My thoughts about Résistance ~~

(I love to note the first lines of the books I'm reading. First lines can really grab a reader's attention and I love seeing where the author takes the reader after their first lines.)

First line—"The backstage stinks of sweat and misplaced hope."

I love this whole series and Résistance is a wonderful story showcasing the beauty, talent. and strength of Kamali LeClair. She is an amazing dancer and uses her gift to further her cause.

Résistance dropped me right back into the Singularity world, where the concept of that world is so foreign to me, but one that Susan Kaye Quinn has made very real. It is so easy to become engrossed in her creative story-lines.

The Singularity series and the Stories of Singularity are amazing stories that I highly recommend. You really should read them!

(I love to note the first lines of the books I'm reading. First lines can really grab a reader's attention and I love seeing where the author takes the reader after their first lines.)

First line—"I walk the rows of strawberries, absorbed in their beauty. They perfume the air, a triumphant blast that dims the sharp steel of pickers and dank must of earth.They have arrived!"

I sometimes find it a bit challenging to write reviews of short stories or novella. You're reading along and then boom, it's over. But Susan has written a powerful story and it's amazing to me how she can write something with so much impact in so few words. This is a story that made me stop and think long after I finished the last page.

Susan's books (e.g., her SciFi, Steampunk, YA) have taken me totally outside of my usual reading genres and I have loved everything I have read by her.... and I'm pretty sure I've read just about everything she's written so far.

The Singularity series and the Stories of Singularity are amazing and I highly recommend them. You really should read them!

My thoughts about Awakening ~~

First line—"I dream of the day when I'm the only sister left. Then I pray it never comes."

This whole Singularity series that Susan Kaye Quinn has written has taken me down the path of a genre I typically don't read—science fiction. But I am a huge fan of hers so I just had to read the first one and I have been hooked on this series ever since.

I think Awakening is probably my favorite Singularity story so far. I loved the character of Sister Amara, most of all her strength and her compassion for the other sisters. Along with the great characters, there is a lot of action packed into this novella. It's a quick read that will leave you wanting more!

My thoughts about Restore ~~

I love the Singularity series that Susan Kaye Quinn is in the process of writing. Restore is a short story that gives a little tease of that singularity world while we wait for the next book. I just love this series, as I have loved all of Susan's other works. And even though this story is great, it leaves me wanting more! Reporting it could mean reassignment to the Outer Belt… but probing the mystery further threatens to unlock something that might have been better left... contained.

My thoughts about Containment ~~

Of the four stories, I think this one was my favorite. It took me a bit to figure out what was going on and where the story was going but it all started to make sense. I was rooting for the 'contained' but also left me wondering how far away we are from machines trying to escape the worlds we have put them in.

'I am like them, but I am not of them. And I never truly forget I'm the one thing they fear most of all: something entirely new.'

Defiance

Most of humanity has ascended into hyper-intelligent human/machine hybrids, but legacy humans like Cyrus Kowalski are used to skirting the laws they’ve laid down—after all, he knows the ascenders only pretend to care about the legacy pets they keep. But when a woman Cyrus loves like a mother is stricken by a disease the ascenders refuse to cure, he has to decide how far he can go without getting banished from the legacy city that’s always been his home.

My thoughts about Defiance ~~

I loved reading Defiance because it gives us Cyrus' perspective of the events in The Legacy Human, book #1 in the Singularity Series. We see the depths he is willing to go to in order to save Eli's mom, a woman who is like a mom to him. I love it when authors give us deeper glimpses into minor character's lives.

'But I'm going to do better than that. I'm going to win this by refusing to play by the ascender's rules ... not this time, and really, not ever again. All I have to do is not get caught.'

Augment

Miriam is a jiv—an augmented warrior willing to give her life for the Maker cause—and she’s more than ready to get in the ring and fight for the latest mod. If she wins, she’ll have everything she needs to offer herself up for the Makers’ most dangerous augment of all. The only problem? No one has yet survived it. Either she’ll become the Makers’ latest failed experiment—or the leap toward salvation her people desperately need.

My thoughts about Augment ~~

This story is very action packed with Miriam out to prove that she's got what it takes to do what no one else has ever done. And what is her real motive? Is she just trying to get back at the ascenders because they would not save her mom when they could have? And will she survive the experiment she was chosen to undergo?

Wow! The ending of this one left me wanting more.

'I believe the ascenders lost their souls in their brand of ascendence, because in the heady power of expanding their minds, they imagined themselves to be gods. And being gods, they could no longer be bothered with being human.'

My thoughts about Restore ~~ 

I love the Singularity series that Susan Kaye Quinn is in the process of wrriting. Restore is a short story that gives a little tease of that singularity world while we wait for the next book. I just love this series, as I have loved all of Susan's other works. And even though this story is great, it leaves me wanting more! I can't wait for the next story in this series.

About the author

Susan Kaye Quinn grew up in California, where she wrote snippets of stories and passed them to her friends during class. Her teachers pretended not to notice and only confiscated her stories a couple times.

Susan left writing behind to pursue a bunch of engineering degrees, but she was drawn back to writing by an irresistible urge to share her stories with her niece, her kids, and all the wonderful friends she’s met along the way.

She doesn’t have to sneak her notes anymore, which is too bad.

Susan writes from the Chicago suburbs with her three boys, two cats, and one husband. Which, it turns out, is exactly as a much as she can handle.
