Sweet Hollow Women by Holly Tierney-Bedord ~ My Thoughts #SweetHollowWomen

Sweet Hollow Women by Holly Tierney-Bedord
Narrated by Scott Cluthe
Audible Audio
Published June 1st 2020 by Holly Tierney-Bedord

As part of a family where life happens to you, fifteen-year-old Carasine Busey is devastated but not surprised when her family drops everything in Sweet Hollow, Louisiana to follow her dad’s shaky career as a welder. It’s not especially shocking, either, when he abandons them all shortly after they settle into their new home in the city.

Carasine, her mom Rhonda, and the rest of the Busey clan have adapted to roll with the punches. From Rhonda’s secret broken heart to Great-Great-Grandpa Jimbo’s eccentric failed dreams, Carasine and her family are used to disappointment.

It’s not until Carasine gets a second chance with an unlikely pair of long-lost relatives that she realizes her path in life might be up to her to navigate. Being their flesh and blood convinces her that there may be some hope for her after all.

My thoughts about Sweet Hollow Women ~~

(I love to note the first lines of the books I'm reading. First lines can really grab a reader's attention and I love seeing where the author takes the reader after their first line.)

First line—"Margaret Haydel would turn ten years old June 23, 1962. It was a birthday she had long dreamt of celebrating."

I love multi-generational stories. And believe me, this one really delves into the generations. Sweet Hollow Women is story about a family of women—women who all struggle with life but at the same time, they are all strong in their own way. As the story is revealed from each person's perspective, we see that strength over and over again. Life was hard for all of these women, and sometimes they didn't make the best decisions, but that's real life, right?

Holly has created very memorable characters and the way this story is told—with alternating voices—the reader learns the back story of each person's life. We come to understand how all the generations are tied together, whether they wanted to be or not.

I loved the slow feel of the southern way of life that is Sweet Hollow and I felt very connected to all of these women. I truly came to care about what happened to each of them. I was sad when I came to the end of this compelling story. I wanted there to be more.

I listened to the audio-book of Sweet Hollow Women and I just have to mention the narrator, Scott Cluthe. This is the first book by him that I have listened to but he was the absolute most perfect voice for this southern story. I enjoyed listening to him immensely.

So between the intriguing story of these women and the wonderful narrator, Sweet Hollow Women was a heartwarming, emotional story that I thoroughly enjoyed.

In the Heart of Windy Pines by Holly Tierney-Bedord ~ My Thoughts and a Giveaway! #InTheHeartOfWindyPines

In the Heart of Windy Pines by Holly Tierney-Bedord
Publication date: November 24th 2019
Genres: Adult, Cozy Mystery

From the author of Kindle Unlimited All-Star winner Sweet Hollow Women comes a new novella featuring characters from Murder at Mistletoe Manor, Carnage at the Christmas Party, and The Port Elspeth Jewelry Making Club!

Klarinda Snow is the innkeeper of Mistletoe Manor in beautiful, remote, Windy Pines, Idaho, where she brings her unique brand of hospitality to the tiny mountain town.

When she finds her inn unexpectedly fully booked on a snowy Tuesday night in November, it brings back memories of a tragedy years before. Before she knows what hit her, she and her trusty team of employees (Myrtle, Pierre, and her new night manager, Josephine), have found themselves back at the task of solving another mystery at Mistletoe Manor!

While this book can be enjoyed as a stand-alone novella, if you plan to read the books in the Windy Pines Mystery series or The Port Elspeth Jewelry Making Club, it’s highly recommended you read those first, as this book contains spoilers that could affect your ability to enjoy them.

My thoughts about In the Heart of Windy Pines ~~

(I love to note the first lines of the books I'm reading. First lines can really grab a reader's attention and I love seeing where the author takes the reader after their first line.)

First line—"At first, Klarinda thought she was seeing a toppled-over snowman."

I have fallen in love with this Windy Pines series and with Holly's stories in general. In the past few days, I have read all of the books connected with this series. I love the fun, somewhat quirky characters and can't wait to see what they are up to next.

