The Space Between

The Space Between by Dete Meserve
Print and e-book, 300 pages
Published July 24th 2018 by Lake Union Publishing

The truth isn’t what it seems in this stirring novel of suspense.

After presenting a major scientific breakthrough to a rapt audience across the country, renowned astronomer Sarah Mayfield returns home to a disturbing discovery. Her husband, Ben, a Los Angeles restaurateur, has disappeared, leaving behind an unexplained bank deposit of a million dollars, a loaded Glock in the nightstand, and a video security system that’s been wiped clean. The only answers their son, Zack, can offer are the last words his father said to him: keep the doors locked and set the alarm.

Sarah’s marriage was more troubled than anyone suspected, but now she is afraid that her husband’s recent past could be darker than she dares to admit. Suspecting that nothing about Ben’s vanishing is what it seems, Sarah must delve into the space between old memories, newfound fears, and misleading clues to piece together the mystery of her husband’s disappearance—and find what she hopes in her heart is the truth.

My thoughts about The Space Between ~~

(I love to note the first lines of the books I'm reading. First lines can really grab a reader's attention and I love seeing where the author takes the reader after their first lines.)

First line—"'What's wrong?' I asked. Ben sat on the leather couch, his blue eyes planet-sized. Serious. I closed the cabin door behind me, shutting out the cold wind that whipped the trees outside, and dumped an armful of firewood on the hearth."

I've read all of Dete's books and I've loved them all. This one blew me away, on so many levels. As I was reading The Space Between, I had no idea where or how the story was going to end. I went back and forth, not knowing what to believe. What a page turner!

The main character, Sarah, is a very strong person, a scientist who questions everything. She's not one to just accept those things that appear to be fact but questions everything she hears and learns. When she comes home and discovers her husband is missing and could be in danger—or could possibly be a danger to others—she keeps digging for the facts to find out the truth. She has such faith in her husband and doesn't want to doubt him but all the evidence is not in his favor. I had a hard time believing in him myself, but I wanted to trust her feelings. What an amazing women she is!

I also loved the knowledge I gained about space, NASA, and the constellations from the story within the story. Sarah is a renowned scientist who recently made a major scientific breakthrough. We learn so much about all of that and all about the possibilities that are still to be discovered in space. There is some serious information there and it was all fascinating!

The Space Between is definitely a book I'll highly recommend. I guarantee you'll not be able to put it down!!

It's Monday! What Are You Reading? June 18, 2018

It's Monday! What Are You Reading? is a place to meet up and share what you have been, are and about to be reading over the week. It's an opportunity to visit other blogs and to comment on their reads. And ... you can add to that ever growing TBR pile! So welcome everyone. This meme started with J Kaye's Blog and then was taken up by Sheila from Book Journey. Sheila then passed it on to Kathryn at the Book Date. And here we are!

It's been two weeks since my knee surgery. I haven't gotten a lot of reading done and I still need to catch up on my reviews. I am feeling better every day and am finally getting my reading mojo back. I have four more weeks off of work so I'm making it my goal to, not only rehab my knee as best I can, but to also catch up on my review TBR list and post all the reviews for the books I have finished. Lofty goals maybe but I can do it!!

Thanks for stopping by. I hope you all have a good week. Happy reading!

It's Monday! What Are You Reading? June 4, 2018

This is two weeks worth of reads since I didn't get a chance to post last week.

At the time this post is scheduled to go live, I will be undergoing knee surgery. We are hoping it will be a partial knee instead of a total knee replacement so send positive thoughts my way. Anyway, with the lead up to surgery and the busy, holiday weekend last week (4 days babysitting the 4yo grandson), my reading and blogging life has been in kind of a slump. It's been hard to concentrate, what with thinking about the surgery and also being in pain like I have been. It's been an eye-opener to find out how much I was relying on ibuprofen for pain management when I have had to go without it. this past week leading up to surgery.

I have a lot of reviews to catch up on as well as getting my reading mojo back. I apologize to any authors who are waiting on me. It's been hard to be upbeat and complimentary about the fabulous books I've been reading right now. I'll get back on track soon and will get all caught up.

Thanks for stopping by. I hope you all have a good week. Happy reading!

Book Blitz: The Space Between by Nikki Mathis Thompson, Some Teasers, and a Couple of Giveaways!

The Space Between

The Space Between by Nikki Mathis Thompson
Publication date: March 20th 2015
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance

Georgia Bristol’s life hasn’t turned out the way she’d imagined…but it’s a good life.

Despite that fact, she finds herself yearning for something she can’t define. Haunted by the choices of her youth.

Regrets. Everyone has them. What if? Everyone wonders at times.

Lost in town a few heartbeats shy of deserted, Georgia encounters a mysterious woman who gives her a second chance to regain the life she thought she missed out on.

Some say getting lost is the best way to find where you’re going. And sometimes everything must be stripped away before you realize that what you have, is what you wanted all along.

The Space Between is one woman’s unconventional journey to regain what she holds dear, filled with heartbreak, friendship, and love. A thought provoking tale that will have you relating to her struggles and celebrating her triumphs.

Teasers

'The dirt covered ground surrounding the bon fire was full of bodies—mingling, flirting, and drinking. She heard a shrill squeal and splash behind her. Why was she here again? Why wasn’t she under her covers reading, where she could be living Elizabeth Bennet’s life?  In theory, she should be enjoying herself. She was college bound after all, leaving the dregs of this podunk town far behind. But recent events had shaken her confidence. Recent events had made her question whether she had the strength to make it on her own, college and a new city. A city that had more than a Shell Station and a Dairy Queen.'

'Alcohol and a broken heart proved to be a toxic combination. In the months and years that followed she'd often wonder how her life would’ve been different if she’d stayed home or turned Nate down and kept to the shadows of the oak tree that night. But pondering the events that had already come to pass was an act of futility and never offered her anything other than frustration.'

'As a mom she was used to wearing many hats, while using both hands.'

'Men, either were proficient at faking unconsciousness, or became deaf after midnight.'

'Sometimes she came with a scream, sometimes a whimper…sometimes not all.'

'Men were notoriously obtuse when it came to a woman’s complex emotions. Whether the male sex was truly in the dark, or played at it flawlessly, would most likely remain a mystery.'

'She’d give anything to lose the uneasy feeling just beneath her skin. It crawled and itched. Kept her up at night. Uncertainty, not of what tomorrow would bring, but what she wanted from it.'

'They always joked about who would be the hotter mom when their kids married each other. Lucy said tan skin ages slower, so she would win hands down since Georgia’s “pasty white face will crack like a pie crust.” Georgia always said she would look statuesque and lean no matter her age, while Lucy’s “short veiny legs will make her look like a Hispanic hobbit in drag.”'

About the author

Nikki Mathis Thompson spent her formative years singing, dancing and creating her own world of make-believe. From an early age she developed a love of reading that has grown exponentially to near addiction. She has a business degree from the University of Texas at Dallas. Her degree looks great in the frame, but hasn't been utilized in years. She gladly left the cubicle life behind to raise her daughter and a son was added to the mix some years later.

You can find her devouring a book while drinking a glass of wine, doing her part to save the planet or lip- synching to her favorite songs while running through her suburb. She lives outside of Dallas with her family. Rebound is her first novel.
