A two-hundred-year-old curse. A tangled thread of mental illness. A growing list of Ross family women dying young. The house where it all began, Desolate Ridge, holds all the secrets.

Abandoned at a hospital when she was only three years old, Aubrey Ross grew up as a ward of the state, passed from one foster family to the next. Having endured years of abuse and neglect, she’s become hardened to the world around her.

She’s flirted with depression and anxiety, and she’s haunted by premonitions. When a strange man approaches Aubrey with information about her past, she knows her life is about to change. Inside the envelope is the deed to a house in Ohio—her ancestral home.

When Aubrey arrives in Rossdale, the town named after her family, she immediately experiences situations she cannot explain. She hears voices, sees apparitions, and has vivid visions of tragedies she can scarcely comprehend. Aubrey comes to realize she is reliving events which have happened to those who came before her.

Then she meets Hank Metzger, the town’s sheriff, whose family has an eerie connection to her own. As the secrets of Desolate Ridge are unearthed, Aubrey begins to understand her destiny is tied to Hank’s in a way she cannot escape.

My thoughts about Résistance ~~

(I love to note the first lines of the books I'm reading. First lines can really grab a reader's attention and I love seeing where the author takes the reader after their first lines.)

First line—"The backstage stinks of sweat and misplaced hope."

I love this whole series and Résistance is a wonderful story showcasing the beauty, talent. and strength of Kamali LeClair. She is an amazing dancer and uses her gift to further her cause.

Résistance dropped me right back into the Singularity world, where the concept of that world is so foreign to me, but one that Susan Kaye Quinn has made very real. It is so easy to become engrossed in her creative story-lines.

The Singularity series and the Stories of Singularity are amazing stories that I highly recommend. You really should read them!

I received a copy of Résistance from the author and this is my honest review.

Fatal Traditions

Fatal Traditions: A Short Story from the Deadwood Humorous Mystery Series by Ann Charles
Deadwood Shorts Book 5
Paperback and e-book, 128 pages
Published October 1st 2019 by Ann Charles

There's a real trick to catching a soul-stealing Hungarian devil made of shadow and smoke.

Unfortunately, Violet Parker doesn't know what that trick is and her aunt's life depends on her figuring it out. But killing is an old family tradition for her ... or rather a fatal tradition.

My thoughts about Fatal Traditions ~~

(I love to note the first lines of the books I'm reading. First lines can really grab a reader's attention and I love seeing where the author takes the reader after their first line.)

First line—"As badass killers went, most days I couldn't drive a nail into a coffin with a sledgehammer."

I absolutely love this series! The characters that Ann Charles has created and woven into this hilarious mystery series are unique, memorable, quirky, and lovable. I am truly amazed at the story-lines this author comes up with as she pits her characters against the evils of another world—and sometimes against each other. I love all of the characters in this series and enjoy dropping back into Deadwood to visit them again. Life is never dull in Violet's world, that's for sure.

I particularly love these shorts that Ann comes out with periodically. First of all, they feed my craving for more until she releases the next book in the series, but I also enjoy how we get a taste of some of the side stories that live outside the normal series. They are great bridges in Violet's world while also satisfying my Deadwood addiction.

About the author

Ann Charles

Ann lives in the beautiful Northern Arizona mountains with her clever husband, charming kids, and an incredibly sassy cat. After many years and several colleges, she managed to obtain her Bachelor’s Degree in English with an emphasis on creative writing from the University of Washington.

Her books are mixed-genre mysteries full of mayhem and fun, romance and comedy, and whatever else feels right. Sisters in Crime was kind enough to let her join their membership years ago. In addition, she’s been a member of Romance Writers of America for so many moons that she’s lost count.

Ann has written a bunch of contemporary, award-winning novels in multiple series full of quirky characters with whom she loves to spend time as much as reality allows. Right now, while you’re reading this, she’s probably frolicking around in another story.

While her reading preferences range from adventure to horror to mystery, ever since she tried on her first training bra, she has loved a good mix of romance, too.

When she’s not dabbling in fiction, she’s penning writing-themed articles or standing on her workshop soapbox, sharing what she has learned over the years about the writing craft and self-promotion.

Congratulations Deanna
on the re-release today of
One Wrong Turn!

One Wrong Turn by Deanna Lynn Sletten
Print and e-book, 173 pages
Published October 22, 2019 by Deanna Lynn Sletten

Tragedy brought him home, but love made him stay.

When his estranged wife, Jess, has a terrible accident leaving her lying in a coma, Clay Connors returns to his family to care for his two daughters. He has been separated from his family for nearly two years and his eldest daughter, Maddie, is resentful over his being absent. Sadly, his youngest daughter, Jilly, barely remembers him. Clay’s reasons for staying away now seem self-serving in the light of their family’s tragedy. The past washes over Clay as the memories of what led up to their separation envelope him and his future hangs in the balance over whether or not his wife will wake up. Can they be a family again, or is he too late?

One Wrong Turn is a story of time lost and redemption as Clay and his daughters struggle to reconnect and learn to trust again in the wake of a tragedy.

(This is a re-release of the book by the same title: One Wrong Turn)

Release Day! Before and After by Judy Christie & Lisa Wingate #BeforeAndAfter

Happy Release Day!

44908411

Congrats Judy and Lisa
on the release today of
Before and After!

