About the Author

Deborah Coonts

My mother tells me I was born a very long time ago, but I’m not so sure—my mother can’t be trusted. These things I do know: I was raised in Texas on barbeque, Mexican food and beer. I am the author of Wanna Get Lucky? (A NY Times Notable Crime Novel and double RITA™ Finalist), its five sequels, Lucky Break being the latest, four between-the-books novellas and the first in a new series, Crushed, a novel of wine and love.

Currently I’m stretching my writer muscles working on a women’s fiction/contemporary romance series set in Napa, a dark thriller, a romantic suspense series featuring a female helicopter pilot, as well as the next Lucky adventure—all very different projects. So, if you see me with a glass of Champagne in hand, you’ll understand. I can usually be found at the bar, but also at www.deborahcoonts.com.

Release Day: The Child by Fiona Barton ~ My Thoughts

Happy Release Day!!

The Child

The Child by Fiona Barton
Hardcover and e-book, 384 pages
Published June 27th 2017 by Berkley Books

The author of the stunning New York Times bestseller The Widow returns with a brand-new novel of twisting psychological suspense.

As an old house is demolished in a gentrifying section of London, a workman discovers a tiny skeleton, buried for years. For journalist Kate Waters, it s a story that deserves attention. She cobbles together a piece for her newspaper, but at a loss for answers, she can only pose a question: Who is the Building Site Baby?

As Kate investigates, she unearths connections to a crime that rocked the city decades earlier: A newborn baby was stolen from the maternity ward in a local hospital and was never found. Her heartbroken parents were left devastated by the loss.

But there is more to the story, and Kate is drawn house by house into the pasts of the people who once lived in this neighborhood that has given up its greatest mystery. And she soon finds herself the keeper of unexpected secrets that erupt in the lives of three women and torn between what she can and cannot tell.

My thoughts about The Child ~~

(I love to note the first lines of the books I'm reading. First lines can really grab a reader's attention and I love seeing where the author takes the reader after their first line.)

First line—"My computer is winking at me knowingly when I sit down at my desk. I touch the keyboard, and a photo of Paul appears on my screen."

The Child started out confusing for me, just for the fact that there were several characters introduced rather quickly. This is not a negative about this bookI knew their storylines were connected somehow by I was stumped about how that was going to happen.

This is a story that kept me riveted and turning pages, trying to get to the bottom of the mystery baby found buried at a worksite. So many secrets, by so many people. I loved all the twists.

The Child is the first book of Fiona's that I have read. I will definitely be reading her previous book, The Widow and will be on the lookout for all of her future books. I love her ability to keep me confused and guessing, while giving me a satisfying ending.

I received an ARC of The Child in exchange for my honest opinion.

About the author

Fiona Barton

My career has taken some surprising twists and turns over the years. I have been a journalist - senior writer at the Daily Mail, news editor at the Daily Telegraph, and chief reporter at The Mail on Sunday, where I won Reporter of the Year at the National Press Awards, gave up my job to volunteer in Sri Lanka and since 2008, have trained and worked with exiled and threatened journalists all over the world.

But through it all, a story was cooking in my head.

The worm of my first book infected me long ago when, as a national newspaper journalist covering notorious crimes and trials, I found myself wondering what the wives of those accused really knew - or allowed themselves to know.

It took the liberation of my career change to turn that fascination into a tale of a missing child, narrated by the wife of the man suspected of the crime, the detective leading the hunt, the journalist covering the case and the mother of the victim.

Much to my astonishment and delight, The Widow was published in 36 countries and made the Sunday Times and New York Times Best Seller lists.

It gave me the confidence to write a second book, The Child, in which I return to another story that had intrigued me as a journalist. It begins with the discovery of a newborn's skeleton on a building site. It only makes a paragraph in an evening newspaper but for three women it's impossible to ignore.

The Child will be published in June 2017 and I am embarking on my next novel. My husband and I are still living the good life in south-west France, where I am writing in bed, early in the morning when the only distraction is our cockerel, Titch, crowing.

It's Monday! What Are You Reading? is a place to meet up and share what you have been, are and about to be reading over the week. It's an opportunity to visit other blogs and to comment on their reads. And ... you can add to that ever growing TBR pile! So welcome everyone. Oh my gosh, where did the weekend go? I need another SundayI am not ready to go back to work. We had a full 2 days of kids and grandkids. Among other things we had 4 softball games (the 9 year old's team won the championshipyay!!), a birthday party for the 3 year old, and a sleep over with the 8 year old and the 6 month old. I'm exhausted!

Needless to say, I virtually got no reading time in and very little online time. Hubby is leaving this morning for about 4-5 days and I am looking forward to getting in some quality reading time and I only having to cook if I want to.

Thanks for stopping by. I hope you all have a great week. Happy reading!

One Wrong Turn by Deanna Lynn Sletten ~ My Thoughts and a Giveaway!

One Wrong Turn

One Wrong Turn: A Novel by Deanna Lynn Sletten
Paperback and e-book, 204 pages
Published: June 20th 2017 by Lake Union Publishing

Author Deanna Lynn Sletten returns with an unforgettable novel about one man’s crisis of self and his greatest act of love.

The words “I'm her husband” roll off Clay Connors’s tongue, but with his estranged wife lying in a coma—and no assurance that she’ll awaken—he knows he’s perilously close to losing everything. A singular, terrifying accident has left Jess Connors suspended between life and death. Now Clay is reunited with the family he hasn’t seen for two years, including the daughters he left behind.

