Release Day! Hip Deep in Bad Company by Ann Charles & Sam Lucky @AnnWCharles

Happy Release Day!

Congrats Ann & Sam
on the release today of
Hip Deep in Bad Company!

Hip Deep in Bad Company by Ann Charles & Sam Lucky
(Deadwood Undertaker #5)
Paranormal, Mystery, 380 pages
Published June 28, 2024 by Ann Charles

I ran freight and wagon trains for years from Missouri to Santa Fe. Courted death from arrows to snake bites, drowning to dysentery, each and every trip. Came through all that only to be dealt a bad hand in Deadwood. Got myself killed.

Now the Grim Reaper is swinging for my boys, too. They’re men, actually, and I won’t let them end up dead like me. Same goes for their friends, Clementine the Amazon and Hank Varney.

First thing, we need to reckon with that smokey Egyptian devil. His no-good henchmen are searching for something underneath the streets of Deadwood. One thing’s for sure—it’s not gold.

Second, the Pinkertons tracked my boys all the way to the Black Hills. I figured they would, but hoped they wouldn’t. My boys will end up in jail yet.

Not so long ago, Deadwood seemed like a good place to set up a freight office, but now the Hills are hip deep in bad company. Sooner or later, the devils around here are going to kill us all. Well, not all, unless you can kill a fella twice.

“I’m a ghost. A specter, some would say. A spirit. A shade, the hallucination of a compromised mind. Whatever moniker you prefer, that’s me. Excepting that last one.” ~ Uncle Morton

Catawampus Christmas Carol by Ann Charles and Sam Lucky ~ My Thoughts #AnnCharles #SamLucky #CatawampusChristmasCarol

Catawampus Christmas Carol

Catawampus Christmas Carol
by Ann Charles and Sam Lucky
Series: Deadwood Undertaker Series Book 3.5
Published November 30, 2020 by Ann Charles & Sam Lucky

*Catawampus (adj.): 1.) Fierce, savage 2.) Askew, awry

It’s a cold and snowy Christmas Eve in the rowdy mining town of Deadwood in the Dakota Territory. Rather than enjoy some drinks in front of a warm fire with her friends, contracted Slayer Clementine Johanssen has her horse saddled and weapons packed to head out into the hills and hunt down some deadly scallywags—alone. When her friends catch wind of her intentions, they set out to waylay her long enough to change her way of thinking … in spite of her mule-headedness.

Reminiscent of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, this catawampus tale will add a heartening dose of fun and camaraderie to your holiday!

Note: This is book 3.5 of the Deadwood Undertaker Series

From the bestselling, multiple award-winning, humorous Deadwood Mystery series comes a new herd of tales set in the same Deadwood stomping grounds, only back in the days when the Old West town was young.

My thoughts about Catawampus Christmas Carol ~~

(I love to note the first lines of the books I'm reading. First lines can really grab a reader's attention and I love seeing where the author takes the reader after their first lines.)

First line—"Once upon a time ... Actually it was Christmas Eve, 1876 in the rough and tumble mining town of Deadwood (Dakota Territory) but anyway ..."

Are you like me and like things that are a bit unusual? A little off the wall? Well, I've got the perfect Christmas story for you!

Catawampus Christmas Carol is not your ordinary holiday read but it was such a fun treat. Reading a book set in the old west of Deadwood and centering around an executioner sounds like the perfect way to spend the days before Christmas, don't you think? It really is a fun, feel-good story that will have you laughing out loud at the character's shenanigan's.

I love Ann Charles and her Deadwood mystery series! And I love these new wacky characters that she and Sam Lucky have introduced us to in this Undertaker series. Each book just gets better and better.

And I'll leave you with one last, very important word - Prudence! 😉 💕

One thing is for certain, the trouble he and his compadres chance upon deep in the trees is a LONG way from ordinary.

My thoughts about Life at the Coffin Joint ~~

(I love to note the first lines of the books I'm reading. First lines can really grab a reader's attention and I love seeing where the author takes the reader after their first lines.)

First line—"'I'm starting to see why you call this town the last lawless frontier,' Clementine said, bending over the naked bear-sized man laid out on her examination table."

I absolutely love Ann's Deadwood mystery series and I was so excited to hear that she and her husband were embarking on this new series, the Deadwood Undertaker Series, which is sort of a spin-off of her original series. This new series is set in Deadwood in the late 1800's and takes the reader back to the Old West.

What I love about this new series—aside from cracking up over Ann's amazing, fun sense of humor and the zany, lovable characters she creates—is that I get the background story that could, maybe, sort of, explain the craziness that Violet, Doc, Harvey, and all the rest are dealing with in present time in Ann's Deadwood series. It's so much fun to discover the connections between the two worlds.

I devoured Life at the Coffin Joint and can't wait for the new installment this summer when book #2 comes out!
