Spare Change by Bette Lee Crosby

A Woman who is Superstitious to the Core…

A Boy who claims his Parents are Dead…

A Murderer who wants to Silence the Truth of What Happened.

Olivia Westerly knows what she knows — opals mean disaster, eleven is the unluckiest number on earth and children weigh a woman down like a pocketful of stones. That’s why she’s avoided marriage for almost forty years. But when Charlie Doyle happened along, he was simply too wonderful to resist. Now she’s a widow with an eleven-year-old boy claiming to be her grandson.

Spare Change is a quirky mix of Southern flair, serious thoughts about the important things in life, the madcap adventures of a young boy and a late change of heart that makes all the difference in an unusually independent woman.

With a foul mouth, dark secrets and heavily guarded emotions, Ethan Allen Doyle is not an easy child to like. He was counting on the grandpa he’d never met for a place to hide, but now that plan is shot to blazes because the grandpa’s dead too. He’s got seven dollars and twenty-six cents, his mama’s will for staying alive, and Dog. But none of those things are gonna help if Scooter Cobb finds him. ~~ synopsis from Goodreads

My thoughts about Spare Change ~~

I love the main characters of Olivia and Ethan Allen. They are as different as night and day, in some respects, but in other ways, they are meant to be together. Olivia is an independent woman who knows what she wants. No husband. No kids. An independent woman, before her time. And then there's Ethan Allen, (really parents, who does that?) the young boy who has to grow up quickly, when he should still be a kid.

I immediately connected with and admired both Olivia and Ethan Allen. They are both very likable, honest people who had bad things happen to them.

Spare Change is a delightful, homey story, with murder and mayhem thrown in, told with a little southern flavor that put a smile on my face as I was reading. There are some really great lines in the book. I am going to share just a few that I loved.
'The year Ethan Allen became eleven was when things between Benjamin and Susanna turned rancid as a week old pork chop.'
Now if that doesn't create an image (or smell) for ya, I don't know what will.
'The Good Lord don't do things that way - when he sees a person's flat out of hope and feeling dead broke, He slips a bit of spare change into the bottom of their pocket; not a lot maybe, but enough for them to get by.'
I love it when I discover how the author connects the story to the title.
'I'm not really the boy's grandma and I've got no obligation, but I still feel for the child - everybody ought to have someone that loves them.'
Ahhhhh.
'Let's see," Olivia mumbled, thinking out loud, 'there's a Methodist Church on the corner, and a block down there's a Baptist, then over on Grant Street, a Catholic Church ... they're all reasonably close by; which one do you think He's more likely to listen to?' Canasta laughed out loud. 'It don't make a bean of difference,' she finally said, 'the Lord listens in all those places. They're just different slices of the same pie.'
That is an awesome line - 'just different slices of the same pie.'

I love the way Bette writes. This story was very entertaining as well as being easy to read with wonderful, colorful characters. This is the first book of Bette's that I have read. I am definitely going to be reading more!

About the author

Award-winning novelist Bette Lee Crosby brings the wit and wisdom of her Southern Mama to works of fiction—the result is a delightful blend of humor, mystery and romance along with a cast of quirky charters who will steal your heart away.

Crosby’s work was first recognized in 2006 when she received The National League of American Pen Women Award for a then unpublished manuscript. Since then, she has gone on to win several more awards, including another NLAPW award, three Royal Palm Literary Awards, and the FPA President’s Book Award Gold Medal.

Her published novels to date are: Cracks in the Sidewalk (2009), Spare Change (2011), The Twelfth Child (2012), Cupid’s Christmas (2012) and What Matters Most (2013). She has also authored “Life in the Land of IS” a memoir of Lani Deauville, a woman the Guinness Book of Records lists as the world’s longest living quadriplegic.

Crosby originally studied art and began her career as a packaging designer. When asked to write a few lines of copy for the back of a pantyhose package, she discovered a love for words that was irrepressible. After years of writing for business, she turned to works of fiction and never looked back. “Storytelling is in my blood,” Crosby laughingly admits, “My mom was not a writer, but she was a captivating storyteller, so I find myself using bits and pieces of her voice in most everything I write."

Patti Callahan Henry ~ Live Chat at BookTrib

During the chat you can:

  • Ask Patti questions directly
  • WIN a free copy of her latest book, AND THEN I FOUND YOU
  • See Patti's fabulous, creative writing space where all the magic happens

Click here to enter the chat.

Back in the day, a long time ago, I posted my thoughts about one of Patti's books, Coming up for Air. I loved it and when I went back and looked at the post, (take a look here) written in 2011, I was kind of shocked at how much I have grown since then. Back then, I just wanted to have a place to log what books I read and how I felt about them. I never dreamed that The Book Bag would be what it is today! It's really kind of amazing to me!

Anyway, Patti has a new book out And Then I Found You.
And I can't wait to read it!

