It's Monday! What Are You Reading? April 30, 2018

It's Monday! What Are You Reading? is a place to meet up and share what you have been, are and about to be reading over the week. It's an opportunity to visit other blogs and to comment on their reads. And ... you can add to that ever growing TBR pile! So welcome everyone. This meme started with J Kaye's Blog and then was taken up by Sheila from Book Journey. Sheila then passed it on to Kathryn at the Book Date. And here we are!

**************************************

Well, I didn't post last Monday because we were on vacation in the Black Hills so this is two weeks worth of reading. I, of course, had unrealistic expectations on the number of books I would get read. Alas, vacation sightseeing got in the way. But we had a great time!

And then after we got back, I had such a busy week with most of my evenings booked and that really cut into my reading time as well. This past weekend we ended up babysitting 4 of our 8 grandkids, with the oldest being 14 (not too hard), the youngest only 15 months old (high maintenance), and the other two right in the middle. Needless to say, there was no reading for me all weekend.

I am so ready to get in some quality reading time and I have quite a few posts to write as well. Someday I'll get caught up, right?

Thanks for stopping by. I hope you all have a good week. Happy reading!

Oh my gosh! We had a blizzard this past weekend. The wind was unbelievable! And the snow just wouldn't stop. Everything in pretty much the whole state (South Dakota) was closed down. We even had a snow plow/sand truck stuck in front of our house. How does that happen?

Both interstates in the state were closed for most of Friday and all day Saturday. And we're supposed to get more snow in the middle of the week through the weekend. I'm not sure if our trip to the Black Hills is going to happen now. So bummed! The snow needs to stop.

Here are a couple of pictures I took on Saturday to capture the craziness of the weekend.

This is our front window with a plant in front of it. The snow was stuck to the window when we got up Saturday morning. I thought this made a very interesting picture.

This is out the back door on Sunday morning. That's the door to the garage. We'll be doing some digging out.

Thanks for stopping by. I hope you all have a good week. Happy reading!

It snowed here all day Sunday! Ugh!! As my 3 year old grandson exclaimed when we looked out the window and saw all the snow, "Now Spring will never come! It's too cold!" He was so sad. Out of the mouth of babes, right? It is kind of pretty but not so much in April when we are 3 weeks into Spring-time already.

Hubby and I are planning a trip to the Black Hills in a few weeks. First we'll stop and visit my mother-in-law in Nebraska for a few days and then head to the Hills. We love it out there and I can't wait! I've already started to think about the books I'm going to take! 📕📖📗📚

The Forgotten Ones

The Forgotten Ones by Steena Holmes
Print and e-book, 348 pages
Published April 1st 2018 by Lake Union Publishing

In this novel from a New York Times bestselling author, the search for truth is defined by secrets and lies.

Elle is a survivor. She’s managed to piece together a solid life from a childhood of broken memories and fairy tales her mom told her to explain away bad dreams. But weekly visits to her mother still fill Elle with a paralyzing fear she can’t explain. It’s just another of so many unanswered questions she grew up with in a family estranged by silence and secrets.

Elle’s world turns upside down when she receives a deathbed request from her grandfather, a man she was told had died years ago. Racked by grief, regrets, and a haunted conscience, he has a tale of his own to tell Elle: about her mother, an imaginary friend, and two strangers who came to the house one night and never left.

As Elle’s past unfolds, so does the truth—if she can believe it. She must face the reasons for her inexplicable dread. As dark as they are, Elle must listen…before her grandfather’s death buries the family’s secrets forever.

Congratulations Steena
 on the release today of
The Forgotten Ones!

I've read or listened to several of Steena's other books and loved them. I'm looking forward to reading The Forgotten Ones

About the author

Steena Holmes

I’m Steena Holmes. A wife, a mother of three daughters, and I live in Calgary, Alberta. I’m an author and a travelholic. I love to read, write, bake and travel – not necessarily in that order either.

Welcome to my world of passions—chocolate and writing! Pull up a chair, fill your plate with sweet delicacies as we learn together how to become stronger writers. We’ll discuss books, indie publishing and passions—not always in that order!

Growing up as a small town Canadian girl, there wasn’t much to do but ride your bike, hang out with friends on the beach and daydream. I always wanted to write but never dreamed it was something I could do as a career. I love to travel and fell in love with the sheep covered hillside, old castles and romantic history of Scotland and England. I dream about waking up in Tuscany and touring small town shops in the south of France with my husband, of placing my toes in the ocean and experiencing history first hand.