Klarinda just wants to run her inn and enjoy a nice quiet life, but that's kind of hard to do when dead bodies always seem to turn up. Sound like a hoot? It definitely is!

Holly is a fairly new-to-me author but I have discovered that I really like her storytelling style. She has now been added to my must-read list of authors.

Pick up the Windy Pines series if you're looking for a delightful, fun mystery—you will not be disappointed!

EXCERPT

In all his life, the man in the Mercedes had never had a car break down on him. Plenty of other catastrophes had befallen him, but a failing automobile was a problem he had no experience with. Lately, however, his life had been full of firsts.

Just as the three-year-old Mercedes-Benz GLS he was driving began slowing and lurching like some old junker, a series of four small, weathered, peeling billboards, each lit up in the failing twilight by a single yellow bulb, came into view.

You’re just two miles from a good night’s sleep!

Stay with us at Mistletoe Manor!

Best dinner in town is at Mistletoe Manor!

Take your next right to Mistletoe Manor. Closed Mondays.

“It’s a… Tuesday!” he decided. Funny how the days ran together now that he was retired.

He put on his blinker and veered off the highway onto Pine Lookout Road. It was a narrow road and only the center of it had been plowed. It swooped down a bit and then rounded a corner, and then went up, up, up. It would have been plenty for any vehicle to take, but his malfunctioning automobile was hardly having it. It sputtered and lurched even more violently. A low guardrail and the chunks of snow and ice on the side of the road were all that separated him from the steeply cascading mountainside on his right. His hands gripped the steering wheel in white-knuckled fear, as he pressed the gas pedal to the floor.

“Come on, you can make it,” he told his vehicle, just as it shot ahead and began behaving normally again. “Thank you. You’ve got this,” he told it, in the same tone he’d used years ago when his kids were little and they were playing soccer or field hockey. “Good job, good job. Keep it up.”

I read Murder at Mistletoe Manor (actually I listened to it, same thing, right?) and loved it. The characters are wonderful, interesting, and fun and I loved spending time with them. You can read my thoughts here. I love how Holly writes and I love reading her stories. I'm excited that In the Heart of Windy Pines is out now so I can travel back to Windy Pines.

Murder at Mistletoe Manor by Holly Tierney-Bedord ~ My Thoughts #MurderAtMistletoeManor

Murder at Mistletoe Manor

Murder at Mistletoe Manor by Holly Tierney-Bedord
Audible Audio, Narrated by Christopher Lane
Print and e-book, 146 pages
Published October 3rd 2019 by Holly Tierney-Bedord

Klarinda Snow is the innkeeper of a beautiful, historic bed and breakfast in Windy Pines, Idaho. Guests come to Mistletoe Manor to escape from their troubles while enjoying the scenic mountain town.

When all seven rooms of the inn get booked on a Tuesday night in December, Klarinda is excited about having so much business, but a little confused as well. After all, her inn normally isn't exactly a destination hotspot.

The guests have barely settled in before strange things begin happening. Is this the most accident prone group of travelers ever, or is someone out for revenge?

My thoughts about Murder at Mistletoe Manor ~~

(I love to note the first lines of the books I'm reading. First lines can really grab a reader's attention and I love seeing where the author takes the reader after their first lines.)

First line—"There were seven guestrooms at Mistletoe Manor, and it was strange for more than one to be booked on a Tuesday in December."

What an unexpected treat it was to listen to this wonderful story! Murder at Mistletoe Manor has everything I love to read at this time of the year—a cast of quirky, interesting characters, humor, revenge, and murder, all centered around a touch of Christmas. Yep, that sounds about right, don't you think?

And let me give a shout out here to the narrator. I loved listening to his voice and he made this entertaining story even more appealing.

I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at the Manor and I really hope I get a chance to visit again. I look forward to getting to know Klarinda better as well as all of the rest of the memorable people of Windy Pines. This was a fun, quick read that will have you clamoring for more!

Thank you to Holly Tierney-Bedord for a copy of Murder at Mistletoe Manor. This is my honest review.

I loved each and every one of these stories and especially loved the interconnected story-lines and characters. They were so much fun and perfect for summertime reading. They were light and quick reads—exactly what I look for in the summer.