About the book

Henry returns with her best, most personal and moving story to date. AND THEN I FOUND YOU (St. Martin’s Press; April 9, 2013, Hardcover) is inspired by her family's personal experience with adoption. The novel explores one of the most difficult decisions a mother could face and tells the story of the bravery it takes to find one’s place in the world and a miraculous reunion that changes everyone’s lives forever.

Henry’s sister, Barbi, placed her baby daughter for adoption over twenty years ago. She chose the family carefully and then waited. Twenty years later she heard from her daughter, Catherine. Catherine had stumbled upon her birth certificate and discovered her birth mother's name. After requesting permission from her parents to locate her birth mother, Catherine performed a Google search. Her birth mother’s name didn't pop up, but her novelist sister's did. Catherine couldn't believe the resemblance and immediately sent a Facebook request to Patti and her birth mother. And so their story begins. The anniversary of that Facebook reunion - of their family reunion three years ago - happens to coincide with the publication of the book in April. One could never have planned that.

In AND THEN I FOUND YOU Henry creates the wonderful characters of Kate, Jack, and Emily to capture the emotional truths of the way families connect and what happens when the lost becomes found. The story will resonate with anyone who has ever longed for a second chance, a new beginning and the joyful change that reunions bring to a family. You won’t forget the courage, heartbreak, healing, and redemption made possible in Henry’s capable hands.

Synopsis of the book from Goodreads

Kate Vaughan is no stranger to tough choices.

She’s made them before. Now it’s time to do it again.

Kate has a secret, something tucked away in her past. And she’s getting on with her life.  Her business is thriving. She has a strong relationship with her family, and a devoted boyfriend whom she wants to love with all her heart. If Kate had ever made a list, Rowan would fill the imagined boxes of a perfect mate. But she wants more than the perfect on paper relationship; she wants a real and imperfect love. That's why, when Kate discovers the small velvet box hidden in Rowan's drawer, she panics.

It always happens this way. Just when Kate thinks she can love, just when she believes she can conquer the fear, she’s filled with dread. And she wants more than anything to make this feeling go away. But how?

When the mistakes have been made and the running is over, it’s time to face the truth. Kate knows this. She understands that a woman can never undo what can never be undone. Yet, for the first time in her life she also knows that she won’t fully love until she confronts those from her past. It’s time to act.

Can she do it? Can she travel to the place where it all began, to the one who shares her secret? Can the lost ever become found?

And Then I Found You gives new life to the phrase “inspired by a true story.” By travelling back to a painful time in her own family’s history, the author explores the limits of courage, and the price of a selfless act.

See you in the chat-room!

Book Spotlight and a Giveaway! The Paperbark Shoe by Goldie Goldbloom

The Paperbark Shoe

Winner of the 2008 AWP Award for the Novel.

From 1941 to 1947, eighteen thousand Italian prisoners of war were sent to Australia. The Italian surrender that followed the downfall of Mussolini had created a novel circumstance: prisoners who theoretically were no longer enemies. Many of these exiles were sent to work on isolated farms, unguarded.

The Paperbark Shoe is the unforgettable story of Gin Boyle—an albino, a classically trained pianist, and a woman with a painful past. Disavowed by her wealthy stepfather, her unlikely savior is the farmer Mr. Toad—a little man with a taste for women's corsets. Together with their two children, they weather the hardship of rural life and the mockery of their neighbors.

But with the arrival of two Italian prisoners of war, their lives are turned upside down. Thousands of miles from home, Antonio and John find themselves on Mr. and Mrs. Toad's farm, exiles in the company of exiles. The Paperbark Shoe is a remarkable novel about the far-reaching repercussions of war, the subtle violence of displacement, and what it means to live as a captive—in enemy country, and in one's own skin. ~~ synopsis from Goodreads

On Tour: Tainted Love by Erin Cawood, an Excerpt and a Giveaway!

For anyone in a relationship, the words 'we need to talk' can only mean one thing. In the last twenty-two years, the McKenzies have been through it, survived it, learned by it, and grown stronger from it, because life didn't stop for breath when they needed it. Amongst the tears and the tragedies, the hopes and happiness, they've built something amazing: a happy family, a luxury lifestyle and a booming empire. Don't they deserve to have it all?

But for the perfect wife, those four sinister words mean something entirely different. They're a summons into a private world where what happens behind closed doors stays behind closed doors.

Faith has no doubt in Calvin's undying love for her. It's what kept her sane in the darkest hours. If only she could figure out what it is she does wrong... because it’s rapidly becoming apparent their tainted love is running out of time. ~~ synopsis from Goodreads

