The Wordsmith by Tess Thompson ~ My Thoughts #TheWordsmith @TessWrites

The Wordsmith by Tess Thompson
Historical Fiction, 253 pages
Published September 20, 2022 by 4kids5cats Editions

She didn’t want to fall in love with him. He was too old, too English, and too much her sister’s best friend. Worst of all, he’s promised to another woman. Will duty keep them apart forever?

As a child Adelaide Barnes felt sure she wouldn’t live to be an adult. However, she’s grown into a beautiful and ambitious young woman with big dreams for a literary career. All would be well except for her unwanted feelings for James West.

James West must marry the daughter of one of America’s richest men to save his family from ruin. Unfortunately, he’s fallen in love with someone else. The absolute wrong woman in every way. Choosing Addie would mean the devastation of his family. Yet, how can he walk away from the only woman he’s ever loved?

In the seventh installment of Tess Thompson’s bestselling Emerson Pass Historicals, baby sister Addie Barnes finally gets her story in this heartwarming, clean and wholesome romance, and family saga.

My thoughts about The Wordsmith ~~

(I love to note the first lines of the books I'm reading. First lines can really grab a reader's attention and I love seeing where the author takes the reader after their first line.)

First line—"The air smelled of love that afternoon in the June of 1934, a combination of wild roses and pine needles."

I follow Tess Thompson all over social media and have been aware of her Emerson Pass series. I've watched as each new book was released. I kept thinking 'someday I'm going to dive in and read those books.' Well, when I won The Wordsmith from Goodreads, I figured the time had come to give them a try.

And I was not disappointed. I was immediately dropped into the interesting lives of the Barnes family—more specifically, the life of Adelaide Barnes, who knows who she loves and wants to be with forever but also knows he is promised to another woman. Can the two of them remain 'just friends'?

Ms. Thompson words flow so eloquently on the pages that I got totally immersed in the world she created and I never wanted to leave. The Wordsmith is not the first book in this series but I didn't feel like I was missing anything by starting in the middle. If nothing else, it got me excited to start with book #1 so I can get all caught up with the rest of the family. All of these books will be going on my TRB list, for sure!

I received a copy of The Wordsmith from the publisher via Goodreads and this is my honest opinion.

About the author

Tess Thompson Romance...hometowns and heartstrings.

Tess Thompson is the USA Today Bestselling and award-winning author of contemporary and historical Romantic Women’s Fiction with nearly 40 published titles. When asked to describe her books, she could never figure out what to say that would perfectly sum them up until she landed on, Hometowns and Heartstrings.

She’s married to her prince, Best Husband Ever, and is the mother of their blended family of four kids and five cats. Best Husband Ever is seventeen months younger, which qualifies Tess as a Cougar, a title she wears proudly. Her Bonus Sons are young adults with pretty hair and big brains like their dad. Daughters, better known as Princess One and Two, are teenagers who make their mama proud because they’re kind. They’re also smart, but a mother shouldn’t brag.

Tess loves lazy afternoons watching football, hanging out on the back patio with Best Husband Ever, reading in bed, binge-watching television series, red wine, strong coffee and walks on crisp autumn days. She laughs a little too loudly, never knows what to make for dinner, looks ridiculous kickboxing in an attempt to combat her muffin top, and always complains about the rain even though she chose to live in Seattle.

She’s proud to have grown up in a small town like the ones in her novels. After graduating from the University of Southern California Drama School, she had hopes of becoming an actress but was called instead to writing fiction. She’s grateful to spend most days in her office matchmaking her characters while her favorite cat Mittens (shhh…don’t tell the others) sleeps on the desk.
