It's Monday! What Are You Reading? March 21, 2016

It's Monday! What Are You Reading? is a place to meet up and share what you have been, are and about to be reading over the week. It's an opportunity to visit other blogs and to comment on their reads. And ... you can add to that ever growing TBR pile! So welcome everyone. This meme started with J Kaye's Blog and then was taken up by Sheila from Book Journey. Sheila then passed it on to Kathryn at the Book Date. And here we are!

More snow yesterday and then sunshine today. Ups and downs but we're getting there. Nice weather is just around the corner, right?

I started putting books up on my new bookshelves. Yay!!

I found a great app called Libib for keeping track of my books. I just scan them into the app from my phone as I put them on the shelves. I set up separate 'libraries' within the app to help me organize them. So far, I have one for 'Special Authors' - those authors I've made a special connection with and whose books hold a special place in my heart. I also have one set up for my 'Book Club' selections. Hopefully this will help me keep track of what I have to read and I won't have them just piled up on a table. And then I have just a plain 'Library' which is basically all the rest of my books. I am sure I will think of additional groups as I go along. Maybe one for ARCs? And ... I think this will be an excellent way for me to find those duplicate copies that I have that I don't even know.

Let me know if you've used this app. I would love to hear what others are doing with it.

Book Spotlight Giveaway! The Dovekeepers by Alice Hoffman

The book I am offering this week is my extra copy of The Dovekeepers. We read it for my book club and I ended up with 2 copies. How does that happen? Anyway, everyone loved the story and we had a great discussion. This was the first book by Alice Hoffman that I had read and I was amazed at the number of people who commented that they love her books. How have I never read her before? I really need to take a closer look at her other stories.

Good luck and be sure to stop back next week!

The Dovekeepers

The Dovekeepers by Alice Hoffman
Paperback, 505 pages
Published April 3rd 2012 by Scribner

The Dovekeepers is Alice Hoffman’s most ambitious and mesmerizing novel, a tour de force of research and imagination.

Nearly two thousand years ago, nine hundred Jews held out for months against armies of Romans on Masada, a mountain in the Judean desert. According to the ancient historian Josephus, two women and five children survived. Based on this tragic and iconic event, Hoffman’s novel is a spellbinding tale of four extraordinarily bold, resourceful, and sensuous women, each of whom has come to Masada by a different path. Yael’s mother died in childbirth, and her father, an expert assassin, never forgave her for that death. Revka, a village baker’s wife, watched the murder of her daughter by Roman soldiers; she brings to Masada her young grandsons, rendered mute by what they have witnessed. Aziza is a warrior’s daughter, raised as a boy, a fearless rider and expert marksman who finds passion with a fellow soldier. Shirah, born in Alexandria, is wise in the ways of ancient magic and medicine, a woman with uncanny insight and power.

The lives of these four complex and fiercely independent women intersect in the desperate days of the siege. All are dovekeepers, and all are also keeping secrets—about who they are, where they come from, who fathered them, and whom they love.

About the author

Alice Hoffman

Alice Hoffman was born in New York City on March 16, 1952 and grew up on Long Island. After graduating from high school in 1969, she attended Adelphi University, from which she received a BA, and then received a Mirrellees Fellowship to the Stanford University Creative Writing Center, which she attended in 1973 and 74, receiving an MA in creative writing.  She currently lives in Boston.

Hoffman’s first novel, Property Of, was written at the age of twenty-one, while she was studying at Stanford, and published shortly thereafter by Farrar Straus and Giroux. She credits her mentor, professor and writer Albert J. Guerard, and his wife, the writer Maclin Bocock Guerard, for helping her to publish her first short story in the magazine Fiction. Editor Ted Solotaroff then contacted her to ask if she had a novel, at which point she quickly began to write what was to become Property Of, a section of which was published in Mr. Solotaroff’s magazine, American Review.