Excerpt
"You know…” I tried to keep things light between us. I always tried to keep things light between us, because the alternative was just too hard to bear. “You really shouldn't sneak up on a woman who's holding a paring knife."
A feather light touch hovered at my waist. I thought I’d imagined it, but every nerve went into overdrive. I was hyperaware of just how close he was to me. Then his hand fully slipped around my waist and pulled me against him. My heart skipped. His lips nuzzled into the side of my neck and the rest of me flew skywards. I swear I never thought this day would ever come. And then a dozen roses, white roses, appeared in front of me. "Happy Anniversary, Fay."
“Oh, Cal!” He’d remembered I had white roses on our wedding day!
The knife clattered to the board and I spun in his arms. "She's gone?" Something flickered across his eyes. The warm circle around me began to loosen. "I mean, you've come back to me?" He smiled. There was that look again. The one telling me I was the rarest of diamonds and he was the poorest of men and lucky enough to have stumbled upon me. "Cal, that's the best present you could have ever given me."
"Oh well." He grinned, with a mischievous twinkle in his eye. "In that case I'll take this—” He lifted a small square velvet box up. “—back to the jewelers."
"Oh, no!” I laughed, trying to take it, but with Cal’s height advantage he held it out of my reach. His chest rumbled against mine as I toppled and he laughed. “I'll take that too, but...” I lowered back from the tips of my toes and met his eyes. “You know, it’s been a really long road, Cal, and I ...” I looked away. I doubted his love for me and his commitment to our marriage. I know I had every right to but still, it was really hard to say those words out loud. “I didn't think you were ever coming back."
"Gawd, Faith!" My eyes snapped to his. "Only you could make adorable so goddamn hot!”
It was so unexpected. His lips were on mine and taking the air right from my lungs. And they were telling me that he was mine again. So I didn't care about the other woman anymore. She was a blip. Someone who gave him something he needed when I couldn't. He was mine! All mine! And forever!
“Now you've got five seconds..." he growled, "...to make a run for it, or this food hits the floor. Five..."
Oh my... wouldn't that be nice but what about the — "You did it deliberately?"
"Four...”
"The kids were complaining they didn't have any money." He came in through the front door and they were in the living room... "You got rid of the kids when you walked in the door, didn't you?"
His hands were already getting busy. He wasn't going to get to zero. "Three."
“I’m insulted, um, that...” I wriggled under his touch. You know it’s not easy to be angry in this situation. “...that you were this presumptuous.”
“Screw it. I can’t wait. And for the record, this is so much better than crawling on my knees and begging for forgiveness.” One arm swept the island completely clean of everything as the other lifted me off my feet. I wrapped my arms and legs around him. Our eyes met and his breath caught.
He lowered my hips until I sat on the counter. His lips found mine, so sweet, so soft, so much emotion... he pulled away, dragging his hands down my arms until our fingers entwined. His eyes held mine. "I will, Faith... if you want me to," he whispered. "Because I love you more than anything and I was stupid to do this to you."
I shook my head. No. I didn't need an apology.
He cupped my cheeks in his hands and kissed me. He made me feel like I was flying. I was so far past cloud nine. Hell, I was way past cloud nine hundred and ninety-nine. This was the only thing I’d wanted for months. It was the only thing I’d wanted to hear for months. I had my husband back. I didn't need anything else.

A debt collector can tell you precisely.

Lirium plays the part of the grim reaper well, with his dark trenchcoat, jackboots, and the black marks on his soul that every debt collector carries. Susan Kaye Quinn grew up in California, where she wrote snippets of stories and passed them to her friends during class. Her teachers pretended not to notice and only confiscated her stories a couple times.

Susan left writing behind to pursue a bunch of engineering degrees, but she was drawn back to writing by an irresistible urge to share her stories with her niece, her kids, and all the wonderful friends she’s met along the way.

She doesn’t have to sneak her notes anymore, which is too bad.

Susan writes from the Chicago suburbs with her three boys, two cats, and one husband. Which, it turns out, is exactly as a much as she can handle.

On Tour: Theresa Rizzo, Author of He Belongs to Me Talks About Her Voices and a Giveaway!

Yesterday I posted my thoughts about Theresa Rizzo's wonderful book, He Belongs to Me. This book drew me in from the very first page. You can read my thoughts here.

Today, Theresa is here giving us her thoughts on the question I like to ask authors about the voices they might hear while writing. It's always fun reading the answers.

I have heard other authors say that they 'hear voices in their head' and that is how they write their books: the characters are telling their stories. Not being a writer myself, that concept has always intrigued me.

When some people hear voices, we get them medical attention, others end up becoming writers. Does this happen to you? How do you come up with your stories?

The only time I hear voices is in my sleep while working on a book. Sometimes I’ll dream of my characters talking. I think OMG this is so brilliant that I’ll remember it in the morning — Ye-a-h . . . not so much. I've learned to get up and write down any genius thoughts ‘cause my memory is NOT so brilliant.
My ideas most often come from newspaper articles. Life is stranger than fiction and the situations people get themselves into fascinate me. For example the inspiration for He Belongs to Me came from a newspaper article about a young couple where the boy was accused of shaking his baby to death. When it went to trial, the young man was undisputedly acquitted, but I couldn't help but wonder how this tragic experience had irreparably changed them.
How could they go on and salvage their marriage? How could their love survive? His son died in his hands. How could he not subconsciously feel like he had killed the baby? How could they move on to create a happy family with this horrible legacy? Hence, He Belongs to Me was born.
