The Wordsmith by Tess Thompson ~ My Thoughts #TheWordsmith @TessWrites

The Wordsmith by Tess Thompson
Historical Fiction, 253 pages
Published September 20, 2022 by 4kids5cats Editions

She didn’t want to fall in love with him. He was too old, too English, and too much her sister’s best friend. Worst of all, he’s promised to another woman. Will duty keep them apart forever?

As a child Adelaide Barnes felt sure she wouldn’t live to be an adult. However, she’s grown into a beautiful and ambitious young woman with big dreams for a literary career. All would be well except for her unwanted feelings for James West.

James West must marry the daughter of one of America’s richest men to save his family from ruin. Unfortunately, he’s fallen in love with someone else. The absolute wrong woman in every way. Choosing Addie would mean the devastation of his family. Yet, how can he walk away from the only woman he’s ever loved?

In the seventh installment of Tess Thompson’s bestselling Emerson Pass Historicals, baby sister Addie Barnes finally gets her story in this heartwarming, clean and wholesome romance, and family saga.

My thoughts about The Wordsmith ~~

(I love to note the first lines of the books I'm reading. First lines can really grab a reader's attention and I love seeing where the author takes the reader after their first line.)

First line—"The air smelled of love that afternoon in the June of 1934, a combination of wild roses and pine needles."

I follow Tess Thompson all over social media and have been aware of her Emerson Pass series. I've watched as each new book was released. I kept thinking 'someday I'm going to dive in and read those books.' Well, when I won The Wordsmith from Goodreads, I figured the time had come to give them a try.

And I was not disappointed. I was immediately dropped into the interesting lives of the Barnes family—more specifically, the life of Adelaide Barnes, who knows who she loves and wants to be with forever but also knows he is promised to another woman. Can the two of them remain 'just friends'?

Ms. Thompson words flow so eloquently on the pages that I got totally immersed in the world she created and I never wanted to leave. The Wordsmith is not the first book in this series but I didn't feel like I was missing anything by starting in the middle. If nothing else, it got me excited to start with book #1 so I can get all caught up with the rest of the family. All of these books will be going on my TRB list, for sure!

I received a copy of The Wordsmith from the publisher via Goodreads and this is my honest opinion.

About the author

Tess Thompson Romance...hometowns and heartstrings.

Tess Thompson is the USA Today Bestselling and award-winning author of contemporary and historical Romantic Women’s Fiction with nearly 40 published titles. When asked to describe her books, she could never figure out what to say that would perfectly sum them up until she landed on, Hometowns and Heartstrings.

She’s married to her prince, Best Husband Ever, and is the mother of their blended family of four kids and five cats. Best Husband Ever is seventeen months younger, which qualifies Tess as a Cougar, a title she wears proudly. Her Bonus Sons are young adults with pretty hair and big brains like their dad. Daughters, better known as Princess One and Two, are teenagers who make their mama proud because they’re kind. They’re also smart, but a mother shouldn’t brag.

Tess loves lazy afternoons watching football, hanging out on the back patio with Best Husband Ever, reading in bed, binge-watching television series, red wine, strong coffee and walks on crisp autumn days. She laughs a little too loudly, never knows what to make for dinner, looks ridiculous kickboxing in an attempt to combat her muffin top, and always complains about the rain even though she chose to live in Seattle.

She’s proud to have grown up in a small town like the ones in her novels. After graduating from the University of Southern California Drama School, she had hopes of becoming an actress but was called instead to writing fiction. She’s grateful to spend most days in her office matchmaking her characters while her favorite cat Mittens (shhh…don’t tell the others) sleeps on the desk.

Blue String by Tess Thompson ~ My Thoughts #BlueString

Blue String

Blue String by Tess Thompson
Series: Blue Mountain #4
Published September 1, 2020

Costume designer Teagan Lanigan only has time to love her work and the young son she’s raising by herself. But when she decides to give up the glitz and glam of the film industry for a quiet life near her family, she’ll face two unique challenges: reconciling with her estranged mother, and trying to forget her fling with a very famous country music star.

