My thoughts about In the Swim of Things ~~
(I love to note the first lines of the books I'm reading. First lines can really grab a reader's attention and I love seeing where the author takes the reader after their first line.)
First line—"Diving down to the ocean floor, I deftly maneuver around a school of silvery smelt and a pair of comb jellies (unlike regular jellyfish, these gelatinous creatures don't sting and when the light hits their comb rows just right, there's a beautiful rainbow effect that always delights me)."
This story was so much fun!! I was immediately swept away with the idea of mermaids. Who doesn't love mermaids?
Kyra is awesome and I admired her devotion to her family, her love of her job as a mermaid, and her passion for Sea Star Beach where she grew up. When that beach is threatened, watch out! There is no holding her back.
I absolutely loved In the Swim of Things! It's a fanciful tale (cue the mermaids), as well as being a romantic, sexy, lighthearted, sometimes serious story, full of kind and compassionate characters who go up against some very unkind and uncompassionate people. Goodness will prevail! And the ending? Just perfect!!
In the Swim of Things is definitely a book you need to add to your summer reading list—it's the perfect beach read. Who knows, maybe you'll run into a mermaid. Wouldn't that be awesome?
About the author
An avid reader and writer, Tracie Banister has been scribbling stories since she was a child, most of them featuring feisty heroines with complicated love lives like her favorite fictional protagonist Scarlett O'Hara. Her work was first seen on the stage of her elementary school, where her 4th grade class performed an original holiday play she penned. (Like all good divas-in-the-making, she also starred in and tried to direct the production.)
Tracie’s dreams of authorial success were put on the backburner when she reached adulthood and discovered that she needed a "real" job in order to pay her bills. Her career as personal assistant to a local entrepreneur lasted for 12 years. When it ended, she decided to follow her bliss and dedicate herself to writing full-time. She is the proud winner of the 2017 Independent Press Award (Romantic Comedy) and a Bronze Medal in the 2017 Readers’ Favorite Awards (Chick Lit).