Since that remarkable beginning, Alice Hoffman has become one of our most distinguished novelists. She has published a total of twenty-three novels, three books of short fiction, and eight books for children and young adults. Her novel, Here on Earth, an Oprah Book Club choice, was a modern reworking of some of the themes of Emily Bronte’s masterpiece Wuthering Heights. Practical Magic was made into a Warner film starring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman. Her novel, At Risk, which concerns a family dealing with AIDS, can be found on the reading lists of many universities, colleges and secondary schools. Hoffman’s advance from Local Girls, a collection of inter-related fictions about love and loss on Long Island, was donated to help create the Hoffman Breast Center at Mt. Auburn Hospital in Cambridge, MA. Blackbird House is a book of stories centering around an old farm on Cape Cod. Hoffman’s recent books include Aquamarine and Indigo, novels for pre-teens, and The New York Times bestsellers The River King, Blue Diary, The Probable Future, and The Ice Queen. Green Angel, a post-apocalyptic fairy tale about loss and love, was published by Scholastic and The Foretelling, a book about an Amazon girl in the Bronze Age, was published by Little Brown. In 2007 Little Brown published the teen novel Incantation, a story about hidden Jews during the Spanish Inquisition, which Publishers Weekly has chosen as one of the best books of the year. Her most recent novels include The Third Angel, The Story Sisters, the teen novel, Green Witch, a sequel to her popular post-apocalyptic fairy tale, Green Angel. The Red Garden, published in 2011, is a collection of linked fictions about a small town in Massachusetts where a garden holds the secrets of many lives.

Excerpt

Without taking time to consider the ramifications of her actions, Scottie rose from her hiding place, focused her zoom lens, and held the shutter button down while her camera captured the embrace, the kiss, and the subjects' shocked expressions in one continuous stream of photographs.

When he finally noticed Scottie, Shorty yelled, "Hey! What do you think you're doing?"

Scottie took off running toward the street.

"Get that girl! Don't let her out of your sight!"

An interview with Ashley Farley
on her writing process.

Do you write or type?
I type! There are plenty of authors who still sit down and put pen to paper. But that is definitely not for me. Being able to move sentences and paragraphs around on the screen saves an enormous amount of time. I would be lost without spellcheck and my dictionary apps.

Do you begin planning your novel with a plot line or a character?
A character. I imagine my character, and once I blow life into her, she shows me the way.

Do your characters resemble people you know?
Not intentionally, but it’s innate. As I get inside my character’s heads, I can’t help but portray a little bit of myself in each of them. I’m always on the lookout for interesting characteristics in the people I encounter everyday.

Do you use your experiences in real life for your novels?
Not the big picture events, but I often use an anecdote from my real life to add humor or to make a situation feel more genuine, more legit.

What is your writing process? Are you a plotter or a panster?
For the most part I’d have to say I’m a panster, but there are definitely times when I need to use outlines to keep my facts straight and verify that my story flows. I’m fortunate to belong to a club that has an outdoor heated pool. I swim laps every day, all year long, even when it’s snowing. This peace and quite time allows me the opportunity to mentally plot what I’m going to write that day, to make up scenes and devise sentences. Then, when I sit down at my computer later in the morning, the words flow much quicker and easier. Free flow writing, on the other hand, helps when I’m suffering from writer’s block. Good material comes from these sessions, from just typing out whatever comes to mind.

What is your main objective in your writing?
I write the types of novels I like to read. Readers are attracted to my books because of the fast pace. My goal is to create interesting characters with the right amount of description and lots of action. If my readers keep turning the pages well into the night, then I have done my job.

How many hours do you spend writing a day?
Writing has become a full time job for me. Seven days a week, much to my husband’s chagrin. The process of writing takes an enormous amount of time. When I’m not writing, I’m marketing or working the social media networks. I love every minute of it.

