immediately felt compassion for Libby and what she was going through. So many of us nowadays have been touched by cancer in some way, I know I have. It was interesting watching Libby as she came to terms with all that was going on in her life. I was in awe of her ability to just do what she wanted and to heck with everyone else.

Life and Other Near-Death Experiences is a beautifully written, emotional look at life, death, decisions, love, memories, adventure, and the importance of friends and family. I really loved reading this book. It was easily a book that I could have devoured in one sitting if I could have. It drew me in that completely. And I just discovered a new 'must-read' author. I love when that happens!

Q & A with Camille

Q. Given the seriousness of all she faces, the protagonist, Libby Miller, narrates with a light touch. Would you classify this as a comic novel?

A. Life and Other Near-Death Experiences is filled with so many moments that are serious and devastating that it seems best to describe it as a book that’s equal parts heartbreaking and humorous.

Q. Why did you decide to approach the weighty subject of cancer in a lighthearted manner?

A. While I don’t share Libby’s unrelenting optimism, I’ve always turned to humor to cope with problems both major and inconsequential. I wrote Life while I was going through a difficult time myself, and employing a biting and often irreverent tone felt liberating.

Q. Was there anything in your personal experience that inspired you to write a novel set in motion by a diagnosis of cancer?

A. I lost a dear friend to cancer several years ago. She was an incredibly funny and bright person, and through her long and ultimately fatal ordeal, she never shed her sense of humor. This particular friend has inspired me in so many different ways; and while I didn’t consciously decide to channel her when I began writing this novel, I look back now and see parts of her shining through the pages of Life.

Q. Why did you decide to make Libby a twin?

A. I have two sisters, one of whom is only eleven months younger than me. We’re very different—yet having the same shared history, we have an uncanny ability to understand each other, sometimes more than we understand ourselves, and even to preempt or predict what the other person may think or do. I wanted to give Libby a similar counterpart—someone who could act as her mirror and say, “Take a closer look and see what’s really happening.”

Q. Part of the novel is set on a small Puerto Rican island. Is it a real place? Did you spend time there doing research?

A. My husband is Puerto Rican, and over the past fifteen years that we’ve been together, I have spent months (maybe longer!) in Puerto Rico—including the island of Vieques, where part of Life takes place. Puerto Rico is one of my favorite places on earth, and it’s incredibly important to our family. It was inevitable that I would eventually set a novel there.

Q. Do you share Libby Miller’s optimistic bent? Are you like her in any ways? Different?

A. While I have moments of optimism, I have much more in common with Libby’s brother Paul, who is highly anxious and has a proclivity for catastrophizing. Writing about a person so unlike myself was a welcome departure.

Q. You’ve had a well-regarded career as a journalist, writing in particular about health and nutrition. Did you bring any of that background to the writing of this novel?

A. I’m passionate about my work as a health journalist and editor, which is probably why I’ve now written two novels that have health-related subplots. For Life, I tapped into my research background to figure out how one could receive an unexpected and almost misidentified cancer diagnosis (which is not terribly uncommon, I’m sorry to say), and to research the particular form of cancer that Libby has, which is very rare, and how that might shape her future. From there, however, I let go of all of my medical knowledge so I could accurately convey Libby’s shock and disillusionment in the face of her prognosis.

Q. What inspired you to move from your non-fiction journalism to writing fiction?

A. Fiction has always been my first love. Even so, I didn’t start writing novels until I was nearly thirty. I knew from the early pages of that first book (which went on to become The Art of Forgetting) that writing was so joy-inducing that I’d keep doing it even if none of my books were ever published.

Q. Are you at work on a new novel? If so, what is it about?

A. I’m always working on a novel! No, truly, I’ve written almost every day for the past seven years, and I think my work increasingly reflects the time I’ve put in. The novel I’m writing now doesn’t have a medical element. Instead, it’s about a couple who’ve decided to use an unconventional strategy to attempt to breathe fresh life into their dying marriage. Of course, in addition to the serious topics the novel tackles—Why do we marry? What keeps love alive? Is it possible to sustain romantic feelings for another person for decades?—it includes a heavy dose of humor.

The Art of Forgetting

A moving and insightful debut novel of great friendship interrupted. Can the relationship survive when the memories are gone?

Marissa Rogers never wanted to be an alpha; beta suited her just fine. Taking charge without taking credit had always paid off: vaulting her to senior editor at a glossy magazine; keeping the peace with her critical, weightobsessed mother; and enjoying the benefits of being best friends with gorgeous, charismatic, absolutely alpha Julia Ferrar.

And then Julia gets hit by a cab. She survives with minor obvious injuries, but brain damage steals her memory and alters her personality, possibly forever. Suddenly, Marissa is thrown into the role of alpha friend. As Julia struggles to regain her memory- dredging up issues Marissa would rather forget, including the fact that Julia asked her to abandon the love of her life ten years ago- Marissa’s own equilibrium is shaken.

With the help of a dozen girls, she reluctantly agrees to coach in an after-school running program. There, Marissa uncovers her inner confidence and finds the courage to reexamine her past and take control of her future.

The Art of Forgetting is a story about the power of friendship, the memories and myths that hold us back, and the delicate balance between forgiving and forgetting.
