My Ex-Life
by Stephen McCauley
ARC ~ Published May 2018

The time for Stephen McCauley's breakout novel has come and My Ex-Life is it in a major way. A delicious novel for fans of Tom Perrotta, Maria Semple, and Cynthia D'Aprix Sweeney about how sometimes the only way to move forward is to go back.

David Hedges’s life is coming apart at the seams. His job helping San Francisco rich kids get into the colleges of their (parents’) choice is exasperating; his younger boyfriend has left him; and the beloved carriage house he rents is being sold. His solace is a Thai takeout joint that delivers 24/7.

The last person he expects to hear from is Julie Fiske. It’s been decades since they’ve spoken, and he’s relieved to hear she’s recovered from her brief, misguided first marriage. To him.

Julie definitely doesn’t have a problem with marijuana (she’s given it up completely, so it doesn’t matter if she gets stoned almost daily) and the Airbnb she’s running out of her seaside house north of Boston is neither shabby nor illegal. And she has two whole months to come up with the money to buy said house from her second husband before their divorce is finalized. She’d just like David’s help organizing college plans for her 17-year-old daughter.

That would be Mandy. To quote Barry Manilow, Oh Mandy. While she knows she’s smarter than most of the kids in her school, she can’t figure out why she’s making so many incredibly dumb and increasingly dangerous choices.

When David flies east, they find themselves living under the same roof (one David needs to repair). David and Julie pick up exactly where they left off thirty years ago―they’re still best friends who can finish each other’s sentences. But there’s one broken bit between them that no amount of home renovations will fix.

In prose filled with hilarious and heartbreakingly accurate one-liners, Stephen McCauley has written a novel that examines how we define home, family, and love. Be prepared to laugh, shed a few tears, and have thoughts of your own ex-life triggered. (Throw pillows optional.)

Release Day! Her Perfect Life by Hank Phillippi Ryan ~ My Thoughts #HerPerfectLife #NetGalley

 Happy Release Day!!

Congrats Hank
on the release today of
Her Perfect Life!

Her Perfect Life by Hank Phillippi Ryan
Mystery Thriller, 336 pages
Published September 14, 2021 by Forge Books

The next thrilling standalone novel by USA Today bestselling author Hank Phillippi Ryan.

Everyone knows Lily Atwood—and that may be her biggest problem. The beloved television reporter has it all—fame, fortune, Emmys, an adorable seven-year-old daughter, and the hashtag her loving fans created: PerfectLily. To keep it all she has to do is protect one life-changing secret.

Her own.

Lily has an anonymous source who feeds her story tips—but suddenly, the source begins telling Lily inside information about her own life. How does he—or she—know the truth?

Lily understands that no one reveals a secret unless they have a reason. Now she’s terrified someone is determined to destroy her world—and with it, everyone and everything she holds dear.

How much will she risk to keep her perfect life?

My thoughts about Her Perfect Life ~~

(I love to note the first lines of the books I'm reading. First lines can really grab a reader's attention and I love seeing where the author takes the reader after their first line.)

First line—"They say you can't choose your family, but if you could, I would still have chosen Cassie."

I knew when I started Her Perfect Life that I would need to settle in and prepare for a wild ride. And I was not disappointed.

Lily has the perfect life with her perfect job and perfect daughter. Then she starts receiving messages that could ruin that perfectness. How dare someone do that to #PerfectLily? As her life starts to unravel, secrets come to the surface and maybe the perfect sister she had been idolizing for all those years wasn't so perfect.

It was interesting to watch Lily struggle with getting to the truth, which could ruin her, or avoiding it at all costs, so she could continue with the perfect life she had created. Sometimes I just wanted to shake her! But seriously, who was working with her and who was working against her?

Her Perfect Life is another exciting thriller by Hank Phillippi Ryan. Her books are always a great escape and I'm looking forward to whatever she creates next.

I received a copy of Her Perfect Life via NetGalley and this is my honest opinion.

My thoughts about The First to Lie ~~

(I love to note the first lines of the books I'm reading. First lines can really grab a reader's attention and I love seeing where the author takes the reader after their first line.)

First line—"Lies have a complicated half-life."

Oh wow! So many lies, secrets, deceit, and revenge all wrapped up in this amazing story. The plot and characters were so twisted, it was sometimes hard to know who was who and what their agenda was. This is not by any means a negative about this book, it's what drove me to keep reading.

I knew it would all make sense in the end—I just had to be patient—but my jaw dropped whenever one of the characters swerved in a new direction. After all the twists and turns, the author wraps up the story with an unexpected but satisfying ending.

I'm not sure why I haven't read anything by this author until now but this book will definitely not be my last. I am impressed with the depth of her writing and the intense intrigue of this story. Hank Phillippi Ryan has just been added my list of must-read authors.

I highly recommend The First to Lie for an edge-of-your seat thriller that will keep you guessing to the very end.

I received and ARC of The First to Lie and this is my honest opinion.
