On Tour and a Giveaway: The Goddaughter by Melodie Campbell

Gina Gallo is a gemologist who would like nothing better than to run her little jewelry shop. Unfortunately she's also "the Goddaughter," and, as she tells her new friend Pete, "you don't get to choose your relatives." And you can't avoid them when you live in Hamilton and they more or less run the place.

When Gina bumps into Pete at the Art Gallery Gala, sparks fly. So do bullets, when her cousin Tony is taken down by rival mobsters from New York. It turns out Tony was carrying a load of hot gems in the heel of his shoe. When Gina is reluctantly recruited to carry the rocks back to Buffalo, the worst happens: they get stolen. Pete and Gina have no choice but to steal them back, even though philandering politicians, shoe fetishists, and a trio of inept goons stand in their way.

It's all in a day's work, when you're the Goddaughter. ~~ synopsis from Goodreads

My thoughts about The Goddaughter ~~

This book is part of the Rapid Reads series from Orca Book Publishers, which is exactly what it is, a rapid read. The Goddaughter is 134 pages and can easily be read in one sitting. And the story is really good too, so you are going to want to read it in one sitting anyway!

I loved the characters of Gina and Paul. They really seem to be a pair. And this book has it all, the mafia of course, but there is also action, drama, humor and romance. And shoes! Everything you need, right?

I was a little bit disappointed when I got to the end of the book but only because I wished it would have been longer. It would be really great if there is a sequel in the works so we could find out more about Gina and Paul and what happens next. This story has that potential.

Thanks for the great read, Melodie!

About the author

Melodie Campbell has been a bank manager, marketing director, college instructor, comedy writer, and possibly the worst runway model ever.

Melodie got her start writing comedy (stand-up and columns). In 1999, she opened the Canadian Humour Conference in Hamilton. She has over 200 publications, including 40 short stories, and has won 6 awards for short fiction. Her third novel, The Goddaughter (Orca Books), is a comic mob caper. Melodie was a finalist for the 2012 Derringer Award (US) and Arthur Ellis Award (Can), and is the Executive Director of Crime Writers of Canada.

Melodie was invited into the Toronto Press Club in 1994. There is no truth to the rumor that she once did a somersault off the Press Club billiard table.

Where We Belong by Emily Giffin
I haven't spent much time in my car lately, which is where I have been listening to this book. So I am still plugging away at it. It is a good book, it's just going to take me awhile.

Know Thy Neighbor by Shawn Kirsten Maravel
I loved this book ~ I will try to post my thoughts later this week.

The Green Ticket by Samantha March
My stop on the tour was January 1. A great way to start 2013! My thoughts are here.

Room by Emma Donoghue
A very different book, told entirely in the voice of a 5 year old boy. Very interesting and I'm glad I finally got around to reading it. Have you read it? What did you think?

What do you think you will read next?

The Darling Girls by Emma Burstall or
Sara's Promise by Deanna Lynn Sletten
I will be reading either The Darlings Girls or Sara's Promise. T

The Darling Girls is for CLP Blog Tours and my stop will be January 14th. Deanna contacted me over the weekend and asked me to read Sara's Promise. If I receive it soon, it will be bumped to the top of my reading list ~ it sounds so wonderful! I read Memories by Deanna in October and loved it.
