Beneath the Same Stars: A Novel of the 1862 U.S.-Dakota War by Phyllis Cole-Dai
Print and e-book, 330 pages
Published August 2018 by One Sky Press

"Perhaps every woman will lie for the man she lies with."—Sarah Wakefield

August 18, 1862. On the Sioux reservation in southwestern Minnesota, Indians desperate for food and freedom rise up against whites in the region. Sarah Wakefield, the wife of a physician, is taken captive with her two babies. Their fate falls into the hands of the warrior Ćaske, with whom she has slim acquaintance. As war rages, little does she know how entwined their lives will become.

Beneath the Same Stars is the gripping story of two people, caught between worlds, who are willing to do almost anything to defend those they care about—including each other. But the drama is bigger than themselves. Tragic forces have been set in motion.…

Inspired by actual events surrounding the U.S.-Dakota War.

The e-book was only $.99 on Amazon,

My thoughts about Beneath the Same Stars ~~

(I love to note the first lines of the books I'm reading. First lines can really grab a reader's attention and I love seeing where the author takes the reader after their first lines.)

First line—"'Here is where I'm to live? This is where you've brought me?'"

Beneath the Same Stars taught me so much about the U.S.-Dakota War of 1862. So much of our history concerning the interactions and confrontations with the Native Americans is not discussed in depth unless you are taking a U.S. history class. This book gave me a better understanding of the hardships that were endured at the time, by both the whites and the natives and opened my eyes to the unfairness of the way the natives were treated.

I have always been fascinated with the history and stories of the Indian ways. Their world seemed to be almost perfect until the white man came along. The author does a fabulous job of taking the events of this horrible time and creating a story that is well worth reading. She brings the characters come to life and humanizes them so that the reader can empathize with the rough life that they had to live.

As I was reading, I was constantly impressed with the research that Cole-Dai had to have done in order to piece the facts together and create this engrossing story. Before reading Beneath the Same Stars, I wasn't familiar with this war. I learned so much about it and this memorable time in our U.S. history.

I received a copy of Beneath the Same Stars from the author in exchange for my honest review.

Congratulations Phyllis
 on the release today of
Beneath the Same Stars!

About the author

PCD for web

Phyllis has authored or edited nine books in multiple genres, including historical fiction, spiritual nonfiction and poetry. The most recent is Beneath the Same Stars, a novel of the U.S.-Dakota War of 1862 (One Sky Press, 2018). With Ruby R. Wilson she also co-edited Poetry of Presence: An Anthology of Mindfulness Poetry (Grayson Books, 2017).

She is perhaps best known as the co-author of The Emptiness of Our Hands: 47 Days on the Streets, written with James Murray. Bell Sound Books issued the third edition in 2018. The book chronicles the forty-seven days in 1999 that the authors spent living by choice on the streets of Columbus, Ohio, the nation’s fifteenth largest city and home to both at the time. Practicing Presence: Insights from the Streets is a free companion e-book to The Emptiness of Our Hands. In this volume Phyllis elaborates further on practicing presence while continuing to bear witness to those who are homeless. She first published this lightly edited compilation of blog posts in 2009 on the tenth anniversary of her streets experience.

An interview with Phyllis was published in 2014 as a chapter in First We Imagine: 22 Creative South Dakotans Speak on the Subject of Creativity, compiled and edited by John E. Miller.

Poetry of Presence: An Anthology of Mindfulness Poems
Edited by Phyllis Cole-Dai and Ruby R. Wilson
Paperback, 248 pages
Published September 5th 2017 by Grayson Books

Mindfulness poems invite us to bring our whole self to whatever moment we’re in, and truly live it. They encourage us to be more present, more attentive and compassionate, in the living of our days. They grant us a taste of being good enough, just as we are, in this world, just as it is.

Poetry of Presence is a collection of more than 150 mindfulness poems, mostly by contemporary or recent poets. These poems call us to the Here and Now, and help us to dwell there. The Here and Now is all that truly belongs to us, and as the poets say, it’s enough.

This is a book for the times we live in. An inspiring read for lovers of beautiful, accessible poetry, it’s also a valuable resource for literature teachers, spiritual directors, meditators, interfaith clergy, mindfulness trainers, social workers, counselors, poetry therapists, hospice and grief workers, and medical personnel.

Anthologized poets include Yehuda Amichai • Margaret Atwood • Ellen Bass • Wendell Berry • Robert Bly • Billy Collins • Mahmoud Darwish • Thich Nhat Hanh • Joy Harjo • Tony Hoagland • Miroslav Holub • Marie Howe • Erica Jong • Kabir • Galway Kinnell • Ted Kooser • Howard Nemerov • Kathleen Norris • Mary Oliver • Rainer Maria Rilke • Rumi • May Sarton • William Stafford • David Wagoner • Alice Walker and many more.

My thoughts about Poetry of Presence ~~

Poetry of Presence is a beautiful collection of poems, written by many very talented poets. It is a collection to savor and reread. You will find yourself coming back to it over and over as life changes happen, each time gaining more wisdom, advice, and peace from the words within.

Okay, I have to be completely honest here for a bit. I did not enjoy poetry in high school; all that analyzing and pulling each poem apart, trying to discover it's meaning. It just wasn't fun for me as the teacher tried to get us to 'get it'. So, my attitude has always been, I don't do poetry.

Poetry of Presence advises the reader to slow down, read and enjoy each poem, think about how it relates to your life. Some you may 'get' right away—it will speak to you. Others, maybe not. Or maybe not right now. Maybe it will speak to you at a later time. Come back to it.

This is going to be a slow read for me because I am going to take their advice. I am going to savor each poem, marking the ones I love and noting the ones to come back to. Honestly, Poetry of Presence made me rethink my feelings about poetry—I now do poetry.

She has published three poetry chapbooks: Campus Sketches: Images of South Dakota State University in Word and Photograph (2012), At the Rim of the Horizon (Finishing Line Press, 2014), and Maybe the Moon is Falling (South Dakota State Poetry Society, 2014), one of four winners of the Society’s chapbook competition. Fellow writers and great friends, Phyllis and Ruby brought complementary strengths to the creation of Poetry of Presence. Phyllis has practiced mindfulness meditation for more than half her life. Ruby possesses a poet’s eye and ear, and a passionate love of language. They share the belief that mindfulness poetry can help change the world—one poem, one reader, at a time.
