The Promise Between Us
Print and e-book, 350 pages
Published: January 16th 2018 by Lake Union Publishing
From the bestselling author of The Perfect Son comes a hopeful tale of redemption, renewal, and the promise of love.
Metal artist Katie Mack is living a lie. Nine years ago she ran away from her family in Raleigh, North Carolina, consumed by the irrational fear that she would harm Maisie, her newborn daughter. Over time she’s come to grips with the mental illness that nearly destroyed her, and now funnels her pain into her art. Despite longing for Maisie, Katie honors an agreement with the husband she left behind—to change her name and never return.
But when she and Maisie accidentally reunite, Katie can’t ignore the familiarity of her child’s compulsive behavior. Worse, Maisie worries obsessively about bad things happening to her pregnant stepmom. Katie has the power to help, but can she reconnect with the family she abandoned?
To protect Maisie, Katie must face the fears that drove her from home, accept the possibility of love, and risk exposing her heart-wrenching secret.
My thoughts about The Promise Between Us ~~
(I love to note the first lines of the books I'm reading. First lines can really grab a reader's attention and I love seeing where the author takes the reader after their first line.)
First lines—"Crouched in the corner of my baby girl's bedroom, we both shake: the three-legged mutt and the mother with a colony of fire ants multiplying in her brain. Hardly a five-star protection squad, but we would die to keep Maisie safe."
Okay, so I was totally hooked after the first chapter—so intense and a bit confusing. And now I know that's how a person with OCD lives and feels. This was a very enlightening look into the world of OCD and small glimpse of what it's like to have it rule your world.
The Promise Between Us is not a play-by-play book on how to survive and function. It's a look at a family who is trying to figure it out and lead a normal life. Katie runs away from her family thinking she is protecting them. Years later, as she comes in contact with her daughter Maisie again, she finds out that there is no running away from the turmoil that's in her head. And she realizes she needs to be there for Maisie, to help her learn how to cope with the 'voice'.
This is the first book by this author that I've read but I'll definitely be reading more. I like her writing style and and the way she makes her characters feel real to me
