It's Monday! What Are You Reading? October 2, 2017

It's Monday! What Are You Reading? is a place to meet up and share what you have been, are and about to be reading over the week. It's an opportunity to visit other blogs and to comment on their reads. And ... you can add to that ever growing TBR pile! So welcome everyone. This meme started with J Kaye's Blog and then was taken up by Sheila from Book Journey. Sheila then passed it on to Kathryn at the Book Date. And here we are!

Another busy week and weekend. Stuff going on every night, with grandkiddo duty a couple of evenings. One of the highlights of the week was Wednesday night. I had dinner that night with three of my friends.

The four of us became friends because we were each a friend of a very special person, Kris. She passed away a year and half ago from cancer (I HATE CANCER!!) and we vowed to her that we would continue our friendship, even though she was gone. We ate, drank, talked, laughed, and supported each other for over 3 hours. It had been too long and we have now set a time each month to get together—it's our dinner club. Kris was notorious for her 'clubs'. It was her way of staying connected to her friends. Do you have friends who you make an effort to get together with on a regular basis. Good friends are so important!

My book club met on Thursday night to discuss The Zookeeper's Daughter. Have you read it or seen the movie? Be sure and enter my giveaway to win a copy of the book!

And then Friday through Sunday, we were out of town for my daughter's wedding. It was a small celebration but it was a packed weekend. It was fun spending time with family and it is awesome to see her so happy. 💕

Thanks for stopping by. I hope you all have a good week. Happy reading!

Book Spotlight Giveaway! The Zookeeper's Wife by Diane Ackerman

I have sooooo many books! The Book Spotlight Giveaway feature that I post every Saturday is a way for me to clear my shelves and to share some of the many books I have. This feature is a way for my to cull my collection and to give someone else the opportunity to enjoy these treasures.

****************************

The book I am featuring this week is my recent book club selection. It was a good read and we had a great discussion. It really is amazing to think about what people and animals had to endure during the war just to stay alive—and how mean and nasty people can be to other people. This story was recently made into a movie which released in March.

Good luck and be sure to stop back next week!

The Zookeeper's Wife

The Zookeeper's Wife
by Diane Ackerman

Paperback, 384 pages
Published September 17th 2008 by W. W. Norton & Company

The New York Times bestseller: a true story in which the keepers of the Warsaw Zoo saved hundreds of people from Nazi hands.

When Germany invaded Poland, Stuka bombers devastated Warsaw—and the city's zoo along with it. With most of their animals dead, zookeepers Jan and Antonina Zabinski began smuggling Jews into empty cages. Another dozen "guests" hid inside the Zabinskis' villa, emerging after dark for dinner, socializing, and, during rare moments of calm, piano concerts. Jan, active in the Polish resistance, kept ammunition buried in the elephant enclosure and stashed explosives in the animal hospital.

Meanwhile, Antonina kept her unusual household afloat, caring for both its human and its animal inhabitants—otters, a badger, hyena pups, lynxes. With her exuberant prose and exquisite sensitivity to the natural world, Diane Ackerman engages us viscerally in the lives of the zoo animals, their keepers, and their hidden visitors. She shows us how Antonina refused to give in to the penetrating fear of discovery, keeping alive an atmosphere of play and innocence even as Europe crumbled around her.

It's been a slow reading week for me this week. Seems like I've been so busy at work and when I get home, we hang out on the patio enjoying the last of the nice days that by the time we come in, I'm too tired to read. Gasp!! How does that even happen. I guess I'm in what is called a 'reading slump.' The book I am reading now is for my book club this week and it's just not grabbing me. But I know I have to get it read—I'm finding other things to do besides read.

And.... we did have another weekend full of grandkiddos with some major family time coming up all next weekend. This is such a busy time for us right now. I want my reading life back to normal!

Thanks for stopping by. I hope you all have a good week. Happy reading!