Yet when Wyatt Black suddenly appears on Teagan’s porch, forgetting him is no longer an option. The man who wooed her with sensuality and song is just a shell of himself. Fragile and depressed, he’s carrying the weight of the world on his broad shoulders, and Teagan can’t turn him away. But when the pair find themselves in the middle of a murder investigation, it will be more than just Wyatt’s troubles and the duo’s lingering feelings for each other that leave them tied up in knots.

In the fourth installment of USA Today bestselling author Tess Thompson’s Blue Mountain Series, fall in love with the thrills of a genuine small town mystery and the heartwarming redemption that can only be found in the eyes of true love.

My thoughts about Blue String ~~

(I love to note the first lines of the books I'm reading. First lines can really grab a reader's attention and I love seeing where the author takes the reader after their first lines.)

First line—"The herd of elk appeared out of nowhere on a dirt road outside of Peregrine, Idaho."

I haven't read one of Tess Thompson's books in quite awhile and I'm wondering why I waited so long to get back to her books. I was immediately drawn into this story, which is the fourth installment of the Blue Mountain series. Even though it's book 4, I did not at all feel like I was missing anything. I became totally immersed in the lives of Teagan and Wyatt, while also becoming curious to learn more about the other characters.

I loved the sassiness of the relationship between Teagan and Wyatt. They are both pretty headstrong but seem to understand that they are better together than apart. When a dead body is discovered at Teagan's birthday party, the whole family, Wyatt included, comes together to get to the bottom of things.

There is plenty of mystery and intrigue with this wonderful story-line, right along with the relationship building going on between the couple, to make this a page-turner. What a delightful story to get lost in!

I have the other books in the Blue Mountain series waiting on my Kindle and I can't wait to get to them!

I won a copy of Blue String from Goodreads and this is my honest opinion.

On Tour: Tea and Primroses by Tess Thompson

Tea and Primroses

Tea and Primroses by Tess Thompson
Series: The Legley Bay Collection
Kindle Edition, 250 pages
Published February 16th 2014 by Booktrope

Nothing is as it seemed in calm, quaint Legley Bay.

Famous novelist Constance Mansfield lived a seemingly straightforward – if private – and somewhat predictable life. Friends, beloved daughter Sutton, a beautiful home, and all the success an author could wish for. A perfect life….but was it?

When a hit and run accident suddenly takes her mother’s life, Sutton finds hidden secrets with her heartbreak. Emotional walls she assumed Constance had built to protect her privacy may have been to protect something – or someone – else entirely. Family and friends return home for support, including her own lost-love, Declan. He’s the first thing she craves to help her cope with her loss and the questions she’s left with, but he’s also the last person she wants to see. Will he be able to put down roots at last?

Can the loss of true love be the making of a life, or is it destined to be the undoing of everything? When money, power and love combine across time, anything is possible.

My thoughts about Tea and Primroses ~~

I was first introduced to the community of Legley Bay in Caramel and Magnolias, and now in Tea and Primroses, I was able to go back to that wonderful world and meet more interesting people. I loved how some of the characters from Caramel and Magnolias showed up in Tea and Primroses. I felt like I was taking a trip back home and seeing old friends again.

There is so much to the story in this book and Tess does a wonderful job of keeping the story going and keeping it interesting. The reader knows almost from the beginning that there are secrets surrounding Sutton's mother's death. As well as additional, deeper family secrets just waiting to be uncovered.
'"She wrote novels - she wasn't a rock star. And she was so reclusive. I don't think anyone knew where she lived. Especially after what happened to poor Stephen King, you know, getting hit by that crazy driver while he was out walking. She was so careful and nervous." And overprotective of me, she thought. Always worried something was going to happen. This she could hardly be blamed for, given all the loss she'd suffered over the years.'
One of the things I loved about these two stories of Tess' is the memory smells that are mentioned throughout. I love memory smells and it made me smile every time I read the references to them in the stories. Smells can be so powerful.
'Your mother smelled of tea and primroses and I loved her. And you still smell of cinnamon and green apples.'
After her mother dies, Sutton learns so much about her mother's life, so much that explains why her mother lived the way she did and why her own childhood was so hard. Can this knowledge help Sutton find peace and happiness with her life?
'I've learned this now, at the end of my life, that it's the choices you didn't make, the chances you didn't take, that you regret. Not the failures. They pile up as experiences to learn from. And you know, regardless of the outcome, you tried.'
It was so wonderful to take a trip back to Legley Bay. I look forward to spending more time there and getting to know more of the people who live there.

