Happy Release Day!!

Congrats Deanna
on the release today of
The Ones We Leave Behind!

The Ones We Leave Behind by Deanna Lynn Sletten
Print and e-book, 412 pages
Published September 8, 2020 by Deanna Lynn Sletten

Diane picked up her mother’s phone. “How do you feel about your mother being let out of prison today after sixty-five years?” the reporter asked. Diane stared at her mother. “My grandmother is alive?” That one phone call hurled shock waves throughout the entire family.

1955 – Anna Bergman Craine’s life changes in an instant when she commits a crime of passion and is sentenced to life in prison. Leaving behind two young children, she is left alone in the world, never to hear from family or friends again. Decades later, she is set free, and finds she has a family that has chosen to forget her. What caused this beautiful, intelligent, young woman to commit such a drastic deed that would pull her away from everyone she loved?

2020 – Diane Martin is shocked to learn that not only is her maternal grandmother alive, but she’s just been released after decades in prison. Against her aging mother’s wishes, she visits the older woman and soon hears a tale of the events that led up to that tragic day in 1955. Diane realizes that her own life has mirrored that of her grandmother’s and, had circumstances gone differently that fateful day, she might have experienced the same fate.

A heart-wrenching story of a family torn apart because of a moment in time and trying to put the pieces together after being separated for decades.

My thoughts about The Ones We Leave Behind ~~

(I love to note the first lines of the books I'm reading. First lines can really grab a reader's attention and I love seeing where the author takes the reader after their first line.)

First line—"Diane Martin strode down the hallway of the Rosewood Senior Living Apartments, smiling and waving to the many residents she passed."

Can you even imagine finding out that your grandmother is alive after being told all your life that she was dead? And then to find out that she has spent the last 65 years of her life in prison. Inconceivable! So, of course, Diane has to reach out to her grandmother but in the process of listening to her story, and to her mother's version, she gets conflicting accounts of Anna, the life she lead, and how she ended up in prison.

We are transported to Anna's life in the 1950's as she shares her life back then with her granddaughter. Things were wonderful for Anna once upon a time, until they weren't anymore, until 1955 when the unthinkable happened.

The story alternates to the present, where Diane is trying to understand all of this and to make sense of what her grandmother went through. all while trying to convince her mother to come face-to-face with the women she has hated most of her life.

Once again, Deanna has created a memorable, heartbreaking, beautiful story that will make you feel all the feels—joy, love, fear, anger, betrayal, forgiveness, despair, acceptance—and so much more.

The Ones We Leave Behind is a must-read for lovers of historical fiction and women's fiction. It definitely fits the bill for both of these genres. I loved it, like I knew I would, and I highly recommend it!

I received a copy of The Ones We Leave Behind from the author and this is my honest opinion.

My thoughts about Road Trip ~~

This was the first book by Laura Barnard that I have read or listened to. I've helped promote her books in the past but for some reason this one caught my eye, or ear I should say, and I had to give her a try. Oh my gosh, this was such a fun trip!

I listened to the audio-book on my morning walks and I literally laughed out loud in parts! What did the neighbors think, I wonder?

I spent a lot of time with the quirky characters, Katy and Felix, and their zany escapades as they traveled together to job interviews. Katy can't stand being around Felix, who has a reputation for being a 'player' and Felix likes to get Katy's goat in any way that he can. I loved the back and forth banter the two of them got themselves into.

Road Trip is a hilarious, fun adventure that you really need to take. Enjoy the ride.... and the laughs!

The Liar's Child

The Liar's Child by Carla Buckley
ARC, 288 pages
Published March 12th 2019 by Ballantine Books

In this intense and intimate family portrait that moves at a thriller's pace, a troubled woman faces a gripping moral dilemma after rescuing two abandoned children from a hurricane.

On the outskirts of North Carolina's Outer Banks sits the Paradise, an apartment complex where renters never stay long enough to call the place "home"--and neighbors are seldom neighborly. It's ideal for Sara Lennox, who moved there to escape a complicated past--and even her name--and rebuild a new life for herself under the radar. But Sara cannot help but notice the family next door, especially twelve-year-old Cassie and five-year-old Boon. She hears rumors and whispers of a recent tragedy slowly tearing them apart.

When a raging storm threatens then slams the coastal community, Sara makes a quick, bold decision: Rescue Cassie and Boon from the storm and their broken home--without telling a soul. But this seemingly noble act is not without consequences. Some lethal.

Carla Buckley crafts a richly rewarding psychological portrait, combining a heart-wrenching family drama with high-stakes suspense, as the lives of three characters intertwine in an unforgettable story of fury, fate--and redemption.

Release Day!! No Place Too Far by Kay Bratt ~ My Thoughts #NoPlaceTooFar

49250693. sy475

Congrats Kay
on the release today of
No Place Too Far!

No Place Too Far by Kay Bratt
A By the Sea Novel Book 2
Print and e-book, 311 pages
Published September 1st 2020 by Lake Union Publishing

Maggie Dalton was forced to uproot her entire life to protect herself and her son. Just when she thinks she’s outrun her past, she’ll have to face her fears in this emotional and suspenseful novel by the bestselling author of Wish Me Home.

After a year on the move, single mom Maggie Dalton has found a safe haven with her son in Maui. It’s the perfect spot to settle down now that her relentless stalker is finally behind bars. Maggie finds a new job and a new life thanks to some help from her best friend, Quinn, who urged her to come start over in paradise. But when signals suggest her stalker is back, Maggie realizes Maui might not be the safe oasis she thought.

Quinn knows all about facing the past. Tenuously reunited with her biological family after thirty years, she’s still coming to terms with her childhood—along with guilt, secrets, and mysteries yet to be resolved. And just as she’s starting to figure out where she fits in with her family, a name from the past threatens them all.

With that fear comes a choice for both women: abandon the lives they’ve been building on Maui, or find the courage to finally stop running and fight for the happiness they deserve.

My thoughts about No Place Too Far ~~

(I love to note the first lines of the books I'm reading. First lines can really grab a reader's attention and I love seeing where the author takes the reader after their first line.)

First line—"'Is that a search-and-rescue dog?' the old man asked, his eyes on Woodrow."

I absolutely loved book one in this series, True to Me, and couldn't wait to go back to Quinn's world and the beautiful islands of Hawaii. Well, No Place Too Far, book two is every bit a good as the first one.

The story centers on Quinn's best friend Maggie who moves to Maui to escape the troubles in her past. But when her past comes looking for her, things get dangerous. Watching Maggie figure out what she wants and stand up to the evil from her past make this a story that will grab your heart. Meanwhile, Quinn also has to face her past and either flee or stay and fight for what's important.

The author has created an intriguing story in a beautiful setting that will keep you enthralled all while feeling a little bit like you are on vacation. This is an amazing series with characters that I have come to love and I'm super excited for book number three!

I received a copy of No Place Too Far from the author via NetGalley and this is my honest opinion.