Clay should have been there for his family. He never should have stayed away so long. The alcohol that took over his life destroyed everything but a shred of his self-preservation. Sober and haunted, Clay revisits the memory of love, marriage, and how his life unraveled. He hopes that by trying to reconnect with the daughter who blames him and the daughter who barely knew him, he can find a light of hope in this darkest hour. As his family faces its most grueling, emotional test yet, Clay must summon the courage to make right what was wrong—and find forgiveness from his harshest judge: himself.

My thoughts about One Wrong Turn ~~

(I love to note the first lines of the books I'm reading. First lines can really grab a reader's attention and I love seeing where the author takes the reader after their first line.)

First line—"Jessica Conners gripped the steering wheel as she maneuvered the twists and turns on Highway 1 along the Northern California coastline."

I love Deanna's stories and I get lost in them as soon as I start reading the first lines. One Wrong Turn grabbed my heart from the start and I loved my roller-coaster journey through the lives of Jess and Clay and their two wonderful daughters, Maddie, the spunky teenager, and Jilly-bear, the seven-year-old, who is wise beyond her years.

This story was such an emotional read that tugged at my heartstrings. It broke my heart watching this family struggle as they tried to deal with the reality of their beloved wife and mother lying in a coma in the hospital. They all need Jessica so much and if the power of love can heal, they should be able heal their broken family. But can they find it in their hearts to forgive? And is their love going to be strong enough to pull Jess back and fix what is broken?

One Wrong Turn is an amazing love story; a story of strength, perseverance, and forgiveness that will stay with you long after the last page is turned.

Congrats Deanna on the release today of
One Wrong Turn

I have been a huge fan of Deanna's since the very first book of her's that I read. I met her virtually on a blog tour when I read Memories in 2012. I have read everything she has written since then and she is one of my 'drop everything and read' authors. As soon as I get one of her books in my hands—look out—nothing else will get done until I finish it!

After years of being a virtual friend of Deanna's, I finally was able to meet her in person two years ago. We met for lunch and the time just flew, I felt like I had known her forever!

Deanna and me ~ September 2015

I am so excited for One Wrong Turn to get out into the world. Not only is the cover stunning, the beautiful story inside is one you won't soon forget.

The Good Widow

The Good Widow by Liz Fenton and Lisa Steinke
Print and e-book, 302 pages
Published June 1st 2017 by Lake Union Publishing

Bestselling authors Liz Fenton and Lisa Steinke make their suspense debut in this twisty, emotional thriller.

Elementary school teacher Jacqueline “Jacks” Morales’s marriage was far from perfect, but even in its ups and downs it was predictable, familiar. Or at least she thought it was…until two police officers showed up at her door with devastating news. Her husband of eight years, the one who should have been on a business trip to Kansas, had suffered a fatal car accident in Hawaii. And he wasn’t alone.

For Jacks, laying her husband to rest was hard. But it was even harder to think that his final moments belonged to another woman—one who had left behind her own grieving and bewildered fiancé. Nick, just as blindsided by the affair, wants answers. So he suggests that he and Jacks search for the truth together, retracing the doomed lovers’ last days in paradise.

Now, following the twisting path of that fateful road, Jacks is learning that nothing is ever as it seems. Not her marriage. Not her husband. And most certainly not his death…

My thoughts about The Good Widow ~~

(I love to note the first lines of the books I'm reading. First lines can really grab a reader's attention and I love seeing where the author takes the reader after their first lines.)

First line—"His fingers slithered like a snake to find hers. She opened her palm and accepted them. There was something about the commanding way her reached for her. It felt like a statement. You are mine."

Liz Fenton and Lisa Steinke have created an intense, romantic, suspenseful, page turning thriller. How can it be all those things at once? Believe me, The Good Widow, is all that and more. I've read other books by this dynamic duo so I was expecting something similar. Boy, was I wrong! I loved it and I'm excited for this new dimension of their storytelling.

Jacks finds herself on such a rollercoaster ride, as first she learns that her husband is dead and then as she finds out more about his accident, their marriage, and who to trust, or not trust.

I can't even imagine what it takes to write a novel, let alone to write it with another person. And to be able to make it read so seamlessly that the reader doesn't have a clue where one writer starts and another one ends is amazing.

I also have to throw this in. In the book, they mentioned Nebraska Cornhuskers, Omaha, and Sioux Falls—all of which are near and dear to my heart. Loved that!

"Some things are better left alone." This line really jumped out at me and could maybe be tagged as the moral of the story.

Great job with The Good Widow, Liz and Lisa! I hope you have more stories like this one in your imaginations.

About the author

Ian St. James

Ian St James, according to the press, was a millionaire at the age of thirty, when the merchant bank backing his enterprises collapsed and took his business with it. In the years afterwards he started a management consultancy and later turned it into a small investment house. In 1977 he retired to write full time and published eight best-selling novels; The Money Stones, The Balfour Conspiracy, Winner Harris, The Killing Anniversary, Final Resort, Justice, Vengeance and Cold New Dawn.

He also started the wildly successful Ian St James awards launching the careers of several published authors.

2012 sees the return of Ian St James as he brings his novels to the Kindle, introducing a new audience to his explosive mix of passion and adventure.