What is your editing process?
Getting through the first draft is challenging. Starting with a blank page every day taxes the imagination. The process gets easier, and more exciting and fun, with each subsequent draft. The story takes on a life of its own and things begin to fall into place. My favorite draft is the last edit, the fine-tune edit, when I program my computer to read the manuscript back to me.

Do you always know how your story will end?
I never know how my story will end, oftentimes until I get to the last chapter in my first draft. I bring my characters to life, give them the big picture plot, and let them tell me the story.

Can you speak to the diversity in your books?
Saving Ben is a new adult book. Her Sister’s Shoes is women’s fiction. And Breaking the Story is romance. I didn’t set out to write novels that cross genres. It just happened that way. Again, I created the characters that spoke to me, and I let them do the rest.

About the author

Ann Herrick is the author of several books and short stories for kids and teens. Her books have won several awards, such as the ALA Recommended Book for Reluctant Readers award and an IRA/CBC Children’s Choice award. Her stories have appeared in magazines such as 'Teen, Listen, The Single Parent, Children's Digest and The Friends.

Ann Herrick grew up in Connecticut, where she graduated from The Morgan School and Quinnipiac University. She now lives in Oregon with her husband, who was her high-school sweetheart. Their wonderful daughter is grown, married and gainfully employed, and has given Ann her only grand-dog, Puff, a bloodhound-rottweiller-beagle mix. While she misses the East Coast, especially houses built before 1900, she enjoys the green valleys, fresh air and low humidity in the Willamette Valley of Oregon. Ann loves cats, walking and working in her back yard. In addition to stories and books for children and young adults, Ann also writes copy for humorous and conventional greeting cards."

The vast majority of Ann's books are HFN (Happily For Now, with the possibility of Happily Ever After. The characters are in their teens, after all, so Ever After would be a *really* long time.) Two books have positive endings, but not the standard HFN or HEA, but with those possibilities if the reader reads very carefully between the lines at the end of the story.

My thoughts about Breaking the Story ~~

I first learned about Scottie Darden in Ashley's novella, Merry Mary. I loved that story and I love the character of Scottie. She is one tough woman, an investigative journalist who is not afraid of taking risks. I knew I wanted to read more about her and her adventures.

Breaking the Story is a wonderful, page turning, on the edge of my seat type of story that I couldn't put down. Scottie, being the photojournalist she is, just needs to take that one perfect photo to skyrocket her career. But she captures a shot that lands her in a whole bunch of trouble; her life is in danger kind of trouble.

And then along comes Guy Jordan. Is he the man to help her out of this tight and dangerous situation? Or does he, himself, present a whole other problem? She's not sure who she can trust anymore.

I loved this story as I have loved everything else that Ashley has written and I really hope Ashley has plans to make this a series. I am looking forward to more adventures with Scottie. She is a wonderful main character and I think this is a great beginning to what could be an amazing series!

Excerpt

Guy navigated his way through the crowd to where Scottie was seated. "Well now, isn't this a coincidence?" he said.

She looked up from her martini. "Unless, of course, you're stalking me."

"Ouch. Hostile." He took a step back. "What happened to you in the hours since we last met?"

She jabbed at the olive with the pick in her martini. "Trust me, you don't want to know."

"Oh, but I do," he said, placing his hand over his heart. "The way I remember it, you owe me a drink for changing your tire. You even said you should buy it."

"All right, fine." When the woman next to her got up and left, Scottie extended an empty hand to the bar stool. "You might as well sit down. I'll buy you a drink. Then we'll be even."

Guy slid onto the bar stool and signaled the bartender. "I'll have a Dewars on the rocks. And bring the lady another of whatever she's having." He glanced down at

her glass. "What are you having?"

"Tequila martinis. My third."

"Whoa. What's with the serious mood? You might as well tell me. I'll keep guessing until you do."

She drained the last of her drink and set the glass down on the bar. "Trust me, you don't want to hear this drama."

"Why don't you let me make that decision?"
