Audrey's Guide to Witchcraft by Jody Gehrman and a Giveaway!

Falling in Love, baking a magical cake, fighting an evil necromancer—it’s all in a day’s work for Audrey Oliver, seventeen-year-old witch-in-training.

When her mother goes missing and her twenty-one-year-old witchy cousin shows up out of the blue, Audrey knows something’s gone horribly, dangerously wrong. Now it’s up to her to get her own magical powers up to speed before everyone she loves is destroyed by the sorcerer intricately connected to her mother’s secret past. ~~ synopsis from Goodreads

My thoughts on Audrey's Guide to Witchcraft ~~

Let me start off by saying how awesome this cover is! The fiery red is just amazing. And the inside of the book is pretty awesome also.

I really enjoyed reading Audrey's Guide to Witchcraft. I think of all the 'paranormal' types of stories out there, witches have got to be my favorite to read about. I loved how I, as a reader, got to learn about 'witching' right along with Audrey.

Audrey doesn't know there is anything special about herself until her mom goes missing and a cousin, Sadie, comes to live with her and her sister, Meg. Little by little she discovers her witchy powers, even though at first, those powers are somewhat out of control. Some of the predicaments she finds herself in are rather hilarious. And I loved Sadie, the cousin. She is there just trying to help, but she is kind of a bumbling witch and casts some spells that don't go very well. She has a good heart though.

Audrey really wants to learn all there is to know about being a witch quickly so that she can go help her mother fight off evil. Her mother has been gone a long time. She is a very powerful witch and the Clan needs her awesome ability to bring the evil Cormack under control. Audrey just wants to help end this battle so her mom can come home.

On the other hand, Audrey is also trying to be a normal teenager, who has to deal with boys, best friends and finding the perfect outfit to wear for those special occasions. And I loved that non-witches, those without magic in their blood, like Meg, are called Mundanes, what a perfect word to describe us. Audrey has to keep her witchy knowledge from her sister. Meg is not allowed to find out anything about the witch world.

I love this exchange between Sadie and Audrey. They are together doing some training for Audrey and it's Halloween. Sadie is feeling a little sad. 'It's kind of like being away from home on Christmas. It's a big deal back on the land. We call it Samhain. It's our new year.' Sadie goes on to explain 'The veil between the living and the dead grows thin, so it's the best time to communicate with ancestors. The old falls away, and the new prepares to sprout, but it's this moment in between that's most enchanted. We have bonfires, feasting, dancing, rituals. It's our high holiday.' I don't know why, but that just sounds so nice.

This story is book one is the Audrey series.
I can hardly wait to see what comes next
for Audrey and the rest of her family.

Happy Halloween!