Before and After: The Incredible Real-Life Stories of Orphans Who Survived the Tennessee Children's Home Society by Judy Christie and Lisa Wingate
Print and e-book, 320 pages
Published October 22nd 2019 by Ballantine Books

The compelling, poignant true stories of victims of a notorious adoption scandal--some of whom learned the truth from Lisa Wingate's bestselling novel Before We Were Yours and were reunited with birth family members as a result of its wide reach.

From the 1920s to 1950, Georgia Tann ran a black-market baby business at the Tennessee Children's Home Society in Memphis. She offered up more than 5,000 orphans tailored to the wish lists of eager parents--hiding the fact that many weren't orphans at all, but stolen sons and daughters of poor families, desperate single mothers, and women told in maternity wards that their babies had died.

The publication of Lisa Wingate's novel Before We Were Yours brought new awareness of Tann's lucrative career in child trafficking. Adoptees who knew little about their pasts gained insight into the startling facts behind their family histories. Encouraged by their contact with Wingate and award-winning journalist Judy Christie, who documented the stories of fifteen adoptees in this book, many determined Tann survivors set out to trace their roots and find their birth families.

Before and After includes moving and sometimes shocking accounts of the ways in which adoptees were separated from their first families. Often raised as only children, many have joyfully reunited with siblings in the final decades of their lives. Christie and Wingate tell of first meetings that are all the sweeter and more intense for time missed and of families from very different social backgrounds reaching out to embrace better-late-than-never brothers, sisters, and cousins. In a poignant culmination of art meeting life, many of the long-silent victims of the tragically corrupt system return to Memphis with the authors to reclaim their stories at a Tennessee Children's Home Society reunion . . . with extraordinary results.

I read Lisa' book, Before We Were Yours and loved it! Before and After touches on some of the real-life stories of the children who were affected by living at the Tennessee Children's Home Society. I started reading Before and After yesterday and I've read half of it already. I love it—the stories of the children are heartbreaking but so touching.

Two Truths and a Lie by H.A. Price ~ My Thoughts #TwoTruthsAndALie

Two Truths and a Lie: A novel

Two Truths and a Lie

Two Truths and a Lie by H.A. Price
Kindle Edition, 155 pages
Published September 6th 2019

Why do we cheat?

What are the countless ways in which we cheat others, even those we love?

Beth is a woman who (unbeknownst to her family and friends) has given up a free ride to Yale, rejecting her peers and instead marrying Mark, an unpretentious computer technician. Beth wanted salt-of-the-earth. She feared ending up erudite and alone, like Emily Dickinson. Yet she finds herself more isolated than ever as Mark’s wife.

Brad is a man who has married Kara, a promiscuous woman who is upfront about her past. They have a daughter, Katlin. Brad thinks he has outsmarted the competition who wrote Kara off as a common floozy. Eventually he realizes that he has been grading her on a curve--giving her bonus points just to make himself feel superior and wise.

Beth and Brad meet at a party, and their affinity is immediate. A few days later, Brad calls her, and their affair soon begins. As it progresses, they begin to take more risks to see each other.

It soon becomes clear that the events Beth and Brad have set in motion have much more serious ramifications than they could have ever realized.

My thoughts about Two Truths and a Lie ~~

(I love to note the first lines of the books I'm reading. First lines can really grab a reader's attention and I love seeing where the author takes the reader after their first lines.)

First line—"If Beth had known that such small things, a bathing suit or a pair of glasses, could change a life, she might have done things differently."

Two Truths and a Lie is an interesting look at the lives of two people who find themselves attracted to each other, and who eventually act on their attraction. As the affair progresses, it no longer becomes just a lark between two people, it affects all of those around them.

There's a nice variety of characters in this story, some who will touch your heart and then others you just want to throttle. As the story comes to an end, the reader can't help but understand the true cost of an innocent flirtation that turns into so much more.

Two Truths and a Lie is a great story about relationships, with believable characters, about a topic that is very real in our society. I look forward to reading more of this author's stories.

Thank you to H.A. Price for a copy of Two Truths and a Lie. This is my honest review.

Mistletoe Mishap!

Mistletoe Mishap by Tracy Krimmer
Print and e-book, 200 pages
Published October 21st 2019 by Amazon Digital Services

What was meant to be a fling turns into a love they both thought they'd never have or deserved….

Alexis Paige did not make a habit of drunkenly booking travel for herself on the internet. But after the worst breakup ever, she's going wherever the wind, and her widowed dad, urges her to go. Now Alexis is on a plane to Colorado and Mistletoe Manor. The guy seated next to her is easy on the eyes, and oddly charming, but he's also obnoxious. She's relieved she never has to see Grayson Wells again. She's had enough of indecipherable men.

Until she walks into Mistletoe Manor. Grayson's aunt runs the rustic bed and breakfast, and it's his annual holiday spot. He knows the town well and wants to show Alexis all it has to offer. She's leery, especially of a guy like Grayson who's a little too smooth, but she can't find a reason to say no. One kiss under the famed mistletoe and it's almost too easy to say yes. She tells herself that Grayson is a fling, but it hurts to say goodbye only a few short weeks later. Darn that mistletoe…

Back at home, Alexis finds everything shifting—career, her childhood home on the market, and oh yeah, her dad's marital status. She's thrilled her father has found love, but it's too much at once, especially when she's still missing her mom and feeling like her romantic life is doomed. When her dad announces the nuptials will take place at Mistletoe Manor, she fears the trip will just make her sad over what might have been. But when Grayson turns up and puts it all on the line, will Alexis give in to love or will she regret that mistletoe kiss?