I read Caramel and Magnolias recently and thoroughly enjoyed it!

Caramel and Magnolias by Tess Thompson

Caramel and Magnolias by Tess Thompson
Series: The Legley Bay Collection
Paperback, 246 pages
Published February 1st 2013 by Booktrope Editions

Crushed by a broken heart ten years ago, Cleo Tanner walked away from her acting dreams and now leads a quiet, secluded life in Seattle. Sylvia, her best friend from college, is trapped in a loveless marriage, distraught by her inability to conceive a child – until an adoption agency owner in relentless pursuit of Cleo offers to help.

Just as Sylvia begins to experience a profound love that only a mother can feel, a detective approaches Cleo with disturbing questions about the adoption agency. Determined to protect her friend, Cleo jumps into a dangerous investigation that forces her to confront the ghosts of her past.

Bestselling author Tess Thompson, whose debut novel Riversong touched the hearts of readers worldwide, delivers a captivating and suspenseful tale of the possibilities that await us in life and in love – if we can find the courage to get off the sidelines.

A toast to friendship, motherhood, mended hearts and new beginnings, Caramel and Magnolias reminds us it’s never too late to reawaken the heart.

My thoughts about Caramel and Magnolias ~~

I loved this book and loved my glimpse into the lives of Cleo and Sylvia. It was so easy to become their 'friend'. When I had to walk away from their world (say, to do things like go to work) I very easily was able to pick up right where I left off, just as if I had never left.

Cleo and Sylvia are best friends. But sometimes best friends don't know everything.
'There wasn't a thing they didn't know about one another. Except for one thing - Sylvia's one secret - too big for even Cleo to know.'
And poor Cleo. She had her heart broken and has lived a lonely life for 10 years. Can she finally get over the heart break and get on with her life?
'Lastly, she picked up the slip of paper. The last words he'd ever written to her. Gone for donuts. Gone. Never to return.'
There is friendship, romance, heartbreak, and action. All rolled up in a wonderful, easy to get lost in story.
'If someone took their photo today, what would they see? Cleo knew the lens would not lie. It would capture two women living on the edges of life, waiting and yearning for that which they could not have.'
And I loved the references to the smells of caramel and magnolias throughout the book. I have such a strong sense of memory smells and I loved how that kept coming up.

My favorite passage of the whole book are these lines about the magic of friendship. I like the idea of souls waiting to meet in the physical world to become friends.
'But Cleo was her best friend, no matter all the rest of it. Who understood the magic of friendship? It was not possible to explain how some people made their way into your life as if they'd been there, their soul lurking with yours until bodies met in the physical world. Their friendship was the unraveling of fate.'
About the author

Tess Thompson is a novelist and playwright. She has a BFA in Drama from the University of Southern California.

After some success as a playwright she decided to write a novel, a dream she’d held since childhood. She began working on her first novel, Riversong while her second daughter was eight months old, writing during naptimes and weekends. She considers it a small miracle and the good-nature of her second child (read: a good napper) that it was ever finished. Riversong was released in April 2011 by Booktrope, a Seattle publisher and subsequently became a #1 Nook book and Kindle best seller. Learn more about Booktrope at www.booktrope.com

Like her main character in Riversong, Tess is from a small town in Southern Oregon. She currently lives in Snoqualmie, Washington with her two small daughters where she is inspired daily by the view of the Cascade Mountains from her home office window.

She was an active member of the theatre community in Seattle as an actor and director during the late nineties. In 2000 she wrote her first full-length play, My Lady’s Hand which subsequently won the 2001 first place prize for new work at the Burien Theatre.

A voracious reader, Tess’s favorite thing to do is to curl up on a rainy afternoon and read a novel. She also enjoys movies, theatre, wine and food. She is fed emotionally by her friends and family and cherishes relationships above all else.

Tess will be releasing her second novel, Caramel and Magnolias, in February 2013. She is busy working a historical fiction set in 1930’s Alabama that is based on a short story of her great-great grandmother’s.