As a mother with three daughters, I’m learning that teaching them to pursue their dreams is a lasting legacy. I love to wake up to the Rocky Mountains, will forever enjoy the taste of coffee and chocolate and can’t imagine the day when a story doesn’t unfold in my heart. Living a life with passion and pursuing dreams is a life well lived. ~ Author's website

So far I have read 2 of the 10 books in Girls on Fire. Let me tell you, I have loved them both. I can't wait to work my way through the rest of them. And you can get all 10 right now for only $.99!! What a deal!

Here are my thoughts on the 2 books I have read so far.

The Forgotten Ones
by Laura Howard

Allison O'Malley's plan is to go to grad school so she can get a good job and take care of her schizophrenic mother. She has carefully closed herself off from everything else, including a relationship with Ethan, who she's been in love with for as long as she can remember.

What is definitely not part of the plan is the return of her long-lost father, who claims he can bring Allison's mother back from the dark place her mind has gone. Allison doesn't trust her father, so why would she believe his stories about a long forgotten Irish people, the Tuatha de Danaan? But truths have a way of revealing themselves. Secrets will eventually surface. And Allison must learn to set aside her plan and work with her father if there is even a small chance it could restore her mother's sanity.~~ synopsis from Goodreads

My thoughts about The Forgotten Ones ~~
(originally posted on May 13, 2013)

Love, love, love this cover! Yep, that's what drew me in. And then I read a sample of the first chapter and just knew I had to read more. I have to admit that the taste I got from chapter one did not prepare me for what was to come. The Forgotten Ones took me to a world I was not expecting.

I immediately connected with Allison. She is a young woman, trying to get through school while also trying to deal with her mother's schizophrenia. And then things start to change when the father she never knew shows up. There is so much she doesn't understand.

The reader is swept away right along with Allison to another place to try to find out the truth about her past. Can she get her mother back? This is the part of the story that I was not expecting, to be carried away on this adventure. What a great ride!

And..... I discovered, after the fact, that this is book one of The Danaan Trilogy! How did I miss that? I am so excited to read more of this series to see how this story continues.

Perception
by Lee Strauss

Eternal Life is To Die For.

Seventeen year old Zoe Vanderveen is a GAP—a genetically altered person. She lives in the security of a walled city on prime water-front property along-side other equally beautiful people with extended life spans.

Her brother Liam is missing.

Noah Brody is a natural who lives on the outside. He leads protests against the GAPs and detests the widening chasm they’ve created between those who have and those who don’t. He doesn’t like girls like Zoe and he has good reason not to like her specifically.

Zoe’s carefree life takes a traumatic turn. She’s in trouble and it turns out that Noah, the last guy on earth she should trust, is the only one who can help her.

Perception is a (SF/mystery/romance) Young Adult novel that takes place in the not-too-distant future in a world changed by climate extremes, natural disasters and impending wars, and where scientific breakthroughs cause class divisions—both financially and philosophically. It explores the clash between faith and science and how differences can separate us as enemies or ally us together. And in some cases, even in the midst of betrayal and personal crisis, there’s room to fall in love.

This is the first book in a series.

My thoughts about Perception ~~
(originally posted June 18, 2014)

This series has been on my radar for some time now (I just love the covers) and have been meaning to read them. But you know how that is - so many books, so little time. Well, this series and the author came to my attention again after the Girls on Fire boxed set was released. I figured this was a great time to get this one read.

I know that the dystopian genre is huge right now and I suppose I have read a few. When I started Perception, I felt very comfortable in the world of Zoe, Liam, and Noah. I love how an author's imagination can visualize what the world could possibly be like in the future. And it's amazing to think about how close their imagination might be to the truth.
'I spoke Jackson's name into the dashboard computer. My pod car followed the magnetic grid through the city - down wide boulevards lined with palm trees and artificial energy capturing "trees" that looked more like over-sized kitchen utensils - miraculously skirting pedestrian and a maze of other electro magnetic vehicles.
I immediately loved Zoe and her independence. And I loved how she just never gave up trying to find out what happened to her brother. What an amazing woman she is! And you just have to love Noah, such a nice guy with strong beliefs and values and who is always trying to do the right thing. What a pair they make.
'"Yes, I believe you have a soul." It meant so much to hear him say it. Never in my life had I doubted myself, my reason for being, my right to exist. Now everything was in question.'
I loved Perception and I am looking forward to read all the rest of the series. And I love it when I can just go right into the next book. That's one good reason for waiting to start a series. Volition here I come!

But for all this futurist thinking and imagining, some things never change.
'"I don't know," I said. "You can't trust everything you read on the Internet."'
